Claims
- 1. A butterfly wing IV catheter comprising a body member having laterally extending tabs to help hold the catheter in place for an extended period of time, the body member having an opening therethrough and a slot in a wall of the body member having first and second spaced pockets, and
- a slide member configured to fit and slide within the opening in the body member and comprising a needle and a hollow fitting to which flexible tubing can be attached, the slider member including a boss adapted to fit into the first and second pockets of the body member to define respective extended and retracted positions of the needle, and wherein when the needle is retracted the hollow fitting extends outwardly from the opening in the body member and wherein when the needle is extended the hollow fitting is adapted to pull flexible tubing into an end of the opening of the body member.
- 2. A catheter as in claim 1 wherein the needle has a bevel at the outer end thereof, the body member has a rectangular inner cross-section and the slider member has a rectangular outer cross-section, and wherein said inner and outer cross-sections interact to prevent rotation of the slider member within the body member and thus maintain a desired orientation of the needle bevel.
- 3. A butterfly wing IV catheter comprising a body member having laterally extending tabs to help hold the catheter in place for an extended period of time, the body member having an opening therethrough and a slot in a wall of the body member having first and second spaced pockets,
- a slide member configured to fit and slide within the opening in the body member and comprising a needle and a hollow fitting to which flexible tubing can be attached, the slider member including a boss adapted to fit into the first and second pockets of the body member to define respective extended and retracted positions of the needle, and wherein when the needle is retracted the hollow fitting extends outwardly from the opening in the body member and wherein when the needle is extended the hollow fitting is adapted to pull flexible tubing into an end of the opening of the body member, and
- wherein the body member includes a slot extending between the first and second spaced pockets and includes protrusions adjacent to and defining the first and second spaced pockets, the boss of the slider member extends into the slot and includes an inclined surface on a proximal side thereof which can wedge under the respective protrusions such that when the boss is forced rearward, protrusions flex outward allowing the boss to move rearward past the protrusions and into the second spaced pocket to retain the needle in the retracted position thereof.
- 4. A catheter as in claim 3 wherein the boss has a vertical surface on a distal side thereof which interacts with the protrusions which form the second spaced pocket and which, when the boss is moved rearward past protrusions and into the second pocket, prevents the slider from moving forward to expose the needle.
- 5. A butterfly wing IV catheter comprising a body member having laterally extending tabs to help hold the catheter in place for an extended period of time, the body member having an opening therethrough and a slot in a wall of the body member having first and second spaced pockets,
- a slide member configured to fit and slide within the opening in the body member and comprising a needle and a hollow fitting to which flexible tubing can be attached, the slider member including a boss adapted to fit into the first and second pockets of the body member to define respective extended and retracted positions of the needle, and wherein when the needle is retracted the hollow fitting extends outwardly from the opening in the body member and wherein when the needle is extended the hollow fitting is adapted to pull flexible tubing into an end of the opening of the body member,
- wherein the needle has a bevel at the outer end thereof, the body member has rectangular inner cross-section and the slider member has a rectangular outer cross-section, and wherein said inner and outer cross-sections interact to prevent rotation of the slider member within the body member and thus maintain a desired orientation of the needle bevel, and
- wherein the body member includes a slot extending between the first and second spaced pockets and includes protrusions adjacent to and defining the first and second spaced pockets, the boss of the slider member extends into the slot and includes an inclined surface on a proximal side thereof which can wedge under the respective protrusions such that when the boss is forced rearward, protrusions flex outward allowing the boss to move rearward past the protrusions and into the second spaced pocket to retain the needle in the retracted position thereof.
- 6. A catheter as in claim 5 wherein the boss has a vertical surface on a distal side thereof which interacts with the protrusions which form the second spaced pocket and which, when the boss is moved rearward past protrusions and into the second pocket, prevents the slider from moving forward to expose the needle.
