Claims
- 1. A disk storage device, comprising:
- a clean chamber isolated by a partition;
- a storage disk having a central opening with a first diameter, the storage disk being in the clean chamber; and
- a brushless DC drive motor, including:
- a stator including a lamination disposed about a motor axis and a winding on the lamination;
- a bearing and shaft assembly connected to said stator and including a shaft aligned on the motor axis and bearings affixed to the shaft; and
- a rotor supported on said bearing and shaft assembly to rotate about the motor axis, said rotor having a body portion, an inner surface, and a magnet affixed to the inner surface of the rotor and coaxially surrounding the lamination, the magnet being spaced from the star or by a substantially cylindrical air gap having a second diameter greater than the first diameter, said rotor body portion being configured as a hub to support said storage disk for rotation in said clean chamber.
- 2. The disk storage device according to claim 1 wherein said disk storage device further includes a flange connected to the partition of the clean chamber, a portion of said rotor has a circular edge, and said flange has a substantially cylindrical surface located in proximity to the circular edge of the rotor.
- 3. The disk storage device according to claim 1, wherein:
- the rotor has a central cavity opening toward the stator and having a diameter which is less than the first diameter of the storage disk opening, and
- a bearing of said bearing and shaft assembly is located at least partly in the central cavity.
- 4. The disk storage device according to claim 1, wherein:
- the rotor provides a portion of a magnetic return path for the magnet of the rotor.
- 5. The disk storage device according to claim 1, wherein:
- the rotor includes a cylindrical section of soft magnetic material for providing a portion of a magnetic return path for the magnet of the rotor.
- 6. The disk storage device according to claim 1, wherein:
- the rotor body portion configured as a hub includes a cylindrical surface for providing approximate alignment of the central opening of the disk with the rotation axis of the rotor.
- 7. A disk storage device, comprising in combination:
- a clean chamber isolated by a partition;
- at least one data storage disk provided in said clean chamber and having a central opening with a first diameter;
- a motor for rotating said data storage disk about an axis;
- a support member connected to the clean chamber partition for supporting said motor within said clean chamber;
- said motor including a stator, having windings, mounted on said support member concentric with said disk rotation axis, a shaft positioned by said support member in alignment with said disk rotation axis, bearings surrounding said shaft, and a rotor rotatable via said bearings about said disk rotation axis, said rotor having a hub member extending through the central opening of said data storage disk with a disk support shoulder extending radially therefrom, said rotor further having a circular recess opening toward one axial end of said rotor, said recess housing an annular magnet positioned to surround said stator, said magnet having an outer diameter greater than said first diameter, said rotor having a radially extending inner wall spaced closely adjacent to said stator windings, whereby said disk storage device is compact in a direction along said disk rotation axis while said motor magnet is axially separated from the plane of said storage disk.
- 8. The disk storage device according to claim 7, wherein said rotor has a circular edge at said one axial end and said support member has a substantially cylindrical surface located in proximity to the circular edge of said rotor.
- 9. The disk storage device according to claim 7, wherein the rotor provides a portion of a magnetic return path for the magnet of the rotor.
- 10. The disk storage device according to claim 7, wherein the rotor includes a cylindrical section of magnetic material for providing a portion of a magnetic return path for the magnet of the rotor.
- 11. The disk storage device according to claim 7, wherein the rotor hub member includes a cylindrical surface for providing approximate alignment of the central opening of the disk with the disk rotation axis.
