Claims
- 1. A sampling probe for diluting and dispensing a blood sample comprising:
- a. coaxially disposed hollow cylindrical members defining sample and diluent conduits;
- b. a mixing region in flow communication with said conduits;
- c. an outlet and an inlet duct placing said mixing region in flow communication with the exterior of the probe;
- d. first and second reversible positive displacement pumps each having respective flow means constituting fluid intakes and fluid discharges when operating in a forward direction and visa versa in reverse direction;
- e. flow coupling means connecting the forward direction fluid intake means of both said pumps to a source of diluent and each of the forward direction fluid discharge flow means to one of said probe conduits, said pumps and flow coupling means being normally filled with diluent in operation;
- f. a reversible motor drive means and gearing coupling said motor to said pumps; and
- g. a one way clutch disposed between said drive means and one of said pumps having its forward operation discharge flow means connected to said diluent conduit of the probe, said clutch being oriented to render said one pump inoperative during reverse operation of said pump drive motor.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising control means for said pump drive motor, including a manually operable switch on said probe and effective upon each successive actuation of said switch to:
- a. initiate reverse operation of said pump drive motor to cause aspiration of a metered quantity of blood sample through said inlet and outlet duct; and
- b. initiate reverse operation of said pump drive motor until said metered quantity of the sample is drawn through said mixing region and wholly contained within said sample conduit followed by forward operation of said pump drive motor to cause discharge of diluent and sample into and through said mixing region and dispense mixed sample and diluent through said duct.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said control means are further effective, after dispensing of mixed sample and diluent, to discharge further diluent through said conduits, mixing region and duct to effect cleansing thereof.
- 4. A sampling probe for diluting and dispensing a blood sample comprising:
- a. coaxially disposed hollow cylindrical members defining a sample conduit and a diluent conduit;
- b. a mixing region in flow communication with said conduit;
- c. an inlet and an outlet placing said mixing region in flow communication with the exterior of the probe;
- d. a first and a second pump means each having flow means constituting fluid intake and fluid discharge means when operating in a forward and visa versa in reverse direction;
- e. flow coupling means coupling each forward operation intake flow means to a source of diluent and each forward operation fluid discharge flow means to one said probe conduit; and
- f. means to selectively actuate both said pump means in said forward direction or to actuate only one said pump means in said reverse direction and inactuate said other pump means.
