Claims
- 1. A disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; and a first replaceable absorbent core component disposed in capillary liquid communication with the non-removable absorbent core component and having a major surface having a liquid permeable region and a liquid impermeable region.
- 2. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component extends from the crotch region beyond a waist end edge of the first waist region.
- 3. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component has an inner end and comprises an openable insertion pocket having an openable end facing away from the inner end.
- 4. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises an insertion depth indicator adapted to provide an indication when a predetermined depth of insertion of the first replaceable absorbent core component into the chassis is reached.
- 5. The disposable absorbent article of claim 4 wherein the insertion depth indicator comprises a mechanical indicator comprising a mechanical fastener adapted to engage a surface of the chassis when the predetermined position is reached.
- 6. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 comprising an openable chassis pocket formed by the chassis and having a shape, wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component has a shape corresponding to the shape of the openable chassis pocket and allowing the first replaceable absorbent core component to be inserted into the shaped openable chassis pocket in only a predetermined orientation.
- 7. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises a location stabilizer releasably attached to the chassis in a waistband region.
- 8. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable core component has an inner end, an outer end, and a generally planar body divided longitudinally into successive first, second, third, and fourth segments defined by respective quarters of its length, the first segment including the inner end and having an area less than an area of any one of the second, third, and fourth segments, and the fourth segment including the outer end and having an area less than at least one of the second segment and the third segment.
- 9. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component has an outer end shaped to form an integral pull tab for removal of the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article.
- 10. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises a multi-piece absorbent structure.
- 11. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the non-removable absorbent core component comprises a first absorbent layer extending from the first waist region into and ending in the crotch region and a second absorbent layer extending from the second waist region into and ending in the crotch region.
- 12. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the chassis comprises a first extensible waistband and a second extensible waistband disposed in a layered configuration with the first extensible waistband.
- 13. The disposable absorbent article of claim 12 wherein the chassis has a wearer-facing layer and a garment-facing layer and the first extensible waistband is attached to the wearer-facing layer and the second extensible waistband is attached to the garment-facing layer.
- 14. The disposable absorbent article of claim 13 wherein the first extensible waistband and the second extensible waistband are separable for access into an openable chassis pocket formed by and between the wearer-facing layer and the garment-facing layer.
- 15. The disposable absorbent article of claim 14 wherein a portion of the first extensible waistband is unattached to the wearer-facing layer.
- 16. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the chassis comprises a first extensible waistband disposed in the first waist region and a second extensible waistband disposed in the first waist region relatively nearer the crotch region than the first extensible waistband.
- 17. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the chassis comprises an extensible waistband disposed in the first waist region and including a first portion and a second portion independently extensible from the first portion disposed relatively nearer the crotch region than the first portion.
- 18. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the chassis comprises a topsheet and a backsheet forming an openable chassis pocket having an openable end disposed in the first waist region, an extensible waistband attached to the topsheet adjacent to the openable end, and an extensible portion of the backsheet adjacent to the openable end.
- 19. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the chassis comprises a topsheet and a backsheet forming an openable chassis pocket adapted to receive the first replaceable absorbent core component and the first replaceable absorbent core component is removably disposed inside the openable chassis pocket.
- 20. The disposable absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the chassis comprises a topsheet and a backsheet forming an openable chassis pocket adapted to receive the first replaceable absorbent core component, the first replaceable absorbent core component is removably disposed inside the openable chassis pocket, and the openable chassis pocket has an inner end located in the crotch region and formed by an area of joining of the topsheet and the non-removable absorbent core component, the backsheet and the non-removable absorbent core component, the topsheet and the backsheet and the non-removable absorbent core component, or the topsheet and the backsheet.
