Claims
- 1. A dispensing valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening therein, comprising:a marginal valve portion shaped to seal about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion having a marginal edge, interior and exterior sides, and an orifice extending therebetween which is at least initially closed to preclude fluid flow therethrough and opens to permit fluid flow therethrough in response to a predetermined discharge pressure differential applied across said valve head portion; a connector sleeve having a resiliently flexible construction, with one end thereof connected with said marginal valve portion, and an opposite end thereof connected with the marginal edge of said valve head portion, whereby when the pressure differential across said valve head portion is greater than the predetermined discharge pressure differential, said valve head portion shifts outwardly in a manner which causes said connector sleeve to double over and extend rollingly, and thereby apply a torque to said valve head portion which assists in opening said orifice; and wherein said exterior side of the valve head portion includes a curved portion configured to assume a generally concave orientation when said orifice is closed, and a generally convex orientation when said orifice is open, such that inward compression and torque applied to said valve head portion by said connector sleeve combine to resiliently maintain said orifice open, whereby the minimum pressure differential across said valve head portion required to maintain fluid flow through said orifice is substantially less than said predetermined discharge pressure differential, so as to provide greater ease of dispensing and flow control.
- 2. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said orifice closes to shut off fluid flow therethrough when the pressure differential across said valve head portion is reduced below the minimum pressure differential required to maintain fluid flow through said orifice.
- 3. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said predetermined discharge pressure differential is established by increasing the pressure within the container as compared to the pressure at the exterior of the valve head portion.
- 4. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve has said opposite end thereof connected with said valve head portion adjacent the exterior side thereof for improved torque assist in opening said orifice.
- 5. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve is configured to permit said valve head portion to shift between a fully extended position wherein said orifice is located exterior of the container to facilitate neatly dispensing the fluid product, and a fully retracted position wherein said orifice is located interior of the container to facilitate safe, leak-resistant storage.
- 6. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion interior side has a arcuate marginal portion which is shaped generally convex when said valve head portion is in a fully retracted position.
- 7. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion interior side has a generally flat center portion in which said orifice is positioned.
- 8. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said connector sleeve comprises a substantially imperforate rolling diaphragm having a generally cylindrically shaped side wall portion, and a radially outwardly extending base portion.
- 9. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 1, wherein:said valve head portion has a circular plan shape; said marginal valve portion has an annular plan shape; and said diaphragm sidewall portion has an exterior surface positioned in-line with the marginal edge of said valve head portion.
- 10. A dispensing valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening, comprising;a marginal valve portion shaped to seal about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion having an orifice which opens to permit fluid flow therethrough in response to a predetermined discharge pressure differential applied across said valve head portion, wherein said valve head portion is shaped for shifting generally centrally with respect to said marginal valve portion; a connector sleeve portion having a resiliently flexible construction, with one end area thereof connected with said marginal valve portion and an opposite end area thereof connected with said valve head portion; and wherein said connector sleeve portion has a configuration which applies an outwardly directed torque to said valve head portion when the pressure differential across valve head portion is above said predetermined discharge pressure differential to assist in opening said orifice.
- 11. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:upon reduction of he pressure differential across said valve head portion below a minimum pressure differential required to maintain fluid flow through said orifice, an inwardly directed torque is applied to said valve head portion to assist in closing said orifice to shut off fluid flow therethrough.
- 12. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said predetermined discharge pressure differential is established by increasing the pressure in the container as compared to the pressure at the exterior of the valve head portion.
- 13. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a sidewall shaped to double over and extend and retract rollingly.
- 14. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said valve head portion is generally disc-shaped.
- 15. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said valve head portion includes a marginal area thereof adjacent which the other end area of said connector sleeve portion is connected.
- 16. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said connector sleeve portion flares outwardly from said valve head portion adjacent said marginal valve portion.
- 17. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a generally J-shaped longitudinal cross-sectional shape.
- 18. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is closed, an exterior surface thereof assumes a generally concave orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 19. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 10, wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is closed, an interior surface thereof assumes a generally convex orientation as viewed from inside the container.
- 20. A discharge valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening therein, comprising;a marginal valve portion for sealing about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion including a central area with an orifice which is at least initially closed to preclude fluid flow therethrough and opens to permit fluid flow therethrough in response to a predetermined discharge pressure differential applied across the valve head portion; and wherein said valve head portion having an exterior surface which interfaces with the environment and at least at outer portions thereof an inwardly curving arcuate side elevational shape defined by a first radius, and an interior surface which interfaces with a fluid product in the container and has at least at outer portions thereof an inwardly curving arcuate side elevational shape defined by a second radius, which is greater than said first radius, such that said exterior and interior surfaces converge toward said central area of said valve head portion to provide a tapered construction with reduced thickness adjoining said orifice.
- 21. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 20, wherein:said interior surface of said valve head portion includes a flat portion disposed radially inwardly of said arcuate outer portions, at said central area, and said orifice extends through the flat portion of said central area.
- 22. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 21, wherein;said exterior surface of said valve head portion is continuously arcuate at said central area, and said orifice extends through a central portion of said exterior surface.
- 23. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 21, wherein:said valve head portion has a circular plan shape.
- 24. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 21, wherein:said valve head portion has an outer marginal edge with a generally annular shape.
- 25. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 21 wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is closed, the exterior surface of said valve head portion assumes a generally concave orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 26. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 21, wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is closed, the interior surface of said valve head portion assumes a generally convex orientation as viewed from inside the container.
