Claims
- 1. A dispensing valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening therein, comprising:a marginal valve portion shaped to seal about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion, having an orifice which opens and closes to control fluid flow, and being shaped to shift generally centrally in an axial direction with respect to said marginal valve portion; and a connector sleeve portion, having one marginal end area thereof connected with said marginal valve portion, an opposite end area thereof connected with said valve head portion, and a resiliently flexible construction that stretches in an axial direction to apply radially inwardly directed forces to said valve head portion which assist in securely retaining said orifice fully closed as said valve head shifts axially prior to dispensing.
- 2. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion is shaped such that when said orifice shifts from a fully closed condition to a fully open condition, said valve head portion dilates to generate radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion which assist in retaining said orifice in said fully closed condition until said orifice shifts to said fully open condition.
- 3. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 2, wherein:said one marginal end area of said connector sleeve portion is stretched radially outwardly when said orifice shifts from said fully closed condition to said fully open condition to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion which assist in retaining said orifice in said fully closed condition until said orifice shifts to said fully open condition.
- 4. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 3, wherein:said valve head portion is shaped such that said radially inwardly directed forces generated therein also assist in retaining said orifice in said fully open condition during dispensing.
- 5. A dispensing valve as set fort in claim 4, wherein:said dispensing valve is configured such that said orifice shifts from said fully closed condition to said fully open condition in response to a predetermined threshold pressure in an interior portion of the container; said dispensing valve is configured such that said orifice is retained in said fully open condition in response to a predetermined dispense pressure in the interior portion of the container; and said dispense pressure is less than said threshold pressure to facilitate easy and accurate dispensing of the fluid product from the container.
- 6. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 5, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a longitudinally resilient flexible construction which is stretched longitudinally when said orifice shifts from said fully closed position to said fully open position to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion.
- 7. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 6, wherein:said valve head portion has a generally circular plan shape.
- 8. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 7, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a generally circular lateral cross-sectional shape.
- 9. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 8, wherein:said valve head portion has an interior surface which interfaces with the fluid product in the container, and an exterior surface which interfaces with ambient environment; said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is in said fully closed condition, said exterior surface thereof assumes a generally concave orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 10. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 9, wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is in said fully open condition, said exterior surface thereof assumes a generally convex orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 11. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said connector sleeve portion is elastically deformed during dispensing of the liquid product from the container, such that before said orifice shifts to said fully closed condition, said one marginal end area of said connector sleeve portion assumes a tapered configuration wherein opposite sidewalls of said connector sleeve portion are disposed closer together at a location adjacent said valve head portion than a location spaced apart from said valve head portion.
- 12. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 11, wherein:said interior and exterior surfaces of said valve head portion taper inwardly toward one another adjacent said orifice.
- 13. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 12, wherein:said interior surface of said valve head portion has a generally arcuate shape.
- 14. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 13, wherein:said exterior surface of said valve head portion has a generally arcuate shape.
- 15. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 14, wherein:each of said sidewalls of said connector sleeve has a generally J-shaped longitudinal cross-sectional configuration.
- 16. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said one marginal end area of said connector sleeve portion is stretched radially outwardly when said orifice shifts from a fully closed condition to a fully open condition to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion.
- 17. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion is shaped such that said radially inwardly directed forces generated therein also assist in retaining said orifice in a fully open condition during dispensing.
- 18. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said dispensing valve is configured such that said orifice shifts from a fully closed condition to a fully open condition in response to a predetermined threshold pressure in an interior portion of the container; said dispensing valve is configured such that said orifice is retained in said fully open condition in response to a predetermined dispense pressure in the interior portion of the container; and said predetermined dispense pressure is less than said threshold pressure to facilitate easy and accurate dispensing of the fluid product from the container.
- 19. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a longitudinally resiliently flexible construction which is stretched longitudinally when said orifice shifts from a fully closed position to a fully open position.
- 20. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion has a generally circular plan shape.
- 21. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a generally circular lateral cross-sectional shape.
- 22. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion has an interior surface which interfaces with the fluid product in the container, and an exterior surface which interfaces with ambient environment; said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is in a fully closed condition, said exterior surface thereof assumes a generally concave orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 23. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is in a fully open condition, said exterior surface thereof assumes a generally convex orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 24. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve portion is elastically deformed during dispensing of the liquid product from the container, such that before said orifice shifts to a fully closed condition, said one marginal end area of said connector sleeve portion assumes a tapered configuration wherein opposite sidewalls of said connector sleeve portion are disposed closer together at a location adjacent said valve head portion than a location spaced apart from said valve head portion.
