Claims
- 1. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; circuitry associated with the driver for measuring current supplied to the driver; a sensor connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit; and a control and measurement system connected to the driver and the sensor, the control and measurement system comprising circuitry to:
receive a sensor signal from the sensor, generate a drive signal based on the sensor signal using digital signal processing, supply the drive signal to the driver, and generate a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit based on the sensor signal.
- 2. The digital flowmeter of claim 1, wherein the circuitry comprises a resistor in series with the driver and an analog-to-digital converter in parallel with the resistor to measure a voltage across the resistor, to convert the measured voltage to a digital value, and to supply the digital value to the control and measurement system.
- 3. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; first and second sensors connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit; a control and measurement system connected to the driver and the sensors, the control and measurement system comprising circuitry to:
receive a first sensor signal from the first sensor, receive a second sensor signal from the second sensor, generate a drive signal based on the first and second sensor signals using digital signal processing, supply the drive signal to the driver, and generate a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit based on the first and second sensor signals; wherein the control and measurement system combines the sensor signals to produce a combined signal and to generate the drive signal based on the combined signal.
- 4. The digital flowmeter of claim 3, wherein the control and measurement system generates the drive signal by applying a gain to the combined signal.
- 5. The digital flowmeter of claim 4, wherein the control and measurement system generates the drive signal by applying a large gain to the combined signal to initiate motion of the conduit and generating a periodic signal having a phase and frequency based on a phase and frequency of a sensor signal as the drive signal after motion has been initiated.
- 6. The digital flowmeter of claim 3, wherein the control and measurement system combines the sensor signals by summing the sensor signals.
- 7. The digital flowmeter of claim 6, wherein the control and measurement system modifies an amplitude of one of the sensor signals using a ratio of an amplitude of the other sensor signal to the amplitude of the one sensor signal prior to summing the sensor signals.
- 8. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; a sensor connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit; and a control and measurement system connected to the driver and the sensor, the control and measurement system comprising circuitry to:
receive a sensor signal from the sensor, generate a drive signal based on the sensor signal using digital signal processing, supply the drive signal to the driver, and generate a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit based on the sensor signal; wherein the control and measurement system initiates motion of the conduit by using a first mode of signal generation to generate the drive signal, and sustains motion of the conduit using a second mode of signal generation to generate the drive signal.
- 9. The digital flowmeter of claim 8, wherein the first mode of signal generation comprises synthesis of a periodic signal having a desired property and the second mode of signal generation comprises using a feedback loop including the sensor signal.
- 10. The digital flowmeter of claim 9, wherein the desired property comprises a desired initial frequency of conduit vibration.
- 11. The digital flowmeter of claim 8, wherein the first mode of signal generation comprises using a feedback loop including the sensor signal and the second mode of signal generation comprises synthesis of a periodic signal having a desired property.
- 12. The digital flowmeter of claim 11, wherein the desired property comprises a frequency and a phase corresponding to a frequency and a phase of the sensor signal.
- 13. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; a sensor connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit; and a control and measurement system connected to the driver and the sensor, the control and measurement system comprising circuitry to:
receive a sensor signal from the sensor, generate a drive signal based on the sensor signal using digital signal processing, supply the drive signal to the driver, and generate a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit based on the sensor signal; wherein the control and measurement system digitally generates a gain for use in generating the drive signal based on one or more properties of the sensor signal.
- 14. The digital flowmeter of claim 13, wherein the control and measurement system digitally generates the gain based on an amplitude of the sensor signal.
- 15. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; a sensor connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit; and a control and measurement system connected to the driver and the sensor, the control and measurement system comprising circuitry to:
receive a sensor signal from the sensor, generate a drive signal based on the sensor signal using digital signal processing, supply the drive signal to the driver, and generate a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit based on the sensor signal; wherein the control and measurement system comprises a controller to generate a gain signal based on the sensor signal and a multiplying digital-to-analog converter connected to the controller to receive the gain signal and to generate the drive signal based on the gain signal.
- 16. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; a sensor connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit; and a control and measurement system connected to the driver and the sensor, the control and measurement system comprising circuitry to:
receive a sensor signal from the sensor, wherein the sensor signal is a periodic signal, generate a drive signal based on the sensor signal using digital signal processing, supply the drive signal to the driver, and generate a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit based on the sensor signal; wherein the control and measurement system:
collects a first data set for a period of the periodic signal; processes the first data set to generate the drive signal and the measurement; and collects a second data set for a subsequent period of the sensor signal simultaneously with processing the first data set.
- 17. A digital flowmeter comprising:
a vibratable conduit; a driver connected to the conduit and operable to impart motion to the conduit; a sensor connected to the conduit and operable to sense the motion of the conduit and to produce a periodic sensor signal; and a control system connected to the driver and the sensor to:
collect data corresponding to a current cycle of the sensor signal, process the data for the current cycle to generate a drive signal and a measurement of a property of material flowing through the conduit, supply the drive signal to the driver, and collect data corresponding to a subsequent cycle of the sensor signal simultaneously with processing the data for the current cycle.
- 18. The digital flowmeter of claim 17, wherein the sensor signal is generally periodic and the control system processes the sensor signal in sets, wherein each set includes data for a complete cycle of the periodic sensor signal.
- 19. The digital flowmeter of claim 18, wherein consecutive sets include data for overlapping cycles of the periodic sensor signal.
- 20. The digital flowmeter of claim 18, wherein the control system estimates an end point of a cycle using a frequency of a previous cycle.
- 21. The digital flowmeter of claim 18, wherein the control system analyzes data for a cycle to determine whether the cycle merits further processing.
- 22. The digital flowmeter of claim 21, wherein the control system determines that a cycle does not merit further processing when data for the cycle does not conform to expected behavior for the data, where the expected behavior is based on one or more parameters of a previous cycle.
- 23. The digital flowmeter of claim 22, wherein the control system determines that a cycle does not merit further processing when a frequency for the cycle differs from a frequency for the previous cycle by more than a threshold amount.
- 24. The digital flowmeter of claim 23, wherein the control system determines whether the frequency for the cycle differs from the frequency for the previous cycle by comparing values at certain points in the cycle to values that would occur if the frequency for the cycle equaled the frequency for the previous cycle.
- 25. The digital flowmeter of claim 17, wherein the control system generates the drive signal by synthesizing a sine wave having a property corresponding to a property of the sensor signal.
- 26. The digital flowmeter of claim 17, wherein the control system generates the drive signal by synthesizing a sine wave having a phase and a frequency corresponding to a phase and a frequency of the sensor signal.