- 21. A method for using a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent article comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; and a first replaceable absorbent core component disposed in capillary liquid communication with the non-removable absorbent core component and having a planar surface having a liquid permeable region and a liquid impermeable region, the method comprising the step of removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article, or inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or inserting a like replacement of the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or replacing the first replaceable absorbent core component by removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement of the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises an insertion pocket and the method comprises the step of using the insertion pocket to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 23. An article of commerce comprising a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent article comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; and a first replaceable absorbent core component disposed in capillary liquid communication with the non-removable absorbent core component and having a planar surface having a liquid permeable region and a liquid impermeable region, the article of commerce further comprising instructions for removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article, or inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or inserting a like replacement of the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or replacing the first replaceable absorbent core component by removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement of the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 24. The article of commerce of claim 23 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises an insertion pocket and the instructions include instructions for using the insertion pocket to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 25. A disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; a first replaceable absorbent core component disposed in capillary liquid communication with the non-removable absorbent core component; and an insertion tool disposed in contact with and adapted for use in inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 26. The disposable absorbent article of claim 25 wherein the insertion tool forms an openable insertion tool pocket adapted to receive and contain the first replaceable absorbent core component.
- 27. The disposable absorbent article of claim 26 wherein the insertion tool comprises a card-like element and a bag-like element attached to the card-like element and forming the openable insertion tool pocket.
- 28. The disposable absorbent article of claim 27 wherein the bag-like element is affixed to a planar surface of the card-like element.
- 29. The disposable absorbent article of claim 27 wherein the bag-like element is disposed between two card-like elements.
- 30. The disposable absorbent article of claim 27 wherein the bag-like element comprises a closure means.
- 31. The disposable absorbent article of claim 25 wherein the insertion tool comprises an insertion depth indicator adapted to provide an indication when a predetermined position of the insertion tool relative to the chassis is reached.
- 32. A method for using a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent article comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; a first replaceable absorbent core component disposed in capillary liquid communication with the non-removable absorbent core component; and an insertion tool disposed in contact with and adapted for use in inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, the method comprising the step of removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article, or inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or using the insertion tool to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or inserting a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or using the insertion tool to insert a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or replacing the first replaceable absorbent core component by removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or replacing the first replaceable absorbent core component by removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article and using the insertion tool to insert a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 33. The method of claim 32 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises an insertion pocket and the method comprises the step of using the insertion pocket to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 34. The method of claim 33 wherein the method comprises the step of inserting the insertion tool into the insertion pocket and using the insertion tool while so inserted to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 35. The method of claim 32 wherein the method comprises the step of using the insertion tool to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 36. An article of commerce comprising a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent article comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; a first replaceable absorbent core component disposed in liquid communication with the non-removable absorbent core component; and an insertion tool adapted for use in inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, the article of commerce further comprising instructions for removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article, or inserting the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or using the insertion tool to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or inserting a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or using the insertion tool to insert a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or replacing the first replaceable absorbent core component by removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article, or replacing the first replaceable absorbent core component by removing the first replaceable absorbent core component from the absorbent article and using the insertion tool to insert a like replacement first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 37. The article of commerce of claim 36 wherein the first replaceable absorbent core component comprises an insertion pocket and the instructions include instructions for using the insertion pocket to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 38. The article of commerce of claim 37 wherein the instructions include instructions for using the insertion tool in the insertion pocket to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 39. The article of commerce of claim 36 wherein the instructions include instructions for using the insertion tool to insert the first replaceable absorbent core component into the absorbent article.
- 40. A disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; and a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; wherein the chassis forms a first openable chassis pocket extending from the first waist region into and ending in the crotch region and adapted to receive an absorbent insert, the openable chassis pocket having an openable end and first and second independently extensible elements disposed adjacent to the openable end such that the second independently extensible element may be extended for access into the openable chassis pocket without extending the first independently extensible element.
- 41. The disposable absorbent article of claim 40 wherein the first independently extensible element is a first extensible waistband and the second independently extensible element is a second extensible waistband disposed in a layered configuration with the first extensible waistband.
- 42. The disposable absorbent article of claim 41 wherein the chassis has a wearer-facing layer and a garment-facing layer and the first extensible waistband is attached to the wearer-facing layer and the second extensible waistband is attached to the garment-facing layer.
- 43. The disposable absorbent article of claim 42 wherein the openable pocket is formed by and between the wearer-facing layer and the garment-facing layer and the first extensible waistband and the second extensible waistband are separable for access into the openable pocket.
