Claims
- 1. Apparatus for selectively receiving electromagnetic radiation from a source of electromagnetic radiation in a borehole telemetry system comprising:three magnetometers positioned orthogonally to each other, and a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with a source of electromagnetic radiation.
- 2. Apparatus for selectively receiving electromagnetic radiation from a source of electromagnetic radiation in a borehole telemetry system comprising:three antennas positioned orthogonally to each other, and a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three antennas to generate an output aligned with a source of electromagnetic radiation.
- 3. Apparatus for transmitting electromagnetic signals from a borehole to a surface location comprising;an electromagnetic transmitter in a borehole; three magnetometers positioned orthogonally to each other near the surface location of the borehole, and a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with the direction of the magnetic field of signals from said electromagnetic transmitter.
- 4. Apparatus for transmitting electromagnetic signals from a borehole to a surface location comprising;an electromagnetic transmitter in a borehole; three antennas positioned orthogonally to each other near the surface location of the borehole; and a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three antennas to generate an output aligned with the direction of the electric field of signals from said electromagnetic transmitter.
- 5. Apparatus for removing noise from electromagnetic signals received in a borehole electromagnetic telemetry system comprising:three magnetometers positioned orthogonally to each other; and a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with a magnetic field generated by a source of electromagnetic noise.
- 6. Apparatus for removing noise from electromagnetic signals received in a borehole electromagnetic telemetry system comprising:three antennas positioned orthogonally to each other; and a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three antennas to generate an output aligned with an electric field generated by a source of electromagnetic noise.
- 7. Apparatus for receiving data transmitted by an electromagnetic transmitter in a borehole in the presence of a source of electromagnetic noise comprising:a magnetometer aligned with a field generated by said electromagnetic transmitter; a three axis electric field sensor; a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three axis electric field sensor to generate an output aligned with an electric field generated by said source of electromagnetic noise; and a noise canceller having inputs coupled to said magnetometer and said weighted adder and having an output providing a signal with reduced noise content.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein:the magnetometer comprises three magnetometers positioned orthogonally to each other and a weighted adder combining the outputs of the three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with a field generated by the electromagnetic transmitter.
- 9. Apparatus for receiving data transmitted by an electromagnetic transmitter in a borehole in the presence of a source of electromagnetic noise comprising:a three axis electric field sensor; a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three axis electric field sensor to generate an output aligned with a electric field generated by said electromagnetic transmitter; a magnetometer aligned with the magnetic field produced by said source of electromagnetic noise; and a noise canceller having inputs coupled to said weighted adder and said magnetometer and having an output providing a signal with reduced noise content.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein:the magnetometer comprises three magnetometers positioned orthogonally to each other and a weighted adder combining the outputs of the three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with a field generated by the source of electromagnetic noise.
- 11. Apparatus for receiving data transmitted by an electromagnetic transmitter in a borehole in the presence of a source of electromagnetic noise comprising;three magnetometers positioned orthogonally to each other, a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with said electromagnetic transmitter; a weighted adder for combining the outputs of said three magnetometers to generate an output aligned with said source of electromagnetic noise; and a noise canceller having inputs coupled to said weighted adders and having an output providing a signal with reduced noise content.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein;said noise canceller comprises an adaptive filter.
