Claims
- 1. A lens injecting apparatus for inserting a deformable intraocular lens into the eye, said lens injecting apparatus comprising:
- a lens injecting device having a lens cartridge receiver and means for forcing the deformable intraocular lens through a lens delivery passageway in the lens injecting apparatus, and
- a lens cartridge for accommodating the deformable intraocular lens, said lens cartridge including a lens holding portion and a sleeve portion slidably connected together for closing said lens cartridge after loading the deformable intraocular lens into said lens holding portion of said lens cartridge to form an assembled lens cartridge, said lens delivery passageway extending through said lens cartridge, said lens holding portion and said sleeve portion are configured for substantially enclosing the deformable intraocular lens in a portion of said lens delivery passageway through said lens cartridge when assembled together, said lens holding portion being connected to a nozzle portion.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the portion of said lens delivery passageway extending through said lens holding portion of said cartridge includes an open lens delivery passageway portion for receiving the deformable intraocular lens from a side of said lens holding portion, said open lens delivery passageway portion in said lens holding portion leading into a closed lens delivery passageway portion extending through said nozzle portion.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said lens holding portion is defined by a lens receiving potion and a lens transition portion, said open lens delivery passageway portion extending through said lens holding portion having an open lens delivery passageway section with a fixed transverse cross-sectional shape and size and another open lens delivery passageway section with a varying cross-sectional shape and inwardly tapering cross-sectional size in a direction of lens delivery.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said lens transition portion includes a closed lens delivery passageway section connecting said open lens delivery passageway portion of said lens holding portion with said closed lens delivery passageway through said nozzle portion.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said lens holding portion includes a lens receiving portion having a lens delivery passageway section with a fixed transverse cross-sectional size and shape, and a lens transition portion having a lens delivery passageway section with an inwardly tapering and varying shaped transverse cross section in a direction of lens delivery.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said lens injecting device and said lens cartridge are configured so that said lens cartridge is loaded into a from end of said lens injecting device.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said lens cartridge locks into said lens cartridge receiver when loaded into said lens injecting device.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said lens cartridge locks into said lens cartridge receiver when loaded into said lens injecting device.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said lens injecting device and said lens cartridge are made of readily disposable material.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said lens injecting device and said lens cartridge are made of autoclavable material.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said lens injecting device is made of one or more materials selected from the group consisting of polysulfone, polycarbonate, nylon-66 polytetrafluoroethylene and polyvinylidene fluoride.
- 12. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said lens holding portion and said nozzle portion are defined by an integral one-piece unit.
- 13. A lens injecting apparatus for inserting a deformable intraocular lens into the eye, comprising:
- a lens injecting device including a lens cartridge receiver and means for forcing the deformable intraocular lens through a lens delivery passageway in the lens injecting apparatus;
- a lens cartridge having a lens receiving portion, said lens cartridge including a nozzle portion; and
- a sleeve slidably connected to said lens cartridge for closing said lens cartridge and substantially at least partially covering the deformable intraocular lens after being loaded into said lens receiving portion of said lens cartridge.
- 14. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said slidable sleeve fully encloses the deformable intraocular lens after being loaded into said lens receiving portion of said lens cartridge.
- 15. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said lens receiving portion and said nozzle portion are defined by an integral one-piece unit.