- 44. The disposable absorbent article of claim 43 wherein a portion of the first extensible waistband is unattached to the wearer-facing layer.
- 45. The disposable absorbent article of claim 40 wherein the first independently extensible element is a first extensible waistband disposed in the first waist region and the second independently extensible element is a second extensible waistband disposed in the first waist region relatively nearer the crotch region than the first extensible waistband.
- 46. The disposable absorbent article of claim 40 wherein the first independently extensible element is a first portion of an extensible waistband disposed in the first waist region and the second independently extensible element is a second portion of the extensible waistband disposed relatively nearer the crotch region than the first portion of the extensible waistband.
- 47. The disposable absorbent article of claim 40 wherein the chassis comprises a topsheet and a backsheet forming the openable chassis pocket, the first independently extensible element is an extensible waistband attached to the topsheet, and the second independently extensible element is an extensible portion of the backsheet.
- 48. A method for using a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent article comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; and a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; wherein the chassis forms a first openable chassis pocket extending from the first waist region into and ending in the crotch region and adapted to receive an absorbent insert, the openable chassis pocket having an openable end and first and second independently extensible elements disposed adjacent to the openable end such that the second independently extensible element may be extended for access into the openable chassis pocket without extending the first independently extensible element, the method comprising the step of inserting the absorbent insert into the openable chassis pocket, or removing the absorbent insert from the openable chassis pocket, or inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the openable chassis pocket, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the openable chassis pocket and inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the openable chassis pocket.
- 49. An article of commerce comprising a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent article comprising:
a chassis forming a waist opening and a pair of leg openings and having longitudinally opposing first and second waist end edges, longitudinally opposing first and second waist regions adjacent to the respective waist end edges, and a crotch region longitudinally intermediate of the waist regions; and a non-removable absorbent core component disposed in the crotch region; wherein the chassis forms a first openable chassis pocket extending from the first waist region into and ending in the crotch region and adapted to receive an absorbent insert, the openable chassis pocket having an openable end and first and second independently extensible elements disposed adjacent to the openable end such that the second independently extensible element may be extended for access into the openable chassis pocket without extending the first independently extensible element, the article of commerce further comprising instructions for inserting the absorbent insert into the openable chassis pocket, or removing the absorbent insert from the openable chassis pocket, or inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the openable chassis pocket, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the openable chassis pocket and inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the openable chassis pocket.
- 50. A disposable absorbent insert adapted for use in a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, comprising
a first absorbent layer having an outer end having a width, an opposing inner end having a width smaller than the width of the outer end, a substantially rectangular portion adjacent to the outer end having a width substantially the same as the width of the outer end, and a tapered portion having two non-intersecting sides connecting the substantially rectangular portion and the inner end, wherein the disposable absorbent insert has a major surface having a liquid permeable region and a liquid impermeable region.
- 51. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 50 wherein the absorbent insert has an inner insert end and comprises an openable insertion pocket having an openable end facing away from the inner insert end.
- 52. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 50 wherein the absorbent insert comprises an insertion depth indicator adapted to provide an indication when a predetermined depth of insertion of the absorbent insert into the disposable absorbent article is reached.
- 53. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 50 wherein the absorbent insert has a bifurcated shape.
- 54. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 50 wherein the absorbent insert has an inner end, an outer end, and a generally planar surface divided longitudinally into successive first, second, third, and fourth segments defined by respective quarters of its length, the first segment including the inner end and having an area less than an area of any one of the second, third, and fourth segments, and the fourth segment including the outer end and having an area less than at least one of the second segment and the third segment.
- 55. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 50 wherein the disposable absorbent insert has an outer end shaped to form an integral pull tab for removal of the disposable absorbent insert from the absorbent article.
- 56. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 50 wherein the disposable absorbent insert comprises a multi-piece absorbent structure.