- 27. A dispensing valve as set froth in claim 21, wherein:said orifice includes at least two slits oriented in a mutually intersecting relationship.
- 28. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 20, wherein:said orifice closes to shut off fluid flow therethrough when the pressure differential across said valve head portion is reduced below a minimum pressure differential required to maintain fluid flow through said orifice.
- 29. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 20, wherein:said predetermined discharge pressure differential is established by increasing the pressure in the container as compared to the pressure at the exterior of the valve head portion.
- 30. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 20, including:a connector sleeve portion disposed intermediate said valve head portion and said marginal portion of said valve.
- 31. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 30, wherein:said interior and exterior surfaces of said valve head portion are configured such that when said orifice shifts from a fully closed position to a fully open position, said curved exterior surface tends to flatten, and said head portion is thereby compressed inwardly by said connector sleeve portion in a fashion which causes said orifice to quickly and positively open and close for improved control of fluid flow therethrough.
- 32. A dispensing valve for fluid packaging of the type having a container and a discharge opening therein, comprising:a marginal valve portion sealing about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion including a central area with an orifice which at least is initially closed to preclude fluid flow therethrough and opens to permit fluid flow therethrough in response to a predetermined discharge pressure differential applied across said valve head portion; and a resiliently flexible connector sleeve having a first end portion thereof connected with said marginal portion, and a second end portion thereof connected with said valve head portion, said second end portion of said connector sleeve having an inverted J-shape which extends arcuately into said valve head portion to facilitate movement of said valve head portion when dispensing product from the container.
- 33. A dispensing valve as set froth in claim 32, wherein:said orifice closes to shut off fluid flow therethrough when the pressure differential across said valve head portion is reduced below a minimum pressure differential required to maintain fluid flow through said orifice.
- 34. A dispensing valve as set fourth in claim 32, wherein:said predetermined discharge pressure differential is established by increasing the pressure in the container as compared to the pressure at the exterior of the valve head portion.
- 35. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 32, wherein:said head valve portion has an exterior surface which interfaces with ambient environment and has a generally concave shape when viewed from outside the container.
- 36. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 35, wherein:said valve head portion has an interior surface which interfaces with the fluid product in the container and has a center area and a generally inclined outer portion which tapes inwardly toward said center area, such that said exterior and interior surfaces converge toward the central area of said head portion to provide a tapered construction with reduced thickness adjoining said orifice.
- 37. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 32, wherein:said valve head portion has an outer edge disposed generally parallel with and spaced radially inwardly from an adjacent upper portion of said connector sleeve.
- 38. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 32, wherein:said connector sleeve has a generally linear medial portion disposed between said first and second end portions.
- 39. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 38, wherein:said medial and first end portions of said head portion collectively from a J-shape.
- 40. A dispensing valve for fluid product packaging of the type having a container with a discharge opening therein, comprising:a marginal valve portion shaped to seal about the discharge opening of the container; a valve head portion, having an exterior surface which interfaces with ambient environment and an interior surface which interfaces with the fluid product in the container; said valve head portion including an orifice which extends between said interior surface and said exterior surface, and shifts from at least an initially closed position to an open position in response to a predetermined discharge pressure differential applied across said valve head portion to permit fluid flow therethrough; said exterior surface of said valve head portion having a generally concave shape as viewed from outside the container when said orifice is in its closed position; and a connector sleeve portion, having a first end area thereof connected with said marginal valve portion, an opposite second end area thereof connected with said valve head portion, and a flexible intermediate area disposed between said first and second end areas which permits said valve head portion to shift axially outwardly upon application of a pressure differential across said valve head portion that is less than said predetermined discharge pressure differential while maintaining said orifice in said generally concave shape and fully closed position prior to dispensing.
- 41. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said orifice closes to shut off fluid flow therethrough when the pressure differential across said valve head portion is reduced below a minimum pressure differential required to maintain fluid flow through said orifice.
- 42. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said predetermined discharge pressure differential is established by increasing the pressure in the container as compared to the pressure at the exterior of the valve head portion.
- 43. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said first end area of said connector sleeve portion is stretched radially outwardly when said orifice shifts from a fully closed condition to a fully open condition to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion which assist in retaining said orifice in said fully closed condition until said orifice shifts to said fully open condition.
- 44. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 43, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a longitudinally resilient flexible construction which is stretched longitudinally when said orifice shifts from said fully closed position to said fully open position to generate at least a portion of said radially inwardly directed forces in said valve head portion.
- 45. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 43, wherein:said valve head portion has a generally circular plan shape.
- 46. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 45, wherein:said connector sleeve portion has a generally circular lateral cross-sectional shape.
- 47. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 43, wherein:said valve head portion has an interior surface which interfaces with the fluid product in the container, and an exterior surface which interfaces with ambient environment; said valve had portion is configured such that when said orifice is in said fully closed condition, said exterior surface thereof assumes a generally concave orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 48. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 47, wherein:said valve head portion is configured such that when said orifice is in said fully open condition, said exterior surface thereof assumes a generally convex orientation as viewed from outside the container.
- 49. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said interior and exterior surfaces of said valve head portion taper inwardly toward one another adjacent said orifice.
- 50. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said interior surface of said valve head portion has a generally arcuate shape.
- 51. A dispensing valve as set forth in claim 40, wherein:said exterior surface of said valve head portion has a generally arcuate shape.
