Claims
- 1. A data storage system comprising:
- a base unit having a receptacle, the receptacle having a first plurality of conductors fixedly secured at an end thereof and at least one mating surface;
- a removable module insertable into the receptacle, the removable module having a second plurality of conductors fixedly secured at an end thereof, a data storage medium operatively coupled to the second plurality of conductors, and at least one mating surface, the second plurality of conductors of said removable module being engageable in mating relation to the first plurality of conductors of the receptacle of said base unit in response to a manual loading force for moving said removable module into a final assembled position in the receptacle wherein all required electrical transmission paths between the base unit and the data storage medium are completed and wherein the at least one mating surface of the removable module abuts the at least one mating surface of the receptacle to form a mechanical stop, thereby assisting to prevent further insertion of the removable module into the receptacle of the base unit.
- 2. The data storage system of claim 1 further comprising a releasable locking mechanism for locking the removable module in the final assembled position.
- 3. The data storage system of claim 1 further comprising a sensor for sensing that the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 4. The data storage system of claim 3 further comprising a visual indicator responsive to the sensor for indicating to a user that the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 5. The data storage system of claim 1 further comprising a sensor for sensing that the removable module has been selected for operation.
- 6. The data storage system of claim 5 farther comprising a visual indicator responsive to the sensor for indicating to a user that the removable module has been selected for operation.
- 7. The data storage system of claim 1 further comprising a visual indicator for indicating to a user that the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 8. The data storage system of claim 1 farther comprising a visual indicator for indicating to a user that the removable module is operating.
- 9. The data storage system of claim 1 wherein the removable module has a plate defining a front wall of the removable module and wherein the at least one mating surface of the removable module comprises at least one portion of the plate.
- 10. The data storage system of claim 1 further comprising a ground contact located in the receptacle of the base unit, and wherein the ground contact engages the removable module during its insertion into the receptacle to remove static charge from the removable module before the first and second plurality of conductors become engaged in mating relation.
- 11. The data storage system of claim 1 further comprising at least one guide shelf located in the base unit and aligned in a direction substantially perpendicular to the end of the receptacle, the at least one guide shelf defined by at least one support surface and at least one side surface, and wherein the removable module has at least one bottom contact surface and at least one side contact surface, such that, upon insertion of the removable module into the receptacle, at least a portion of the at least one support surface of the at least one guide shelf contacts at least a portion of the at least one bottom contact surface of the removable module and at least a portion of the at least one side surface of the at least one guide shelf contacts at least a portion of the at least one side contact surface of the removable module to assist in aligning the first and second plurality of conductors and guiding the removable module into the receptacle to the final assembled position.
- 12. A data storage system comprising:
- a base unit having a receptacle, the receptacle having a first plurality of conductors fixed at an end thereof and at least one guide shelf, the at least one guide shelf aligned in a direction substantially perpendicular to the end of the receptacle and defined by at least one support surface and at least one side surface;
- a removable module for detachable coupling with the base unit, the removable module having a second plurality of conductors at an end thereof, a data storage medium operatively coupled to the second plurality of conductors, at least one bottom contact surface and at least one side contact surface, said receptacle receiving said removable module in response to a manual loading force such that at least a portion of the at least one support surface of the at least one guide shelf contacts at least a portion of the at least one bottom contact surface of the removable module and at least a portion of the at least one side surface of the at least one guide shelf contacts at least a portion of the at least one side contact surface of the removable module to assist in aligning the first and second plurality of conductors and guiding the removable module into the receptacle to a final assembled position wherein the first and second plurality of conductors matingly engage to complete all required electrical transmission paths between the base unit and the data storage medium.
- 13. The data storage system of claim 12 further comprising a releasable locking mechanism for locking the removable module in the final assembled position.
- 14. The data storage system of claim 12 further comprising a sensor for sensing that the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 15. The data storage system of claim 14 further comprising a visual indicator responsive to the sensor for indicating to a user that the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 16. The data storage system of claim 12 further comprising a sensor for sensing that the removable module has been selected for operation.
- 17. The data storage system of claim 16 further comprising a visual indicator responsive to the sensor for indicating to a user that the removable module has been selected for operation.
- 18. The data storage system of claim 12 further comprising a visual indicator for indicating to a user that the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 19. The data storage system of claim 12 further comprising a visual indicator for indicating to a user that the removable module is operating.
- 20. The data storage system of claim 12 further comprising a ground contact located in the receptacle of the base unit, and wherein the ground contact engages the removable module during its insertion into the receptacle to remove static charge from the removable module before the first and second plurality of conductors matingly engage.
- 21. The data storage system of claim 12 wherein the receptacle has at least one mating surface and the removable module has at least one mating surface, and wherein the at least one mating surface of the removable module abuts the at least one mating surface of the receptacle to form a mechanical stop when the removable module is in the final assembled position.
- 22. The data storage system of claim 21 wherein the removable module has a plate defining a front wall of the removable module and wherein the at least one mating surface of the removable module comprises at least one portion of the plate.
- 23. A data storage system comprising:
- a base unit having a receptacle, the receptacle having a first plurality of conductors fixedly secured at an end thereof;
- a removable module insertable into the receptacle, the removable module having a second plurality of conductors fixedly secured at an end thereof and a data storage medium operatively coupled to the second plurality of conductors, the second plurality of conductors of said removable module being engageable in mating relation to the first plurality of conductors of the receptacle of said base unit in response to a manual loading force for moving said removable module into a final assembled position in the receptacle wherein all required electrical transmission paths between the base unit and the data storage medium are completed; and
