Claims
- 1. A direct injected internal combustion engine having a cylinder block defining a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block and closing said cylinder bore at one end of said piston, said cylinder head, said piston, and said cylinder bore forming a combustion chamber, an intake passage arrangement formed in said cylinder head on one side of a plane containing said cylinder bore axis, said intake passage arrangement originating at an inlet opening arrangement formed in an outer surface of said cylinder head, a spark plug mounted in said cylinder head with its spark gap disposed contiguous to the cylinder bore axis, a fuel injector mounted in said cylinder head below said inlet opening arrangement of said intake passage arrangement and disposed at an angle so as to spray toward the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis from said intake passage arrangement, and a water jacket formed in said cylinder head and extending along at least the under side of said fuel injector.
- 2. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the intake passage arrangement serves the combustion chamber through at least a pair of intake valve seats formed in the cylinder head with their centers being positioned on the one side of the plane containing the axis of the cylinder bore and further including a pair of exhaust valve seats formed in said cylinder head on the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis.
- 3. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 2, wherein the fuel injector is mounted in the cylinder head between the intake valve seats.
- 4. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the cylinder head water jacket also extends on the upper side of the fuel injector.
- 5. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 2, wherein the intake passage arrangement comprises a pair of intake passages extending through one side of the cylinder head and terminating at the intake valve seats, said intake passages having an angularly inclined straight portion extending toward the valves seats and terminating in a curved portion that joins them with the valve seats.
- 6. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 5, wherein the fuel injector is disposed in substantial part below the straight portions of the intake passages and extends generally parallel to them.
- 7. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 6, wherein the fuel injector is disposed between the intake passages.
- 8. A direct injected internal combustion engine having a cylinder block defining a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block and closing said cylinder bore at one end of said piston, said cylinder head, said piston, and said cylinder bore forming a combustion chamber, an intake passage arrangement formed in said cylinder head on one side of a plane containing said cylinder bore axis, a spark plug mounted in said cylinder head with its spark gap disposed contiguous to the cylinder bore axis, a fuel injector mounted in said cylinder head below said intake passage arrangement and disposed at an angle so as to spray toward the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis from said intake passage arrangement, and a water jacket formed in said cylinder head and extending along at least the under side of said fuel injector and on the upper side of said fuel injector.
- 9. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 8, wherein the fuel injector sprays into said combustion chamber through a flow opening formed at least in part through a lower surface of the cylinder head that faces the cylinder block, said flow opening being spaced inwardly toward the cylinder bore axis from a plane defined by the axes of a pair of threaded fasteners that secure said cylinder head to said cylinder block.
- 10. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 8, wherein the intake passage arrangement comprises a pair of intake passages extending through one side of the cylinder head and terminating at a pair of intake valve seats, said intake passages having an angularly inclined straight portion extending toward the valves seats and terminating in a curved portion that joins them with the valve seats.
- 11. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 10, wherein the fuel injector is disposed in substantial part below the straight portions of the intake passages and extends generally parallel to them.
- 12. A direct injected internal combustion engine having a cylinder block defining a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block and closing said cylinder bore at one end of said piston, said cylinder head, said piston, and said cylinder bore forming a combustion chamber, an intake passage arrangement formed in said cylinder head on one side of a plane containing said cylinder bore axis, a spark plug mounted in said cylinder head with its spark gap disposed contiguous to the cylinder bore axis, a fuel injector mounted in said cylinder head below said intake passage arrangement and disposed at an angle so as to spray toward the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis from said intake passage arrangement, a water jacket formed in said cylinder head and extending along at least one side of said fuel injector, and a flow control valve for selectively controlling the flow direction into said combustion chamber through said intake passage arrangement, said fuel injector lying below said flow control valve.
- 13. A direct injected internal combustion engine having a cylinder block defining a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block and closing said cylinder bore at one end of said piston, said cylinder head, said piston, and said cylinder bore forming a combustion chamber, an intake passage arrangement formed in said cylinder head on one side of a plane containing said cylinder bore axis comprising a pair of intake passages extending through one side of said cylinder head and terminating at a pair of intake valve seats, said intake passages having angularly inclined straight portions extending toward the valve seats and terminating in curved portions that join them with the valve seats, a spark plug mounted in said cylinder head with its spark gap disposed contiguous to the cylinder bore axis, and a fuel injector mounted in said cylinder head below said intake passage arrangement and disposed at an angle so as to spray toward the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis from said intake passage arrangement, said fuel injector having an axis that is generally parallel to a main flow axis of the intake passage arrangement and disposed in substantial part below said straight portions of said intake passages and extending generally parallel to them.
- 14. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 13, wherein the fuel injector is disposed between the intake passages.
- 15. A direct injected internal combustion engine having a cylinder block defining a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block and closing said cylinder bore at one end of said piston, said cylinder head, said piston, and said cylinder bore forming a combustion chamber, an intake passage arrangement formed in said cylinder head on one side of a plane containing said cylinder bore axis, a spark plug mounted in said cylinder head with its spark gap disposed contiguous to the cylinder bore axis, a fuel injector mounted in said cylinder head and disposed at an angle so as to spray toward the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis from said intake passage arrangement, and a flow control valve for selectively controlling the flow direction into the combustion chamber through said intake passage arrangement, said fuel injector lying below said flow control valve.
- 16. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 15, wherein the flow control valve permits substantially unrestricted flow into the combustion chamber in one position and restricts and redirects the flow in another position.
- 17. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 16, wherein the flow control valve creates a swirling condition in the combustion chamber in the other position.
- 18. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 17, wherein the swirl created by the flow control valve comprises a tumble in the combustion chamber.
- 19. A direct injected internal combustion engine having a cylinder block defining a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder bore, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block and closing said cylinder bore at one end of said piston, said cylinder head, said piston, and said cylinder bore forming a combustion chamber, an intake passage arrangement formed in said cylinder head on one side of a plane containing said cylinder bore axis, a spark plug mounted in said cylinder head with its spark gap disposed contiguous to the cylinder bore axis, and a fuel injector mounted in said cylinder head below said intake passage arrangement and disposed at an angle so as to spray toward the other side of said plane containing said cylinder bore axis from said intake passage arrangement, said fuel injector spraying into said combustion chamber through a flow opening formed at least in part through a lower surface of said cylinder head that faces said cylinder block and which surface is parallel to the surface of said cylinder block to which said cylinder head is joined.
- 20. A direct injected internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 19 wherein the flow opening is spaced inwardly toward the cylinder bore axis from a plane defined by the axes of a pair of threaded fasteners that secure the cylinder head to the cylinder block.
