This application is based on and claims priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119 to Korean Patent Application Nos. 10-2023-0039137, filed on Mar. 24, 2023 and 10-2023-0061351 filed on May 11, 2023 in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the disclosures of which are incorporated by reference herein in their entireties.
The disclosure relates to a display device having a perpendicular electrode structure and a method of manufacturing the display device.
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diode displays (OLEDs) have been widely used as display devices. Recently, there has been an increase in the adoption of micro light-emitting devices for manufacturing high-resolution display devices. Due to the low power-consuming and eco-friendly properties of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the industrial demand therefor has been growing, and the LEDs have been employed not only in lighting systems or liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights, but also in display devices. In manufacturing a display device using a micro-semiconductor chip, a pick and place method has been widely used to transfer micro-semiconductor chips. However, with the continued reduction in the size of micro-semiconductor chips and the expansion in the size of display devices increases, such a method may now face challenges that could lead to decreased productivity.
In regard to a display device including a micro-semiconductor chip, diverse technologies, such as a transfer technology to transfer a micro-sized light-emitting device to a desired display pixel position, a repair process, and a method of implementing a desired color may be required.
One or more example embodiments provide a display device having a perpendicular electrode structure.
Further, one or more example embodiments provide a method of manufacturing a display device having a perpendicular electrode structure.

A display device 100 may include a display substrate 110 including wiring 112 therein, a first pad 120 provided on the display substrate 110, a second pad 125 provided on the display substrate 110 and spaced apart from the first pad 120, and a micro-semiconductor chip 130 electrically connected to the first pad 120 and the second pad 125. The term “pad,” which is also referred to as a contact pad, may be a metallic area that serves as connection points for electronic connections. The first pad 120 may include a plurality of pads, wherein each of the pads is designated for a specific micro-semiconductor chip among a plurality of semiconductor chips, and the plurality of semiconductor chips share a common pad (e.g., the second pad 125). For example, the first pad 120 may include a pair of P-type contact pads (e.g., a 1-1 pad 121 and a 1-2 pad 122) for providing electrical connection to two micro-semiconductor chips, and a common N-type contact pad (e.g., the second pad 125) is positioned between the P-type contact pads to serve the two micro-semiconductor chips.
The display substrate 110 may include a drive device 115 driving the micro-semiconductor chip 130, and the drive device 115 may include at least one capacitor and at least one transistor. The drive device 115 may be electrically connected to the micro-semiconductor chip 130 through the wiring 112.
The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may include various types of micro-semiconductor chips having a micro size, and the micro size may be less than or equal to 1000 μm or 200 μm. The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may include, for example, a light-emitting diode (LED), a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS), a CMOS image sensor (CIS), a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), a photo diode (PD), a memory device, a two-dimensional (2D) material device, etc. The 2D material may be graphene or carbon nano tube (CNT).
The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may include a first electrode 131, a first type semiconductor layer 132 provided on the first electrode 131, an active layer 133 provided on the first type semiconductor layer 132, and a second type semiconductor layer 134 provided on the active layer 133. A second electrode 135 may be provided on the second type semiconductor layer 134.
The first type semiconductor layer 132 may be a p-type semiconductor layer. The first type semiconductor layer 132 may include III-V group p-type semiconductors, for example, p-GaN. The first type semiconductor layer 132 may have a single layer structure or a multi-layer structure.
The active layer 133 may be provided on the first type semiconductor layer 132. When an electron and a hole are coupled, the active layer 133 may generate light. The active layer 133 may have a multi-quantum well (MQW) structure, or a single-quantum well (SQW) structure. The active layer 133 may include III-V group semiconductors, for example, GaN.
The second type semiconductor layer 134 may be provided on an upper surface of the active layer 133. The second type semiconductor layer 134 may be, for example, an n-type semiconductor layer. The second type semiconductor layer 134 may include III-V group n-type semiconductors, for example, n-GaN. The second type semiconductor layer 134 may have a single layer structure or a multi-layer structure. Alternatively, when the first type semiconductor layer 132 is an n-type semiconductor layer, the second type semiconductor layer 134 may be a p-type semiconductor layer.
The first electrode 131 may be connected to the first pad 120, and the second electrode 135 may be connected to the second pad 125. The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may have a perpendicular electrode structure in which the first electrode 131 is provided on one surface, and the second electrode 135 is provided on a surface facing the surface on which the first electrode 131 is provided. The first pad 120 may be arranged to at least partially overlap the first electrode 131 to be in contact with the first electrode 131. The first pad 120 may be connected to the first electrode 131 when the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is provided, and may be arranged not to be not in contact with the second electrode 135 at a position where the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted. That is, at a position where the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted, the second electrode 135 may not be in contact with the first pad 120. For example, the first pad 120 may be arranged not to overlap the second electrode 135 or have a shape not to overlap the second electrode 135. Here, when the first pad 120 does not overlap the second electrode 135, it signifies that when the second electrode 135 is projected onto the display substrate 110, there is no physical and electric contact between the first pad 120 and the second electrode 135. This configuration is implemented to ensure that the second electrode 135 remains separate from the first pad 120, particularly in cases where the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted. That is, by arranging the first pad 120 in a manner that avoids overlap with the second electrode 135, unintentional connection and short-circuiting between the second electrode 135 and the first pad 120 may be prevented when the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted.
In another embodiment, at a position where the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted, when the second electrode 135 extends to a place where the micro-semiconductor chip 130 would normally be placed (but is currently missing), an extension 135a of the second electrode 135 may be positioned so as not to make contact with the first pad 120.

