Claims
- 1. A digital recording apparatus including rotary magnetic heads for recording digital information on a magnetic tape in the form of data blocks having a predetermined length, said apparatus further comprising:
- means for generating an ID signal for each of said data blocks, said ID signal having a length of at least two bytes, one of said bytes including a plurality of data bits which identify at least an address of the respective data block and another of said bytes including a plurality of data bits which identify a characteristic of the information contained in the respective data block;
- means for dividing each of said bytes of said ID signal into a sequence of symbols each comprised of four bits;
- means for generating at least two parity symbols according to an error correction code having the capability for correcting respective errors in said sequence of symbols; and
- means for recording said parity symbols on said magnetic tape with said ID signal.
- 2. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 1; wherein said error correction code is a Reed-Solomon code.
- 3. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 1; wherein said digital information includes a video signal.
- 4. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 1; further comprising means for compressing and encoding said digital information before said information is recorded on said magnetic tape.
- 5. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 4; wherein said means for compressing and encoding said digital information includes means for performing a discrete cosine transform upon blocks of said digital information.
- 6. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 5; wherein said ID signal includes a frame identification bit.
- 7. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 5; wherein said ID signal includes data bits that identify a type of the information contained in the respective data block.
- 8. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 5; wherein said ID signal includes a number for identifying a recording track in which the respective data block is recorded.
- 9. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 5; wherein said ID signal includes a sync block number for identifying the respective data block.
- 10. A digital recording apparatus according to claim 5; wherein said error correction code is a Reed-Solomon code.
- 11. A method of recording digital information on a magnetic tape in the form of data blocks having a predetermined length, comprising the steps of:
- generating an ID signal for each of said data blocks, said ID signal having a length of at least two bytes, one of said bytes including a plurality of data bits which identify at least an address of the respective data block and another of said bytes including a plurality of data bits which identify a characteristic of the information contained in the respective data block;
- dividing each of said bytes of said ID signal into a sequence of symbols each comprised of four bits;
- generating at least two parity symbols according to an error correction code having the capability for correcting respective errors in said sequence of symbols; and
- recording said parity symbols on said magnetic tape with said ID signal.
- 12. A method of recording digital information according to claim 11; wherein said error correction code is a Reed-Solomon code.
- 13. A method of recording digital information according to claim 11; wherein said digital information includes a video signal.
- 14. A method of recording digital information according to claim 11; further comprising the step of compressing and encoding said digital information before the same is recorded on said magnetic tape.
- 15. A method of recording digital information according to claim 14; wherein said step of compressing and encoding said digital information comprises performing a discrete cosine transform upon blocks of said digital information.
- 16. A method of recording digital information according to claim 15; wherein said ID signal includes a frame identification bit.
- 17. A method of recording digital information according to claim 15; wherein said ID signal includes data bits that identify a type of the information contained in the respective data block.
- 18. A method of recording digital information according to claim 15; wherein said ID signal includes a number for identifying a recording track in which the respective data block is recorded.
- 19. A method of recording digital information according to claim 15; wherein said ID signal includes a sync block number for identifying the respective data block.
- 20. A method of recording digital information according to claim 15; wherein said error correction code is a Reed-Solomon code.
