- 1. said detent means comprise a set of notches on said body, with corresponding inwardly extending fingers on said protector case that lock into said notches;
- 2. said notches being shaped so as to allow extension from said second position to said first position with slight force applied by human fingertip and not readily allowing movement from said first position to said second position; said needle is:
- A. removably wholly contained within said protector case in said first position; and
- B. extended for use in said second position;
- b. said body having thereon extensions with extremities defining an external first rectangular cross-section thereto;
- c. said protector case having:
- 1. an external second rectangular cross-section;
- 2. an internal third rectangular cross-section, complementary to said external first rectangular cross-section; and
- 3. said first end:
- A. having an aperture therein through which said needle extends when said body is in said second position; and
- B. being shaped to promote optimum orientation of said needle for insertion in a patient, when said body is in said second position.
- 4. The intravenous catheter needle fixture of claim 3, wherein said external first rectangular cross-section is defined by extremities extending substantially tangentially from said body.
- 5. The intravenous catheter needle fixture of claim 4, wherein said protector case has lateral extensions thereon to facilitate holding said fixture firmly but removably in place when said needle is inserted in a patient.
- 6. The intravenous catheter needle fixture of claim 1, wherein the body has a finger boss near the first end thereof, and said protector case has an elongated opening therein exposing said finger boss for contact by a finger of a user to facilitate moving said body and protector case to the first position wholly containing the needle.
- 7. The intravenous catheter needle fixture of claim 6, wherein the protector case includes a member defining the end of the opening thereof and which member forms a stop for said finger boss upon movement to said first position.
- 8. The catheter of claim 7, wherein this member is a cross-strap on the case.
- 9. The intravenous catheter needle fixture of claim 1, wherein the detent means for holding said body within said protector case in the second position comprises slots in the second end of the body and a pair of inwardly extending fingers on the second end of the protector case, and the slots on the second end of said body having edges inclined toward the first end of said body and the fingers on the case having edges inclined toward the first end of the case, said respective inclined edges facilitating release of the detent means in moving said body and case to said first position wherein the needle is wholly contained within the case.
- 10. A fixture for use with a needle including a body and a protector case and wherein the needle can be wholly contained within the protector case in a first position and extended and uncovered for use in a second position comprising
- a body having first and second ends, the first end being adapted to have a needle mounted thereon for communication of fluid between the needle and body, the body having a finger boss near the first end thereof,
- said body further including extensions extending outward from the body with extremities defining an external first rectangular cross-section thereto, at least some of said extensions having grooves therein near the first end of said body forming a first detent for holding said case in the first position with respect to the body to contain a needle, and the body having further grooves toward the second end thereof forming a second detent for holding the case in the second position extended with respect to the body, and
- said protector case having an internal rectangular cross-section complimentary to said external first rectangular cross-section of the body and being slidably disposed with respect to said body and including a plurality of inwardly extending fingers near the second end thereof for engaging the detents of the body, and
- the case further having an elongated opening through which the finger boss of the body extends for allowing contact with a finger of a user for facilitating moving the case to the first position with respect to the body for containing a needle, and the case having a member at an end of the elongated opening engagable by the finger boss to function as a stop for the finger boss.
- 11. A fixture for holding a needle as in claim 10, wherein said extensions extend tangentially from the body and comprise four extensions, and the grooves forming the first and second detents comprise grooves in all of said extensions, with the grooves at the second end of the body having edges inclined toward the first end of the body to facilitate release of the fingers of the case therefrom when extending the case to the first position to contain a needle, and said member comprising a cross-strap on the case for engaging the finger boss when the case is extended to the first position.
- 12. A fixture for holding a needle as in claim 10, including a fluid container on the second end of said body, and including lateral extensions on the case to facilitate holding the fixture firmly but removably in place when the needle is inserted in a patient.
- 13. A fixture for use with a needle including a body and a protector case and wherein the needle can be wholly contained within the protector case in a first position and extended and uncovered for use in a second position comprising
