Claims
- 1. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus for reproducing digital video signals azimuth-recorded in oblique tracks on a magnetic tape, said oblique tracks having one of a number of widths determined by the width of a head or heads used during recording, said apparatus comprising:
- a pair of rotary magnetic heads each having a predetermined head width and a respective azimuth angle which is different from that of the other magnetic head for helically scanning said oblique tracks in said magnetic tape as said tape is advanced;
- tape drive means for driving said tape at a tape transport speed selected from a standard speed and another speed that is one-half said standard speed;
- tape drive control means for controlling said tape drive means to drive said tape at said standard speed when said oblique tracks have a track width equal to said predetermined head width, and to drive said tape at said other speed when said oblique tracks have a track width that is one-half said predetermined head width; and
- tracking control means for causing each of said magnetic heads to simultaneously scan a respective pair of adjacent oblique tracks when said oblique tracks have a track width that is one-half said predetermined head width, one track of each said pair having a direction of magnetization that corresponds to the azimuth angle of the one of said pair of magnetic heads then scanning a pair of oblique tracks and the other track of said pair having a direction of magnetization that corresponds to the azimuth angle of the other of said pair of magnetic heads.
- 2. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 1; wherein a first of said magnetic heads simultaneously scans an adjacent pair of said oblique tracks after a second of said magnetic heads has simultaneously scanned the same adjacent pair of said oblique tracks, said first and second magnetic heads having mutually different azimuth angles.
- 3. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus for reproducing digital video signals azimuth-recorded in oblique tracks on a magnetic tape, said oblique tracks having one of a plurality of widths determined by the width of a head or heads used during recording, said apparatus comprising:
- means including a pair of rotary magnetic heads each having a predetermined head width and a respective azimuth angle which is different from that of the other magnetic head for helically scanning said oblique tracks in said magnetic tape as said tape is advanced;
- tape drive means for driving said tape at a tape transport speed selected from a standard speed and another speed that is different than said standard speed;
- tape drive control means for controlling said tape drive means to drive said tape at said standard speed when said oblique tracks have a track width approximately equal to said predetermined head width, and to drive said tape at said other speed when said oblique tracks have a track width different than said predetermined width; and
- tracking control means for causing said magnetic heads to scan said oblique tracks when said tape is advanced at said standard speed and when said tape is advanced at said other speed so as to enable said magnetic heads to reproduce said digital video signals recorded in said oblique tracks when said head width of said magnetic heads is approximately equal to said track width of said oblique tracks and when said head width of said magnetic heads is larger than or smaller than said track width of said oblique tracks.
- 4. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said other speed is slower than said standard speed and wherein said tape drive control means controls said tape drive means to drive said tape at the slower speed when said predetermined head width is larger than the width of said oblique tracks.
- 5. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said slower speed is approximately one-half said standard speed and wherein said predetermined head width is approximately twice the width of said oblique tracks.
- 6. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said head width has a value of approximately 10 .mu.m and the width of said oblique tracks has a value of approximately 5 .mu.m.
- 7. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said other speed is faster than said standard speed and wherein said tape drive control means controls said tape drive means to drive said tape at the faster speed when said predetermined head width is smaller than the width of said oblique tracks.
- 8. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said faster speed is approximately twice said standard speed and wherein said predetermined head width is approximately one-half the width of said oblique tracks.
- 9. A digital video tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said predetermined head width has a value of approximately 5 .mu.m and the width of said oblique tracks has a value of approximately 10 .mu.m.
- 10. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus for reproducing digital video signals recorded in oblique tracks on a magnetic tape, in which said oblique tracks have either a wide width or a narrow width determined by the width of a head or heads used during recording, said apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of magnetic heads which helically scan said magnetic tape as said tape is advanced, in which all of the magnetic heads have a predetermined head width;
- tape drive means for driving said tape at a tape transport speed selected from a standard speed and another speed that is different from said standard speed;
- tape drive control means for controlling said tape drive means to drive said tape at said standard speed when said head width is approximately the same as the width of said oblique tracks on said tape, and to drive said tape at said other speed when said head width is different from the width of said oblique tracks; and
- tracking control means for causing said magnetic heads to scan said oblique tracks when said tape is advanced at said standard speed and when said tape is advanced at said other speed so as to enable said magnetic heads to reproduce said digital video signals recorded in said oblique tracks when said head width of said magnetic heads is approximately equal to the width of said oblique tracks and when said head width of said magnetic heads is larger than or smaller than the width of said oblique tracks.
- 11. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said other speed is slower than said standard speed and wherein said tape drive control means controls said tape drive means to drive said tape at the slower speed when said head width is larger than the width of said oblique tracks.
- 12. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said slower speed is approximately one-half said standard speed and wherein said head width is approximately twice the width of said oblique tracks.
- 13. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said head width has a value of approximately 10 .mu.m and the width of said oblique tracks has a value of approximately 5 .mu.m.
- 14. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said other speed is faster than said standard speed and wherein said tape drive control means controls said tape drive means to drive said tape at the faster speed when said head width is smaller than the width of said oblique tracks.
- 15. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said faster speed is approximately twice said standard speed and wherein said head width is approximately one-half the width of said oblique tracks.
- 16. A digital video tape reproducing apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said head width has a value of approximately 5 .mu.m and the width of said oblique tracks has a value of approximately 10 .mu.m.
- 17. An apparatus for reproducing digital video signals recorded in oblique tracks on a magnetic tape, said oblique tracks having either a narrow width so as to form a recording having a relatively large amount of data or a wide width so as to form a recording having a lesser amount of data, in which the width of said oblique tracks is determined by the width of a head or heads used during recording, said apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of magnetic heads which helically scan said magnetic tape as said tape is advanced, in which all of the magnetic heads have the same predetermined head width having a value which is approximately the same as one of said narrow width and said wide width;
- tape drive means for driving said tape at a tape transport speed selected from a standard speed and one of a speed slower than said standard speed and a speed faster than said standard speed;
- tape drive control means for controlling said tape drive means to drive said tape at said standard speed when said oblique tracks have a track width approximately equal to said predetermined head width, to drive said tape at said speed slower than said standard speed when said oblique tracks have said narrow width and the value of said predetermined head width is approximately the same as said wide width, and to drive said tape at said speed faster than said standard speed when said oblique tracks have said wide width and the value of said predetermined head width is approximately the same as said narrow width; and
- tracking control means for causing said magnetic heads to scan said oblique tracks when said tape is advanced at any of said standard speed, said speed slower than said standard speed, and said speed faster than said standard speed so as to enable said magnetic heads to reproduce said digital video signals recorded in said oblique tracks when said head width of said magnetic heads is approximately equal to, and larger than or smaller than the width of said oblique tracks.
- 18. An apparatus for reproducing digital video signals according to claim 17, wherein said narrow width has a value of approximately 5 .mu.m and said wide width has a value of approximately 10 .mu.m.
- 19. An apparatus for reproducing digital video signals according to claim 18, wherein the faster speed is approximately twice said standard speed and the slower speed is approximately one half said standard speed.
