Abstract
A diamond grinding wheel includes a base frame stamped from a sheet of steel, a plastic grinding wheel body injection-molded on the base frame and filled up through holes of the base frame, keeping the base frame from sight, and a grinding face formed of layer of diamond power bonded to the periphery of the plastic grinding wheel body.
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a diamond grinding wheel and, more particularly, to such a diamond grinding wheel, which is not heavy, and produces less noise during grinding.
[0002] FIGS. 1(a) and 1(B) show a diamond grinding wheel constructed according to the prior art. This structure of diamond grinding wheel comprises a grinding wheel body 10, and a grinding face 101 provided around the periphery of the grinding wheel body 10. The grinding wheel body 10 is a solid metal member made of iron, copper, or aluminum. Because the specific gravity of the solid metal grinding wheel body 10 is high (iron 7.8; copper 8.2; aluminum 2.8), the diamond grinding wheel is heavy. Further, during grinding, this structure of diamond grinding wheel produces a high noise level, which is harmful to the operator's ears. There are known diamond grinding wheels made of thermoplastic material for the advantage of lightweight. However, these plastic-based diamond grinding wheels are not durable in use.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention has been accomplished under the circumstances in view. It is the main object of the present invention to provide a diamond grinding wheel, which is inexpensive to manufacture. It is another object of the present invention to provide a diamond grinding wheel, which produces less noise when grinding. It is still another object of the present invention to provide a diamond grinding wheel, which is not heavy. According to the present invention, the diamond grinding wheel comprises a plastic grinding wheel body, a base frame embedded in the plastic grinding wheel body to reinforce the structural strength of the plastic grinding wheel body, and a grinding surface formed of layer of diamond power bonded to the periphery of the plastic grinding wheel body.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0008] Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, a diamond grinding wheel in accordance with the present invention is shown comprising a base frame 20. The base frame 20 is made of a steel sheet by stamping. The shape and size of the base frame 20 may be various embodied subject to the designed shape and size of the diamond grinding wheel to be made (see FIG. 3). As illustrated in FIG. 2, the base frame 20 has binding holes 20a of different diameters distributed in different directions. A plastic grinding wheel body 30 is injection-molded on the base frame 20 by means of an injection-molding machine. After injection molding, the base frame 20 is embedded in the plastic grinding wheel body 30, and a part of the plastic grinding wheel body 30 filled up the through holes 20a. At final, diamond powder 40 is bonded to the periphery of the plastic grinding wheel body 30 over the selected area. Because the specific gravity of the plastic material of the plastic grinding wheel body 30 is below 1.8, the finished diamond grinding wheel is not heavy and produces less noise during grinding. Further, because the plastic grinding wheel body 30 is reinforced with the embedded steel base frame 20, the finished diamond grinding wheel has a strong structural strength.
[0009] A prototype of diamond grinding wheel has been constructed with the features of FIGS. 2 and 3. The diamond grinding wheel functions smoothly to provide all of the features discussed earlier.
[0010] Although particular embodiments of the invention have been described in detail for purposes of illustration, various modifications and enhancements may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not to be limited except as by the appended claims.
Claims
- 1. A diamond grinding wheel comprising a plastic grinding wheel body and a grinding face formed of layer of diamond power bonded to the periphery of said plastic grinding wheel body, said plastic grinding wheel body comprising a base metal frame embedded therein, said base metal frame having a plurality of through holes filled up with a part of said plastic grinding wheel body.
