Claims
- 1. In the polymerization of a monomer mass containing a monomer selected from ethylene, styrene, methylmethacrylate and vinyl chloride by subjecting said mass to polymerization conditions in the presence of an initiating amount of an organic peoxide, the improvement in which said organic peroxide includes a peroxydicarbonate of the formula: ##STR4## wherein: each of R and R.sub.1 is lower alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- n is 0 to 3; and
- X is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen, and lower alkoxy of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 2. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein vinyl chloride monomer is polymerized.
- 3. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polymerization conditions include a temperature of from about 50.degree.-60.degree. C.
- 4. In a process for curing a mixture of an unsaturated polyester resin of a polybasic or polyhydric compound or its anhydride and a peroxide cross-linkable monomeric compound by heating said mixture at a curing temperature in the presence of an effective amount of a curing catalyst, the improvement in which the curing catalyst is a peroxydicarbonate of the formula: ##STR5## Wherein: Each of R and R.sub.1 is lower alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; N is O to 3; and X is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen, and lower alkoxy of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 5. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein R and R.sub.1 are each methyl or ethyl; n is 0 or 1 and X is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, halogen, methoxy and ethoxy.
- 6. The improved method in accordance with claim 5 wherein X is methyl and n is 1.
- 7. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein n is 0.
- 8. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein R is methyl.
- 9. The improved method in accordance with claim 8 wherein R.sub.1 is methyl.
- 10. The improved method in accordance with claim 8 wherein R.sub.1 is ethyl.
- 11. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxydicarbonate is di(2-methyl-2-phenyl propyl) peroxydicarbonate.
- 12. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxydicarbonate is di(2-methyl-2-phenyl butyl) peroxydicarbonate.
