Claims
- 1. An electrical connector for transferring a plurality of differential signals between electrical components, the connector comprising:a plurality of pairs of differential signal conductors disposed in parallel columns, each of the differential signal conductors having a contact portion connectable to a printed circuit board, the contact portions of the differential signal conductors also being disposed in parallel columns; a plurality of shield plates, each of the plurality of shield plates disposed adjacent one of the parallel columns of differential signal conductors; and each of the plurality of shield plates having at least one contact portion connectable to the printed circuit board, the contact portion of the shield plate disposed in one of the parallel columns of the contact portions of the differential signal conductors.
- 2. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein the contact portion of the shield plate lies along one of the parallel columns of differential signal conductors.
- 3. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein for each pair of the plurality of pairs of differential signal conductors, spacing between the differential signal conductors making up the pair is the same.
- 4. The electrical connector of claim 1, which further comprises a housing having an insulative floor through which the contact portions of the differential signal conductors and the shield plates extend therethrough.
- 5. The electrical connector of claim 4, wherein the housing further comprises side walls, each of the side walls having slots for receiving the shield plates.
- 6. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein for each pair of the plurality of pairs of differential signal conductors, spacing between the differential signal conductors making up the pair is less than spacing between adjacent parallel columns of differential signal conductors.
- 7. An electrical connector system for transferring a plurality of differential signals, the connector system comprising:a connector including a plurality of connector modules that are positioned parallel to one another, each connector module comprising: a plurality of pairs of differential signal conductors disposed in a column, each of the differential signal conductors having a contact portion connectable to a printed circuit board, the contact portions of the differential signal conductors also being disposed in a column; a shield plate disposed adjacent the column of differential signal conductor pairs, the shield plate having at least one contact portion connectable to the printed circuit board; the contact portion of the shield plate lying in the column of the contact portions of the differential signal conductors; and the printed circuit board having openings for receiving the contact portions of the differential signal conductors and the shield plates.
- 8. The electrical connector system of claim 7, wherein for each pair of the plurality of pairs of differential signal conductors, spacing between the differential signal conductors making up the pair is the same.
- 9. The electrical connector system of claim 7, wherein the connector further comprises a housing having an insulative floor through which the contact portions of the differential signal conductors and the shield plates extend therethrough.
- 10. The electrical connector system of claim 9, wherein the housing further comprises side walls, each of the side walls having slots for receiving the shield plates.
