Claims
- 1. A diffusely reflecting polarizer, comprising:
- a diffusing element adapted to alter direction of and to substantially maintain polarization of light incident upon it; and
- a reflective polarizing element, wherein the reflective polarizing element reflects light of a first polarization and transmits light of a second polarization;
- such that the light of the second polarization is diffusely transmitted by the diffusely reflecting polarizer.
- 2. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1 wherein the reflective polarizing element transmits at least 80% of normal light of a second polarization and transmits at least 80% of light of the second polarization incident at an angle 60 degrees from normal.
- 3. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1, wherein the reflective polarizing element reflects at least 90% of normal light of the first polarization and reflects at least 90% of normal light of the first polarization incident at an angle 60 degrees from normal.
- 4. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 3 wherein the reflective polarizing element transmits at least 90% of normal light of a second polarization and transmits at least 90% of light of the second polarization incident at an angle 60 degrees from normal.
- 5. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1, where in the diffusing element comprises a diffusing adhesive.
- 6. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 5 wherein the diffusing adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive.
- 7. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1 wherein the reflective polarizing element reflects at least 80% of normal light of a first polarization and at least 80% of light of the first polarization incident at an angle 60 degrees from normal.
- 8. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1 wherein the reflective polarizing element comprises a plurality of layers.
- 9. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 8 wherein the reflective polarizing element comprises a plurality of layers, and further wherein a refractive index difference between at least two adjacent layers in a first in-plane direction is greater than a refractive index difference between the at least two adjacent layer in a second in-plane direction.
- 10. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 9 wherein the at least two adjacent layers are comprised Of different materials.
- 11. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1 wherein the diffusing element retains at least 70% of the initial state of polarization of light transmitted by the diffusing element.
- 12. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 11, wherein the diffusing element retains at least 85% of the initial state of polarization of light transmitted by the diffusing element.
- 13. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 12 wherein the diffusing element retains at least 90% of the initial state of polarization of light transmitted by the diffusing element.
- 14. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1 wherein the diffusing element has a reflectivity of less than 20%.
- 15. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 14 wherein the diffusing element has a reflectivity of less than 8%.
- 16. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 15 wherein the diffusing element has a reflectivity of less than 4%.
- 17. The diffusely reflecting polarizer of claim 1 wherein the light of the first polarization incident upon a diffusing element side of the diffusely reflecting polarizer is diffusely reflected.
- 18. A diffusely reflecting mirror, comprising:
- a diffusing element adapted to alter the direction of and to substantially maintain the polarization of light incident upon it; and
- a reflective mirror element which reflects light of a first and second polarization;
- wherein said diffusing element is an adhesive.
- 19. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 18 wherein the reflective mirror element comprises a plurality of layers.
- 20. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 18, wherein said adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive.
- 21. A diffusely reflecting mirror, comprising:
- a diffusing element adapted to alter the direction of and to substantially maintain the polarization of light incident upon it; and
- a reflective mirror element which reflects light of a first and second polarization;
- wherein the reflective mirror element comprises a plurality of layers, and further wherein a refractive index difference between at least two adjacent layers in a first in-plane direction and a refractive index difference between the at least two adjacent layers in a second in-plane direction are greater than a refractive index difference between the at least two adjacent layers in a third out-of-plane direction.
- 22. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 21 wherein the reflective mirror element reflects at least 95% of normal light and reflects at least 95% of light at an angle 60 degrees from normal.
- 23. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 21 wherein the at least two adjacent layers are comprised of different materials.
- 24. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 21 wherein the diffusing element retains at least 70% of the initial state of polarization of light transmitted by the diffusing element.
- 25. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 24 wherein the diffusing element retains at least 85% of the initial state of polarization of light transmitted by the diffusing element.
- 26. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 25 wherein the diffusing element retains at least 90% of the initial state of polarization of light transmitted by the diffusing element.
- 27. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 21 wherein the diffusing element has a reflectivity of less than 20%.
- 28. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 27 wherein the diffusing element has a reflectivity of less than 8%.
- 29. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 28 wherein the diffusing element has a reflectivity of less than 4%.
- 30. The diffusely reflecting mirror of claim 21 wherein the reflective mirror element reflects at least 80% of normal light and at least 80% of light incident at an angle 60 degrees from the normal.
- 31. A diffusely reflecting polarizer, comprising:
- a diffusing element having a reflectivity of less than 20%, said diffusing element adapted to alter the direction of light incident upon it; and
- a reflective polarizing element which reflects light of a first polarization and transmits light of a second polarization;
- wherein the reflective polarizing element comprises a plurality of layers, wherein a refractive index difference between at least two adjacent layers in a first in-plane direction and a refractive index difference between the at least two adjacent layers in a second in-plane direction are greater than a refractive index difference between the at least two adjacent layers in a third out-of-plane direction, and wherein at least 70% of the light transmitted by the diffusing element is in its initial state of polarization.