When the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted, in the display device 100A, the first pad 120 may be provided not to be placed at a position where the second electrode 135 is connected to the display substrate 110 or may have a shape which has no connection with the second electrode 135. That is, the extension 135a of the second electrode 135 which extends to a position where the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted may be placed not be in contact with the first pad 120. By doing so, the second electrode 135 may be prevented from being connected to the first pad 120 and electrically shorted.
Next, a method of manufacturing a display device according to an embodiment is described.
The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may be transferred to the transfer substrate 210 by using various methods. The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may be transferred by using a dry transfer method such as pick and place method or a wet transfer method using liquid.
The transfer substrate 210 including a plurality of grooves 220 may be provided. The transfer substrate 210 may include a single layer or multi-layers. The grooves 220 may be provided to place the micro-semiconductor chip 130.
Liquid may be provided to the grooves 220. Any kind of liquid that does not corrode or damage the micro-semiconductor chip 130 may be used. The liquid may include, for example, one or more combinations selected from a group consisting of water, ethanol, alcohol, polyol, keton, halocarbon, acetone, flux, and organic solvent. The organic solvent may include, for example, isopropyl alcohol (IPA). The kind of liquid is not limited thereto, and may be changed diversely.
A method of providing liquid to the grooves 220 may include, for example, a spray method, a dispensing method, an inkjet dot method, a method of flowing liquid to the transfer substrate 210, etc. The amount of liquid supply may be adjusted variably to exactly fill or overfill the grooves 220.
A plurality of micro-semiconductor chips 130 may be provided to the transfer substrate 210. The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may be sprayed to the transfer substrate 210 without other liquids, or may be supplied in a suspension. A method of providing the micro-semiconductor chip 130 included in a suspension may include, for example, a spray method, a dispensing method, by which liquid is provided dropwise, an inkjet dot method, by which liquid is discharged like a printing method, a method of flowing the suspension to the transfer substrate 210, etc.
By scanning the transfer substrate 210 by using a wiper 240, the micro-semiconductor chip 130 may be transferred to the grooves 220. The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may be transferred in a manner that the first electrode 131 (see

The display substrate 110 may include the wiring 112 provided therein. The first pad 120 and the second pad 125 may be provided on the display substrate 110. The first pad 120 may be connected to the first electrode 131 of the micro-semiconductor chip 130, and the second pad 125 may be connected to the second electrode 135 of the micro-semiconductor chip 130.

The micro-semiconductor chip 130 may have a perpendicular electrode structure in which the first electrode 131 is provided on one surface, and the second electrode 135 is provided on a surface facing the surface on which the first electrode 131 is provided. When the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is normally connected to the display substrate 110, the first electrode 131 may be connected to the first pad 120, and the second electrode 135 may be connected to the n-type semiconductor layer 134 and the second pad 125 to have a normal electrical connection structure. When the micro-semiconductor chip 130 is omitted, as the first pad 120 is designed in such a manner that the second electrode 135 is not in contact with the first pad 120, the second electrode 135 may be prevented from being connected to the first pad 120 and shorted.
When connecting electrodes by using a perpendicular chip, the first electrode 131 may be directly connected to the first pad 120 of the display substrate 110 through bonding, and the second electrode 135 may be connected after the bonding on the opposite side of the first electrode 131. In this case, due to the absence of a micro-semiconductor chip, an electrical shorting according to the contact between the second electrode 135 and the first pad 120 may occur. In such a case, in an embodiment, by having an electrode structure in which the first pad 120 is not connected to the second electrode 135, the aforementioned shorting issue may be overcome.
As for a method of manufacturing a display deice, in various processes which require a process of moving a plurality of chips to a transfer substrate through a transfer process, to facilitate operations of sub-pixels and minimize a repair process, a redundancy process by which a plurality of semiconductor chips are arranged and transferred in one pixel may be applied. In this case, an electrode needs to be connected to each micro-semiconductor chip, and by avoiding electrode connection in an empty area where the micro-semiconductor chip is omitted, the shorting issue may be overcome without a separate repair process.
