Claims
- 1. A toothbrush and toothpaste combination comprising:
- (a) a plurality of polymeric bristles; and
- (b) a toothpaste composition comprising a polymer chemically bonded to the surface of the bristles.
- 2. The combination of claim 1, wherein the bristles comprise a polymer selected from the group consisting of nylon, polypropylene and polyester, each polymer in this group containing in its molecular structure active hydrogens which undergo abstraction for graft polymerization at the vacated hydrogen sites.
- 3. The combination of claim 1, wherein the toothpaste composition includes a flavoring that is covalently bonded to the polymer.
- 4. The combination of claim 3, wherein the flavoring is selected from the group consisting of peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen and cinnamon.
- 5. The combination of claim 1, wherein the toothpaste composition is covalently bonded to the bristles by graft polymerization which involves the use of a graft initiator, a peroxide catalyst, and at least one polymerizable monomer or prepolymer, which is an acrylic or vinyl monomer or prepolymer.
- 6. The combination of claim 5, wherein the graft initiator comprises metal ions which abstract the active hydrogens, thereby transforming the vacated hydrogen sites into free radical sites and initiating graft polymerization at the free radical sites, the resulting polymer being covalently bonded to the bristles.
- 7. The combination of claim 6, wherein the metal ions are ferrous ions.
- 8. The combination of claim 5, wherein the peroxide catalyst is hydrogen peroxide.
- 9. The combination of claim 5, wherein the acrylic and vinyl monomers and prepolymers are selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol.
- 10. A toothbrush and toothpaste combination comprising:
- (a) a plurality of polymeric bristles; and
- (b) a toothpaste composition comprising a polymer graft polymerized to the surface of the bristles.
- 11. The combination of claim 10, wherein the bristles comprise a polymer selected from the group consisting of nylon, polypropylene and polyester, each polymer in this group containing in its molecular structure active hydrogens which undergo abstraction for graft polymerization, at the vacated hydrogen sites.
- 12. The combination of claim 11, wherein the toothpaste composition includes a flavoring that is graft polymerized to the polymer.
- 13. The combination of claim 10, wherein the toothpaste composition includes a flavoring that is graft polymerized to the polymer.
- 14. The combination of claim 10, wherein the toothpaste composition is chemically bonded to the bristles by graft polymerization which involves the use of a graft initiator, a peroxide catalyst, and at least one polymerizable monomer or prepolymer, which is an acrylic or vinyl monomer or prepolymer.
- 15. The combination of claim 14, wherein the graft initiator comprises metal ions which abstract the active hydrogens, thereby transforming the vacated hydrogen sites into free radical sites and initiating graft polymerization at the free radical sites, the resulting polymer being covalently bonded to the bristles.
- 16. The combination of claim 15, wherein the metal ions are ferrous ions.
- 17. The combination of claim 11, wherein the peroxide catalyst is hydrogen peroxide.
- 18. The combination of claim 14, wherein the acrylic and vinyl monomers and prepolymers are selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol.
- 19. The combination of claim 14, wherein the toothpaste composition includes a flavoring that is graft polymerized to the polymer.
- 20. A toothbrush comprising a plurality of bristles having a toothpaste composition graft polymerized to the bristle surfaces forming a coating thereon.
- 21. The toothbrush of claim 20, wherein the toothpaste composition comprises a flavoring.
- 22. The toothbrush of claim 21, wherein the flavoring is selected from the group consisting of peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen and cinnamon.
- 23. A toothbrush and toothpaste combination comprising:
- (a) a plurality of polymeric bristles; and
- (b) a toothpaste composition comprising a polymer covalently bonded to the surface of the bristles, the covalent bond being the result of graft polymerization involving a grafting solution comprising
- (i) at least one acrylic or vinyl monomer or prepolymer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol, methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylatc, ethyl methacrylate, isobutylmethacrylate and methyl acrylate, and ranging from about 0.0001% to about 2% by weight of the composition,
- (ii) a graft initiator ranging from about 0.00001% to about 0.01% by weight of the composition, and
- (iii) a peroxide catalyst ranging from about 0.001% to about 1% of weight of the composition.
- 24. A toothbrush and toothpaste combination comprising:
- (a) a plurality of polymeric bristles; and
- (b) a toothpaste composition comprising a polymer graft polymerized to the surface of the bristles, the graft polymerization involving the use of a grafting solution comprising
- (i) at least one acrylic or vinyl monomer or prepolymer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol, methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, isobutylmethacrylate and methyl acrylate, and ranging from about 0.0001% to about 2% by weight of the composition,
