Claims
- 1. A portable computer system adapted to provide an indication of an audio disk track number being played, the portable computer system comprising:
a disk drive; and a portable computer case coupled to the disk drive, the portable computer case comprising:
a top shell for housing a main display screen; a bottom shell coupled to the top shell for housing a keyboard and a processor, the top shell being movable between an open position and a closed position relative to the bottom shell; and an audio disk track number indicator provided on the top surface of the bottom shell for indicating the track number being played in the disk drive.
- 2. The portable computer system of claim 1, wherein the audio disk track number indicator is located on the bottom shell at a location visible to a user whether the portable computer case is in the closed position or the portable computer case is in the open position.
- 3. The portable computer system of claim 1, further comprising a keyboard controller coupled to the status display, the keyboard controller generating control signals for the status display.
- 4. The portable computer system of claim 1, wherein the disk drive is a Compact Disk Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) drive.
- 5. The portable computer system of claim 1, further comprising a status display formed in the top surface of the bottom shell, wherein the audio disk track number indicator is displayed on the status display.
- 6. The portable computer system of claim 5, wherein the status display is a liquid crystal display.
- 7. The portable computer system of claim 5, wherein the status display is configured to display disk track numbers 1-20.
- 8. The portable computer system of claim 7, wherein the status display further comprises:
a first digit area displaying a “1” when the disk track numbers 10-19 are played, else the first digit area displaying a blank; a second digit area to the right of the first digit area, the second digit area displaying a number “1” through “9” when corresponding disk track numbers 1-9 are played, the second digit area displaying a number “0” through “9” when corresponding disk track numbers 10-19 are played, and the second digit area displaying “2” when disk track number 20 is played; a third digit area to the right of the second digit area, the third digit area displaying a “0” when disk track number 20 is played, else the third digit area displaying a blank.
- 9. The portable computer system of claim 5, wherein the audio disk track number indicator provides additional status information during predetermined periods in which the audio disk is not being played.
- 10. The portable computer system of claim 9, wherein the additional status information comprising battery charge status information.
- 11. A portable computer case adapted for visibly providing an audio disk track number indicator to a user, comprising:
a lower shell containing a keyboard and a processor; an upper shell containing a main display screen coupled to the lower shell and movable between an open position and a closed position relative to the lower shell; and an audio disk track number indicator integrated into the lower shell, wherein the upper shell is recessed at an area correspondingly located with the audio disk track number indicator so that the audio disk track number indicator is visible to a user when the upper shell is in the closed position.
- 12. The portable computer case of claim 11, wherein the area located with the audio disk track number indicator comprises a ramp surface of the lower shell.
- 13. A method for indicating an audio disk track number being played by a portable computer system incorporating a disk drive and a status display, the method comprising the steps of:
determining if a disk is present in the disk drive responsive to determining that a disk is present in the disk drive, determining if an audio disk is present in the disk drive; responsive to determining that an audio disk is present in the disk drive, monitoring the disk drive to determine if the audio disk is being played; and responsive to determining that the audio disk is being played, displaying the audio disk track number on the status display.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of monitoring the disk drive comprises periodically polling the audio disk drive for an updated audio disk track number, and wherein the step of displaying the audio disk track number comprises displaying the updated audio disk track number.
- 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the audio disk is a Compact Disk.
- 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the disk drive is a CD-ROM drive.
- 17. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of displaying the audio disk track number on a status display comprises displaying audio disk track numbers 1-20 on the status display screen.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the status display includes a first digit area, a second digit area, and a third digit area, and the step of displaying audio disk track numbers 1-20 on the status display further comprises:
displaying a “1” on the first digit area when the disk track numbers 10-19 are played, else displaying a blank on the first digit area; displaying a number “1” through “9” on the second digit area when corresponding disk track numbers 1-9 are played; displaying a number “0” through “9” on the second digit area when corresponding disk track numbers 10-19 are played; displaying “2” on the second digit area when disk track number 20 is played; and displaying a “0” on the third digit area when disk track number 20 is played, else displaying a blank on the third digit area.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein the status display is a liquid crystal display.
- 20. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of displaying battery gauge status information if an audio disk is not being played as determined in the step of monitoring the disk drive.
