Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a porous hydrophilic diaphragm having a base of fluorinated polymers for electrolysis, said diaphragm characterized by the fact that it is microporous and covered on at least a part of the inner surface of its pores with a copolymer of mono-unsaturated carboxylic acid and non-ionic unsaturated monomer, the porosity being from about 50 to about 95 percent, the equivalent average diameter of the pores being from about 0.1 to about 12 micrometers, and 0.1 to 6 percent of the pore volume being occupied by dry polymer; said method characterized by forming a microporous sheet having a base of fluorinated polymers, impregnating said sheet with a liquid mixture comprising at least one mono-unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, a non-ionic monomer, and a polymerization initiator, and causing the copolymerization.
- 2. A method of preparing the porous diaphragm according to claim 1, characterized by the use of a mixture comprising at least one acid selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, at least one non-ionic comonomer selected from the group consisting of styrene and divinylbenzene, and a diluent.
- 3. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 2, characterized by the fact that the diluent used is ethanol.
- 4. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the proportion by weight of unsaturated carboxylic acid in the mixture of comonomers is between about 40 and 98 percent and that about 30 to 1600 parts of diluent are used for 100 parts by weight of comonomers.
- 5. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 2, characterized by the fact that the proportion by weight of unsaturated carboxylic acid in the mixture of comonomers is between about 40 and 98 percent, that about 30 to 1600 parts of diluent are used for 100 parts by weight of comonomers, and that divinylbenzene is used, the ratio by weight between the divinylbenzene and the carboxylic acid being such that 2.5 to 25 parts of divinylbenzene are used for 100 parts of unsaturated carboxylic acid.
- 6. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 3, characterized by the fact that the proportion by weight of unsaturated carboxylic acid in the mixture of comonomers is between about 40 and 98 percent and that about 30 to 1600 parts of diluent are used for 100 parts by weight of comonomers.
- 7. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that impregnation of the microporous sheet is effected by filtering the liquid mixture containing the comonomers under a slight vacuum through the said sheet.
- 8. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 2, characterized by the fact that impregnation of the microporous sheet is effected by filtering the liquid mixture containing the comonomers under a slight vacuum through the said sheet.
- 9. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 3, characterized by the fact that impregnation of the microporous sheet is effected by filtering the liquid mixture containing the comonomers under a slight vacuum through the said sheet.
- 10. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 4, characterized by the fact that impregnation of the microporous sheet is effected by filtering the liquid mixture containing the comonomers under a slight vacuum through the said sheet.
- 11. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 5, characterized by the fact that impregnation of the microporous sheet is effected by filtering the liquid mixture containing the comonomers under a slight vacuum through the said sheet.
- 12. A method of preparing a microporous diaphragm according to claim 6, characterized by the fact that impregnation of the microporous sheet is effected by filtering the liquid mixture containing the comonomers under a slight vacuum through the said sheet.
