Claims
- 1. An assembly for an intravascular catheter, said assembly comprising:
- an elongated shaft with a proximal portion, a distal portion, and an inflation lumen extending therethrough; and
- a balloon member having a chamber therein in fluid communication with the inflation lumen; and
- a guide wire lumen coextending with a portion of said balloon member for receiving a guide wire, said balloon member defining a portion of the guide wire lumen, wherein the side wall of the balloon member has a longitudinal rib protruding outwardly therefrom which defines at least a portion of the guide wire lumen therein.
- 2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the entire guide wire lumen is defined by a balloon member.
- 3. The assembly of claim 2 wherein the chamber is defined by a side wall of the balloon member and the guide wire lumen is formed in said side wall.
- 4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the guide wire lumen is substantially straight.
- 5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the balloon member has only one opening therethrough in communication with said chamber.
- 6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the length of the guide wire lumen is shorter than the length of the inflation chamber.
- 7. The assembly of claim 1 wherein a proximal end of the guide wire lumen terminates distally of a proximal end of the inflation chamber.
- 8. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the balloon member is made of polymeric material.
- 9. The assembly of claim 7 wherein the balloon member is made of a polyolefin copolymer.
- 10. An assembly for an intravascular catheter, said assembly comprising:
- an elongated shaft with a proximal portion, a distal portion, and an inflation lumen extending therethrough; and
- a balloon member having a longitudinal chamber therein in fluid communication with said inflation lumen and only one opening therethrough communicating with said chamber, a side wall of said balloon member having a guide wire lumen formed therein for receiving a guide wire, said guide wire lumen being substantially straight and coextending longitudinally with a portion of the chamber, wherein the side wall of the balloon member has a longitudinal rib protruding outwardly therefrom which defines at least a portion of the guide wire lumen therein.
- 11. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the balloon member is made of polymeric material.
- 12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein the balloon member is made of a polyolefin copolymer.
- 13. An intravascular balloon catheter comprising:
- a dilation balloon having an interior chamber therein and only one opening in a proximal portion thereof in communication with said chamber;
- an elongated shaft having a proximal portion adapted to extend outside the body of a patient during use, a distal portion connected to said dilation balloon and adapted for positioning intravascularly during use, and an inflation lumen extending therethrough in fluid communication with said chamber, a distal end of said shaft being adjacent said proximal opening in the balloon; and
- a substantially straight guide wire lumen spaced exteriorly from said shaft and coextending with a portion of said balloon for receiving a guide wire, said guide wire lumen being adjacent a side wall of the balloon, wherein the side wall of the balloon has a longitudinal rib protruding outwardly therefrom which defines at least a portion of the guide wire lumen therein.
- 14. The catheter of claim 13 wherein the guide wire lumen is formed in the side wall of the balloon.
- 15. The catheter of claim 14 wherein the side wall of the balloon has a longitudinal rib protruding inwardly therefrom which defines the guide wire lumen therein.
- 16. The catheter of claim 13 wherein the length of the guide wire lumen is shorter than the length of the inflation chamber.
- 17. The catheter of claim 16 wherein a proximal end of the guide wire lumen terminates distally of a proximal end of the inflation chamber.