- 25. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion has interior and exterior surfaces that taper inwardly toward one another adjacent said orifice.
- 26. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion has an interior surface that is generally arcuate in shape.
- 27. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion has an exterior surface that is generally arcuate in shape.
- 28. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has sidewalls with a generally J-shaped longitudinal cross-sectional configuration.
- 29. A dispensing valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening therein, comprising:a marginal valve portion shaped to seal about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion, having an orifice which opens and closes to control fluid flow, and being shaped to shift generally centrally in an axial direction with respect to said marginal valve portion; and a connector sleeve portion, having one marginal end area thereof connected with said marginal valve portion, an opposite end area thereof connected with said valve head portion, and a resiliently flexible construction that stretches in an axial direction to apply radially inwardly directed forces to said valve head portion which assist in retaining said orifice fully open during dispensing.
- 30. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 29, wherein:said valve head portion is shaped such that when said orifice shifts from a fully closed condition to a fully open condition, said valve head portion dilates to generate radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion which assist in retaining said orifice in said fully open condition.
- 31. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 29, wherein:said one marginal end area of said connector sleeve portion is stretched radially outwardly when said orifice shifts from a fully closed condition to a fully open condition to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion.
- 32. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 29, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a longitudinally resiliently flexible construction which is stretched longitudinally when said orifice shifts from a fully closed position to a fully open position to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion.
- 33. A dispensing valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening therein, comprising:a marginal portion shaped to seal about the discharge opening of the container, a head portion with an orifice therein which shifts between an open position to permit fluid flow therethrough in response to a predetermined discharge pressure within the container and a closed position to shut off fluid flow therethrough upon removal of the predetermined discharge pressure, wherein said head portion has an exterior surface interfacing with ambient environment having a generally concave shape when said orifice is in said closed position, and a generally convex shape when said orifice is in said open position, as viewed from outside the container, and a connector sleeve portion having a resiliently flexible construction with a first end area thereof connected with said marginal portion, an opposite second end area thereof connected with said head portion, and an intermediate area disposed between said first and second end areas; said first end area being disposed radially outwardly of said second end area, and said intermediate area being flared radially outwardly between said head portion and said marginal portion to facilitate shifting said orifice between said open position and said closed position.
- 34. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 33, wherein:said head portion has an interior surface interfacing with fluid product in the container, and said interior surface has a portion with a generally arcuate shape.
- 35. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 34, wherein:said interior surface of said head portion has a generally convex shape when said orifice is in said closed position, as viewed from inside of the container.
- 36. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 35, wherein:said connector sleeve includes at least a portion thereof having a generally J-shaped longitudinal cross-sectional configuration.
- 37. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 36, wherein:said orifice is defined by at least two intersecting slits.
- 38. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 37, wherein:said slits are oriented in a mutually perpendicular relationship.
- 39. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 38, wherein:said connector sleeve is constructed to stretch in an axial direction to apply radially inwardly directed forces to said head portion which assist in securely retaining said orifice in said fully closed position prior to dispensing.
- 40. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 39, wherein:said head portion has a generally circular plan shape.
- 41. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said head portion shifts relative to said marginal portion in an axially outward direction when the predetermined discharge pressure develops in the container.
- 42. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 41, wherein:said connector sleeve is shaped to halt the axially outward shifting of said head portion prior to dispensing.
- 43. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 42, wherein:said dispensing valve has a one-piece, integrally molded construction.
- 44. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 43, wherein:said dispensing valve is molded from liquid silicone rubber.
- 45. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 44, wherein:said valve head has a tapered construction with reduced thickness adjoining said orifice.
- 46. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 45, wherein:said exterior surface of said valve head has an arcuate portion defined by a first radius; and said arcuate portion of the interior surface of said valve head is defined by a second radius which is greater than said first radius.
- 47. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 46, wherein:said intermediate area of said connector sleeve portion flares radially outwardly along a generally arcuately shaped portion.
- 48. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 47, wherein:said interior and exterior surfaces of said head portion are configured such that when said orifice shifts from a fully closed position to a fully open position, said exterior surface tends to flatten, and said head portion is thereby compressed inwardly by said connector sleeve portion in a fashion which causes said orifice to quickly and positively open and close for improved control of the fluid flow therethrough.
