Claims
- 1. A method for treatment of a condition selected from the group consisting of abnormal glucose metabolism, insulin resistance, diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperlipidemia, and combinations thereof in an animal comprising administering to the animal a diet formulation comprising moderate amounts of carbohydrate and fat in combination with higher amounts of protein.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the animal is a companion animal.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the animal is a canine.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the animal is a feline.
- 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the diet formulation comprises at least about 40% protein, on a dry matter weight basis.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the diet formulation comprises at least about 40% protein, equal to or less than about 32% carbohydrate, equal to or less than about 17% fat, all on a dry matter weight basis.
- 7. The method of claim 2 wherein the diet formulation comprises at least about 40% protein, equal to or less than about 35% carbohydrate, and equal to or less than about 32% fat, all on a percent of calories basis.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the animal is selected from the group consisting of canines, felines, and combinations thereof.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the diet formulation comprises from about 40% to about 54% protein, from about 14% to about 35% carbohydrate, and from about 22% to about 32% fat, all on a percent of calories basis.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the diet formulation comprises from about 44% to about 48% protein, from about 25% to about 29% carbohydrate, and from about 25% to about 29% fat, all on a percent of calories basis.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the condition is selected from the group consisting of diabetes, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, and combinations thereof.
- 12. A method for increasing longevity of an animal comprising administering to the animal a diet formulation comprising moderate amounts of carbohydrate and fat in combination with higher amounts of protein.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the animal is a companion animal.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein the animal is a canine.
- 15. The method of claim 12 wherein the animal is a feline.
- 16. The method of claim 13 wherein the diet formulation comprises at least about 40% protein, on a dry matter weight basis.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the diet formulation comprises at least about 40% protein, equal to or less than about 32% carbohydrate, equal to or less than about 17% fat, all on a dry matter weight basis.
- 18. The method of claim 13 wherein the diet formulation comprises at least about 40% protein, equal to or less than about 35% carbohydrate, and equal to or less than about 32%, all on a percent of calories basis.
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein the animal is selected from the group consisting of canines, felines, and combinations thereof.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein the diet formulation comprises from about 40% to about 54% protein, from about-14% to about 35% carbohydrate, and from about 22% to about 32% fat, all on a percent of calories basis.
- 21. The method of claim 20 wherein the diet formulation comprises from about 44% to about 48% protein, from about 25% to about 29% carbohydrate, and from about 25% to about 29% fat, all on a percent of calories basis.