- 57. A method for using a disposable absorbent insert adapted for use in a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent insert comprising a first absorbent layer having an outer end having a width, an opposing inner end having a width smaller than the width of the outer end, a substantially rectangular portion adjacent to the outer end having a width substantially the same as the width of the outer end, and a tapered portion having two non-intersecting sides connecting the substantially rectangular portion and the inner end,
wherein the disposable absorbent insert has a major surface having a liquid permeable region and a liquid impermeable region, the method comprising the step of inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 58. The method of claim 57 wherein the absorbent insert comprises an insertion pocket and the method comprises the step of using the insertion pocket to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 59. An article of commerce comprising a disposable absorbent insert adapted for use in a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent insert comprising a first absorbent layer having an outer end having a width, an opposing inner end having a width smaller than the width of the outer end, a substantially rectangular portion adjacent to the outer end having a width substantially the same as the width of the outer end, and a tapered portion having two non-intersecting sides connecting the substantially rectangular portion and the inner end,
wherein the disposable absorbent insert has a major surface having a liquid permeable region and a liquid impermeable region, the article of commerce further comprising instructions for inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 60. The article of commerce of claim 59 wherein the absorbent insert comprises an insertion pocket and the instructions include instructions for using the insertion pocket to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 61. A disposable absorbent insert adapted for use in a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, comprising:
a first absorbent layer having an outer end having a width, an opposing inner end having a width smaller than the width of the outer end, a substantially rectangular portion adjacent to the outer end having a width substantially the same as the width of the outer end, and a tapered portion having two non-intersecting sides connecting the substantially rectangular portion and the inner end; and an insertion tool disposed in contact with and adapted for use in inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 62. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the absorbent insert has an inner insert end and comprises an openable insertion pocket having an openable end facing away from the inner insert end.
- 63. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the absorbent insert comprises an insertion depth indicator adapted to provide an indication when a predetermined depth of insertion of the absorbent insert into the disposable absorbent article is reached.
- 64. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the absorbent insert has a bifurcated shape.
- 65. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the disposable absorbent insert has an outer end shaped to form an integral pull tab for removal of the disposable absorbent insert from the absorbent article.
- 66. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the disposable absorbent insert comprises a multi-piece absorbent structure.
- 67. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the insertion tool forms an openable insertion tool pocket adapted to receive and contain the disposable absorbent insert.
- 68. The disposable absorbent insert of claim 61 wherein the insertion tool comprises an insertion depth indicator adapted to provide an indication when a predetermined position of the insertion tool relative to the absorbent article is reached.
- 69. A method for using a disposable absorbent insert adapted for use in a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent insert comprising:
a first absorbent layer having an outer end having a width, an opposing inner end having a width smaller than the width of the outer end, a substantially rectangular portion adjacent to the outer end having a width substantially the same as the width of the outer end, and a tapered portion having two non-intersecting sides connecting the substantially rectangular portion and the inner end; and an insertion tool disposed in contact with and adapted for use in inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, the method comprising the step of inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or using the insertion tool to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article and using the insertion tool to insert a like replacement absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 70. The method of claim 69 wherein the absorbent insert comprises an insertion pocket and the method comprises the step of using the insertion pocket to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 71. The method of claim 70 wherein the method comprises the step of using the insertion tool in the insertion pocket to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 72. An article of commerce comprising a disposable absorbent insert adapted for use in a disposable absorbent article adapted to be worn about a lower torso of a human body, the absorbent insert comprising:
a first absorbent layer having an outer end having a width, an opposing inner end having a width smaller than the width of the outer end, a substantially rectangular portion adjacent to the outer end having a width substantially the same as the width of the outer end, and a tapered portion having two non-intersecting sides connecting the substantially rectangular portion and the inner end; and an insertion tool disposed in contact with and adapted for use in inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, the article of commerce further comprising instructions for inserting the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or using the insertion tool to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article and inserting a like replacement absorbent insert into the absorbent article, or replacing the absorbent insert by removing the absorbent insert from the absorbent article and using the insertion tool to insert a like replacement absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 73. The article of commerce of claim 72 wherein the absorbent insert comprises an insertion pocket and the instructions include instructions for using the insertion pocket to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
- 74. The article of commerce of claim 73 wherein the instructions include instructions for using the insertion tool in the insertion pocket to insert the absorbent insert into the absorbent article.
