Claims
- 1. A ventilation register for selectively diverting a flow of air passing in a substantially vertical direction through a ventilation duct perpendicular to a room surface on which said register is mounted, said register comprising:
- a fixed flange section configured to be mounted to a discharge opening of said ventilation duct for passage of said flow of air in said substantially vertical direction therethrough;
- a pivoting deflector section for selectively diverting said flow of air, said deflector section comprising:
- a top plate having at least one opening formed therein;
- hinge means joining a rearward edge of said top plate to said fixed flange section, so as to permit said top plate to be pivoted in an upward direction from a first angular position in which said top plate rests substantially parallel to said room surface and perpendicular to said flow of air passing in said vertical direction from said vent duct, to a second angular position in which said top plate extends at an upward and forward angle to both said room surface and said flow of air from said vent duct;
- a front portion extending downwardly from a front edge of said top plate and having at least one opening formed therein which extends downwardly over an angular distance, so that pivoting said deflector section in said upward direction about said hinge means increases an area of said opening in said front portion which extends above said flange section so as to increase an amount of said air flow which can pass therethrough; and
- adjustable closure means operatively associated with said top plate for selective movement between a first position in which said at least one opening in said top plate is opened and a second position in which said opening in said top plate is blocked by said closure means, so that with said top plate portion pivoted to said second angular position, positioning said closure means in said first position increases a portion of said flow of air which passes in said substantially vertical direction through said at least one opening in said top plate, and positioning said closure means in said second position increases a portion of said flow of air which is deflected by said top plate from said substantially vertical direction to a substantially horizontal direction through said opening of said front portion of said deflector section.
- 2. The ventilation register of claim 1, wherein said adjustable closure means comprises:
- a closure member having at least one portion which is configured to block a path of said flow of air in said vertical direction through said at least one opening in said top plate when said closure means is in said second position, and to move out of said path through said opening in said top plate when said closure means is in said first position.
- 3. The ventilation register of claim 2, wherein said blocking portion of said closure member comprises a panel portion which moves alternately into and out of register with said at least one opening in said top plate of said deflector section.
- 4. The ventilation register of claim 3, wherein said closure member comprises:
- a thin, substantially planar flap member which is pivotable from a first position in which said flap member lies substantially parallel to said flow of air in said vertical direction from said ventilation duct, so as to permit said flow of air to pass unobstructed in said vertical direction through said at least one opening in said top plate of said deflector section, to a second position in which said flap member lies adjacent and substantially parallel to said top plate of said deflector section so as to block passage of said flow of air through said at least one opening therein.
- 5. The ventilation register of claim 4, wherein said flap member is pivotable to a third position intermediate said first and second positions, in which said flap member lies substantially across said discharge opening of said ventilation duct and perpendicular to said flow of air therefrom, so as to prevent said flow of air from passing through either said opening in said top plate or said opening in said front portion of said deflector section.
- 6. The ventilation register of claim 3, wherein said closure member comprises:
- at least one slat member which is mounted to said top plate of said deflector section for selective sliding movement from a first position in which said slat member is positioned in register with said at least one opening therein so as to prevent passage of said flow of air therethrough, to a second position in which said slat member is positioned out of register with said opening in said top plate so as to permit said flow of air to pass unobstructed therethrough in said vertical direction.
- 7. The ventilation register of claim 3, wherein said at least one opening in said top plate of said deflector section comprises a primary grill having a plurality of openings formed therein, and said closure member comprises:
- a control plate having a plurality of openings formed therein which correspond to said plurality of openings in said primary grill, said control plate being mounted to said top plate of said deflector section for selective sliding movement from a first position in which said openings in said control plate are positioned in register with said corresponding openings in said primary grille so as to permit unobstructed passage of said flow of air therethrough in said vertical direction, to a second position in which said openings in said control plate are positioned out of register with said openings in said primary grill so as to prevent passage of said flow of air therethrough.
- 8. The ventilation register of claim 4, wherein said at least one opening in said top plate comprises a primary grill having a plurality of openings formed therein, and said flap member comprises:
- a continuous panel portion configured to extend across all of said plurality of openings in said primary grill so as to prevent passage of said flow of air therethrough when said flap member is pivoted to said second position in which said flap member lies adjacent and substantially parallel to said top plate of said deflector section.
- 9. The ventilation register of claim 1, wherein said front portion of said deflection section comprises:
- a front panel member which extends from a forward edge of said top plate of said defector section downwardly into said fixed flange section, said front panel member having said at least one opening formed therein.
- 10. The ventilation register of claim 9, wherein said at least one opening formed in said front panel member comprises:
- a secondary grill having a plurality of openings formed therein for passage of said portion of said flow of air which is deflected by said top plate in said substantially horizontal direction therethrough.
- 11. The ventilation register of claim 9, wherein said fixed flange section comprises:
- a substantially rectangular, vertically-extending sleeve portion which is configured to be received in said discharge opening of said ventilation duct.
- 12. The ventilation register of claim 1, wherein said front panel member comprises:
- an arcuate panel member which extends downwardly from said forward edge of said top plate and is received in said sleeve portion of said fixed flange portion, said arcuate panel member having a curved outer surface which is configured to tangentially engage an inner surface of said sleeve portion as said deflector section is pivoted relative to said fixed flange section.
