DIFFERENT ABILITIES DOLL

Abstract

The present invention is a different abilities doll that has a disability such as a hearing or vision impairment requiring corrective devices. The doll may have a birthmark or scarring. The doll could have an injury requiring the use of a cast or splint. The doll may have a disability requiring the use of a port. The present invention provides dolls with various disabilities that children with those disabilities can relate to and feel represented.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

There are many dolls on the market for children to play with, but the vast majority do not have disabilities. The present invention provides dolls with various disabilities that children with those disabilities can relate to. It is important for children to see themselves represented in their dolls. Representation can empower children to embrace their identities proudly. By seeing diverse role models in their toys, children are encouraged to celebrate their uniqueness and pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations.

Some dolls have been created in the past that have attempted to address this issue and some of these dolls do help to some degree, but nothing as beneficial as the instant invention has been made.

For instance, U.S. Pat. No. 5,232,369 to Mavrikis shows a handicapped doll with a wheelchair, removeable limbs, and a removeable hair piece.

US Patent App. No. 2019/0038984 to Campbell shows a doll with a removeable cochlear implant.

Finally, U.S. Pat. No. 2,9959,891 includes a doll with measles, mumps, or a cast.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

As claimed herein, one version of the different abilities doll is a doll with a hearing impairment requiring the use of a cochlear implant, or external hearing aids. In another version, the doll has a vision impairment requiring the use of eyeglasses. Another embodiment has the doll with a birthmark or scarring. The doll could be created with an injury requiring the use of a device to immobilize injured bones. Yet another embodiment is the doll with a disability requiring the use of a port for the administering of intravenous fluids, performing blood transfusions, administering pharmaceutical drugs, performing blood draws, reducing the need for repeated needle sticks, or preventing blood clotting and infections.

There are many other versions that the different abilities doll could embody. For instance, there could be a doll that requires the use of oxygen. The doll could have a prosthetic limb. The doll could also have diabetes and require the use of a continuous glucose monitoring device. The could require a wheelchair, crutches, cane, or a walker. The doll could have a vision impairment and use a white cane. Another version would include a service animal. A doll could also come with a removable wig. Dolls could also be created with a cleft palate, dwarfism, and physical or mental deformities.

As used herein, certain terms have the following definitions:

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device that helps people with moderate to profound hearing loss perceive sound.

A birthmark is a mark on the skin that is present at birth or within a few weeks of birth. Birthmarks can be flat or raised, and can have different colors.

1. A different abilities doll comprising a doll with a disability.

2. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability is a hearing impairment requiring the use of a cochlear implant.

3. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability is a vision impairment requiring the use of eyeglasses.

4. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability is a birthmark.

5. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability is scarring.

6. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability is an injury requiring the use of a device to immobilize injured bones.

7. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability requires the use of a port for a purpose selected from the group consisting of administering of intravenous fluids, performing blood transfusions, administering pharmaceutical drugs, performing blood draws, reducing the need for repeated needle sticks, and preventing blood clotting and infections.

8. The doll of claim 1 wherein the disability is a hearing impairment requiring the use of an external hearing aid.
