Claims
- 1. An electrooptic light modulator device with a polymeric nonlinear optical component comprising a transparent solid medium of a polymer which is characterized by a recurring structural unit corresponding to the formula: ##STR46## where R is a divalent organic radical containing between about 2-20 carbon atoms; R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group; m is an integer of at least 3; and X is a pendant quinoid substituent selected from ##STR47##
- 2. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polymer has an average molecular weight in the range between about 1000-1,000,000.
- 3. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains a polymethylene structure.
- 4. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains an ester structure.
- 5. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains a urethane structure.
- 6. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains a carbonyl structure.
- 7. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains an imide structure.
- 8. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains an amide structure.
- 9. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the divalent organic radical R in the formula contains an organosiloxyl structure.
