Claims
- 1. A spindle and disk assembly for storing data, including:
- an elongate spindle shaft rotatable on a spindle axis;
- a hub secured concentrically on the spindle shaft for rotation therewith, said hub including a plurality of projections elongate in the axial direction and arranged substantially symmetrically about the periphery of the hub, said projections being spaced apart from one another to define a plurality of flutes elongate in the axial direction, one flute disposed between each pair of adjacent projections, said flutes converging in the axial direction from one end of the hub to the other, while the projections diverge in said axial direction from said one end;
- a plurality of data storage disks and a plurality of annular disk spacing members, said disks and spacing members being stacked in an alternating arrangement of the hub and secured to the hub for rotation therewith and surrounding the hub with respective inner rims of the disks and spacing members being contiguous with radially outward surfaces of the projections; and
- a plurality of openings through each of the spacing members, said openings at least generally aligned with the flutes, for permitting the passage of air from the flutes, radially outwardly of each spacing member into an adjacent space between the pair of disks adjacent to the spacing member.
- 2. The spindle assembly of claim 1 wherein:
- the openings consist of notches formed in the spacing members, spaced apart from one another a distance corresponding to the spacing between adjacent flutes.
- 3. A disk drive hub assembly for supporting a plurality of data storage disks, including:
- a hub rotatable about a spindle axis and having a plurality of radially outward projections arranged substantially symmetrically about a periphery of the hub, said projections being elongate in the axial direction and angularly spaced apart form one another to define a plurality of radially inward flutes elongate in the axial direction, one of the flutes being disposed between each pair of adjacent projections; and
- a plurality of data storage disks, and a means for mounting the disks integrally with the hub for rotation therewith, in surrounding relation to the hub, and in axially spaced apart stacked relation to one another to define air flow spaces for radial flow of air between adjacent disks, said air flow spaces being open to said flutes for receiving air from the flutes; wherein
- replacement air from the flutes flows radially outward into the spaces as the disks and the hub, while rotating, draw air in a radially outward direction, and wherein each of the flutes converges in the axial direction away from a first end of the hub to promote the flow of air along the flutes in the axial direction from the first end.
- 4. The disk drive hub assembly of claim 3, wherein:
- said projections diverge in said axial direction away from the first end.
- 5. The hub assembly of claim 3 wherein:
- each of said flutes has a circumferential width that progressively diminishes in said axial direction away from the first end.
- 6. The hub assembly of claim 5 wherein:
- each of said flutes further has a depth that progressively diminishes in said axial direction away from the first end.
- 7. The hub assembly of claim 3 wherein:
- each of the flutes has a depth, taken in the radial direction, that diminishes progressively in said axial direction away from the first end.
- 8. The hub assembly of claim 3 wherein:
- said means for mounting the disks include a plurality of annular spacing members, said disks and spacing members being stacked in an alternating arrangement on the hub, surrounding the hub, and secured to the hub with respective inner rims of the disks and spacing members being contiguous with radially outward surfaces of the projections.
- 9. A hub assembly for supporting a plurality of data storage disks for rotation within a disk drive housing, including:
- a hub rotatable about a spindle axis and having a plurality of radially outward projections arranged substantially symmetrically about the hub whereby radially outward surfaces of the projections define the periphery of the hub, said projections being elongate in the axial direction and angularly spaced apart from one another to define a plurality of radially inward flutes elongate in the axial direction, one of the flutes being disposed between each pair of adjacent projections, each of the flutes converging in the axial direction away form one end of the hub;
- a plurality of data storage disks and a plurality of annular disk spacing members, said disks and spacing members being stacked in an alternating arrangement on the hub, surrounding the hub, and secured with respect to the hub; and
- a plurality of openings through each of the spacing members and disposed along the flutes, for permitting the passage of air from the flutes, radially outward of each spacing member into an adjacent space between a pair of disks adjacent to the spacing member.
- 10. The hub assembly of claim 9 wherein:
- respective inner rims of the disks and spacing members are contiguous with the radially outward surfaces of the projections.
- 11. The hub assembly of claim 9 wherein:
- said projections diverge in said axial direction away from said one end of the hub.
- 12. The hub assembly of claim 9 wherein:
- each of the flutes becomes progressively narrower in said axial direction away from said one end of the hub.
- 13. The hub assembly of claim 12 wherein:
- each of the flutes further has a depth that diminishes in said axial direction away from said one end of the hub.
- 14. The hub assembly of claim 9 wherein:
- each of the flutes has a depth taken in the radial direction, and the depth of each flute progressively decreases in said axial direction away from said one end of the hub.
