Claims
- 1. A laryngeal mask airway device, comprising:
(A) an inflatable cuff, the cuff defining a central opening at least when inflated; (B) an airway tube extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the airway tube defining an internal passage, the airway tube defining two or more tabs disposed near the distal end of the airway tube, the cuff being coupled to the airway tube near the distal end of the airway tube, the internal passage extending from the proximal end of the tube to the central opening defined by the cuff, the tabs extending from the airway tube into the central opening defined by the cuff when inflated.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, the airway tube including a backplate portion disposed near the distal end of the airway tube, the backplate portion defining a laryngeal side, the tabs extending from the laryngeal side of the airway tube.
- 3. A device according to claim 2, the cuff being attached to the laryngeal side of the airway tube.
- 4. A device according to claim 1, the cuff defining a pharyngeal side and a laryngeal side, the pharyngeal side being closer than the laryngeal side to a pharynx of a patient when the device is in an inserted location within the patient, the airway tube being attached to the pharyngeal side of the cuff.
- 5. A device according to claim 1, the device further including a generally elliptically shaped plate, the cuff being attached to the plate.
- 6. A device according to claim 5, the airway tube being attached to the plate.
- 7. A device according to claim 1, the cuff being characterized by a circular cross section.
- 8. A device according to claim 1, the cuff comprising PVC.
- 9. A laryngeal mask airway device, comprising:
(A) a mask portion including an inflatable cuff, the mask portion defining a central opening at least when the cuff is inflated; (B) an airway tube extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the airway tube defining an internal passage, the airway tube defining two or more tabs disposed near the distal end of the airway tube, the mask portion being coupled to the airway tube near the distal end of the airway tube, the internal passage extending from the proximal end of the tube to the central opening defined by the mask portion, the tabs extending from the airway tube into the central opening defined by the mask portion.
- 10. A device according to claim 9, the airway tube including a backplate portion disposed near the distal end of the airway tube, the backplate portion defining a laryngeal side, the tabs extending from the laryngeal side of the airway tube.
- 11. A device according to claim 10, the mask portion being attached to the laryngeal side of the airway tube.
- 12. A device according to claim 9, the mask portion defining a pharyngeal side and a laryngeal side, the pharyngeal side being closer than the laryngeal side to a pharynx of a patient when the device is in an inserted location within the patient, the airway tube being attached to the pharyngeal side of the mask portion.
- 13. A device according to claim 12, the mask portion including a generally elliptically shaped plate, the cuff being attached to the plate.
- 14. A device according to claim 9, the cuff being characterized by a circular cross section.
- 15. A device according to claim 9, the mask portion comprising PVC.
- 16. A laryngeal mask airway device, comprising a mask portion and an airway tube, the airway tube extending along a central axis from a proximal end to a distal end, the mask portion being attached to the airway tube near the distal end of the airway tube, the mask portion being insertable through the mouth of a patient to an inserted location within the patient, the mask portion forming a seal around the patient's glottic opening when the mask portion is in the inserted location, the airway tube defining an internal passage, the internal passage extending from the proximal end of the airway tube to the mask portion, the internal passage defining one or more notches, each of the notches extending along at least a portion of the airway tube in a direction generally parallel to the central axis, the notches being configured to allow a cylindrical tube inserted into the proximal end of the airway tube to extend into the notches as the cylindrical tube is advanced through the airway tube.
- 17. A device according to claim 16, the airway tube including a curved central portion disposed between the proximal and distal ends, the central portion extending through part of the patient's natural upper airway when the mask portion is in the inserted location, the central portion defining an inner side and an outer side, one of the notches being defined in the outer side of the central portion.
- 18. A device according to claim 17, the airway tube including a proximal portion near the proximal end of the airway tube, two of the notches being defined in the proximal portion.
- 19. A device according to claim 16, the airway tube including a proximal portion near the proximal end of the airway tube, two of the notches being defined in the proximal portion.
- 20. A device according to claim 19, the airway tube including a curved central portion disposed between the proximal and distal ends, the central portion extending through part of the patient's natural upper airway when the mask portion is in the inserted location, the central portion defining an inner side and an outer side, one of the notches being defined in the outer side of the central portion.
- 21. A device according to claim 16, the device including a bar disposed in the airway tube near the distal end of the airway tube, at least one of the notches being defined by the bar.
- 22. A laryngeal mask airway device, comprising a mask portion and an airway tube, the airway tube extending along a central axis from a proximal end to a distal end, the mask portion being attached to the airway tube near the distal end of the airway tube, the mask portion being insertable through the mouth of a patient to an inserted location within the patient, the mask portion forming a seal around the patient's glottic opening when the mask portion is in the inserted location, the airway tube defining an internal passage, the internal passage extending from the proximal end of the airway tube to the mask portion, the airway tube including a bar extending generally perpendicular to the central axis, the bar being disposed near the distal end of the airway tube, the bar defining a notch, the notch extending in a direction generally parallel to the central axis, the notch being configured to allow a cylindrical tube inserted into the proximal end of the airway tube and advanced through the airway tube to extend into the notch.
- 23. A mask portion of a laryngeal airway device, the mask portion defining a proximal end, a distal end, and a midline extending from the proximal end to the distal end, the mask portion including:
(A) a generally elliptically shaped plate, the plate defining a laryngeal side and a pharyngeal side; (B) an inflatable cuff, the cuff being attached to the laryngeal side of the plate, the cuff being characterized by a generally toroidal shape when inflated; (C) a support attached to the cuff, the support resisting compression of the cuff towards the midline.
- 24. A mask portion according to claim 23, the support comprising a plate defining one or more apertures.
- 25. A mask portion according to claim 23, wherein the support comprises lateral tabs disposed on an outer portion of the support.
- 26. A mask portion according to claim 23, the support comprising a horseshoe shaped rim.
- 27. A mask portion according to claim 26, the support further comprising a bar fixed to the rim.
- 28. A mask portion according to claim 27, the bar extending substantially parallel to the midline.
- 29. A laryngeal mask airway device, comprising:
(A) an airway tube extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the airway tube defining an internal passage; (B) a mask portion defining a proximal end, a distal end, and a midline extending from the proximal end of the mask portion to the distal end of the mask portion, the mask portion comprising:
(a) a generally elliptically shaped plate, the plate defining a laryngeal side and a pharyngeal side, the airway tube being fixed to the pharyngeal side of the plate; (b) an inflatable cuff, the cuff being attached to the laryngeal side of the plate, the cuff being characterized by a generally toroidal shape when inflated, the cuff defining an inner wall and an outer wall, the cuff defining a central opening when inflated; (c) a support attached to the inner wall of the cuff, the support resisting compression of the cuff towards the midline, the plate, the inflated cuff, and the support defining an internal passage extending through the mask portion, the internal passage of the mask portion communicating with the internal passage of the airway tube.
