- 2. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 1 wherein each said recessed relief area comprises about the central one-third of each said crimping surface.
- 3. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 1 wherein each said crimping surface extends toward each said first and second side from said recessed relief area first diagonally outwardly and toward the other said crimping surface for a substantial distance and then relatively directly outwardly to each said first and second side of said crimping surface substantially transverse to the direction of die movement, thus forming diagonal surfaces and transverse shoulders.
- 4. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 3 wherein each said diagonal surface comprises about from one-third to six-tenths of its respective side of each said crimping surface and is disposed at an angle of from about 30.degree. to about 60.degree. from the direction in which compressive force is applied to said electrical connection.
- 5. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 3 wherein each said diagonal surface comprises about from 40% to 55% of its respective side of each said crimping surface and is disposed at an angle of from about 40.degree. to about 50.degree. from the direction in which compressive force is applied to said electrical connection.
- 6. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 3 wherein each said shoulder comprises about from 20% to about 40% of its respective side of each said crimping surface and is disposed at an angle of from about 70.degree. to about 95.degree. to the direction in which compressive force is applied to said electrical connection by its respective crimping die.
- 7. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 3 wherein each said shoulder comprises about one-third of its respective side of each said crimping surface and is disposed at an angle of from about 80.degree. to about 92.degree. to the direction in which compressive force is applied to said electrical connector by its respective crimping die.
- 8. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 3 wherein at least each corner between each said diagonal surface and its adjacent said shoulder, is rounded.
- 9. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 1 wherein said small angle is about 5.degree..
- 10. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 1 wherein the corner between each side of said crimping surface and its adjacent said confining wall is rounded.
- 11. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 1 wherein each side of each said crimping surface is substantially symmetrical about the center of each said crimping surface and said crimping surfaces are substantially the converse of each other.
- 12. Dies for crimping an electrical connection of a contact terminal to an electrical conductor comprising:
- two associated and opposing dies each having a crimping surface and being movable relative to each other along an axis to apply compressive force to said electrical connection, said dies defining a crimping region therebetween having a width between first and second sides corresponding generally to the width of the electrical connection to be disposed therewithin to be crimped;
- each said crimping surface in cross-section extends between said first and second sides and includes a portion centrally therebetween, and has a recessed relief area comprising about a central one-third portion thereof whereby substantially no compressive force is applied by said central portion of said crimping surface to said electrical connection;
- a diagonal surface extends from each side of each said recessed relief area on each said crimping surface outwardly at an angle of from about 40.degree. to about 50.degree. from the direction of die movement, and said diagonal surface comprises about from 40% to 55% of its respective side of said crimping surface;
- a shoulder extends from each said diagonal surface outwardly at an angle of from about 80.degree. to about 92.degree. from the direction of die movement, and said shoulder comprises about the outer one-third of its respective side of said crimping surface;
- a rounded corner is between each diagonal surface and its adjacent shoulder;
- both sides of each said crimping surface are substantially symmetrical about the center of said crimping surface; and
- the crimping surface of either one of said crimping dies is substantially the converse of the crimping surface of the other of said crimping dies.
- 13. Crimping dies as set forth in claim 12 wherein one of said crimping dies is a punch die having confining walls adjacent each side of its associated said crimping surface which confine said electrical connection during crimping thereof, which confining walls diverge extending toward the other said crimping die and are at small angles of about 5% outwardly from the direction of die movement to facilitate removal of said electrical connection from said punch die after crimping thereof, and the other of said crimping dies is an anvil die which is dimensioned to just fit between said confining walls during said crimping of said electrical connection.
