Claims
- 1. An apparatus for dispensing sheets one by one from the top of a pile of sheets comprising:
- rockably supported sheet gripping means having means at its lower end for gripping a sheet contacted thereby,
- means for moving said sheet gripping means between a delivery position spaced from said sheet pile and a gripping position contacting the top sheet adjacent one margin thereof,
- fixed abutment means located adjacent said gripping position, said sheet gripping means having a rigid projection extending laterally from the lower end thereof for engaging said abutment means at the free end thereof,
- means for imparting a limited lateral movement away from said sheet margin to the upper part of said sheet gripping means while the latter is in said sheet gripping position and said projection engages said abutment means, whereby said gripping means is caused to rock about the point of contact of said projection and said abutment means to thereby flex the margin of said top sheet away from the underlying sheet and facilitate separation of the top sheet from said stack when the gripping means moves to said delivery position, and
- sheet feeding means for receiving the sheet from said gripping means when the latter is in said delivery position.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said projection is arcuately curved in a direction upwardly and toward said gripping means whereby the point of contact between said projection and said abutment means about which said gripping means rocks moves consecutively upwards along said curvature during the rocking movement.
- 3. Method for removing the uppermost sheet of a substantially horizontally disposed pile of sheets by means of a pivotally supported suction device having an upper and lower end with a suction opening at its lower end, which comprises the steps of:
- bringing the suction opening of said suction-device into contact with the upper sheet surface along the end margin adjacent one end edge of the sheet to be removed,
- applying vacuum to said suction opening,
- moving the upper end of said suction device in a generally horizontal direction toward the opposite end of the sheet while restraining the lower end of said suction device against such horizontal movement to cause said device to rock bodily about its pivotal support and thereby flex the gripped end margin of said sheet upwardly away from the underlying sheet, and
- lifting said suction device to a given height above the sheet pile while the sheet end margin remains gripped by said suction opening.
