Claims
- 1. A vacuum filtration apparatus comprising:
a base containing a side wall, said base being made of a material that is sufficiently pliable to allow the side wall of said base to deflect outward, a funnel capable of holding unfiltered liquid therein, with the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel having a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the inner surface of said side wall of said base, said funnel releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the inner surface of said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel, thereby causing the side wall of said base to deflect outward, a filter means disposed in said base, said base further containing an outlet port in fluid flow communication with the downstream side of said filter means, said filter means sealed to said base, thereby preventing unfiltered liquid in said funnel from flowing between said filter means and said outlet port.
- 2. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 1 wherein said base contains a filter seal surface, with at least a portion of said side wall of said base disposed above and substantially perpendicular to said filter seal surface of said base.
- 3. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 2 wherein said filter means is releasably sealed to said base by compressing said filter means between the bottom of said funnel and said filter seal surface of said base.
- 4. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 2 wherein said filter means is non-releasably sealed to said base with a heat seal.
- 5. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 1 wherein the angle of the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel is equal to or greater than the minimum deflected angle of said inner surface of said side wall of said base, thereby maximizing the surface area of said interference fit, thereby maximizing the strength of said interference fit.
- 6. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 2 wherein said base is made from high density polyethylene, and said funnel is made from polystyrene.
- 7. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 1 wherein said vacuum filtration apparatus contains a lid that can be releasably attached to the top of said funnel.
- 8. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 7 wherein the inner surface of the outer wall of said funnel is releasably attached to a lid clamp ring on said funnel.
- 9. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 7 wherein said lid can also be releasably attached to the top of said base.
- 10. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 1 wherein said vacuum filtration apparatus is disposable.
- 11. A vacuum filtration apparatus comprising:
a base containing a side wall and a filter seal surface, a funnel releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of said funnel, a filter means disposed in said base with the downstream side of said filter means disposed above said filter seal surface of said base, said base further containing an outlet port in fluid flow communication with the downstream side of said filter means, a pliable sealing means disposed between the bottom of said funnel and the upstream surface of said filter means, said pliable sealing means being sufficiently compressed between the bottom of said funnel and the upstream surface of said filter means to releasably seal said filter means to said base with a compression seal between the bottom of said pliable sealing means and said filter seal surface of said base, thereby preventing unfiltered liquid in said funnel from flowing between said filter means and said outlet port.
- 12. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 11 wherein said funnel is releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the inner surface of said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel.
- 13. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 12 wherein said base is made of a material that is sufficiently pliable to allow the side wall of said base to deflect outward.
- 14. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 13 wherein the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel has a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the inner surface of said side wall of said base, thereby causing the side wall of said base to deflect outward when said funnel is releasably attached to said base.
- 15. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 11 wherein said funnel further includes one or more integral flexible funnel seal rings protruding from the bottom outer periphery of said funnel, and wherein the releasable attachment between said funnel and said base is an interference fit between the one or more integral flexible funnel seal rings protruding from the bottom outer periphery of said funnel, and the inner surface of said side wall of said base.
- 16. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 11 wherein said pliable sealing means is an o-ring.
- 17. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 11 wherein said pliable sealing means is a gasket.
- 18. The vacuum filtration apparatus of claim 12 wherein said vacuum filtration apparatus is disposable.
- 19. A filtration system comprising:
(1) a vacuum filtration apparatus comprising:
(a) a funnel for receiving unfiltered liquid, (b) a base disposed below said funnel, said base containing an outlet port, (c) a filter means sealed to said vacuum filtration apparatus, thereby preventing unfiltered liquid from flowing between said filter means and said outlet port of said base, (2) a vacuum base assembly comprising:
(a) a vacuum base containing a vacuum port disposed in a wall of said vacuum base, and a means to place said vacuum port in fluid flow communication with a vacuum source, said wall disposed substantially horizontal, (b) a gasket disposed above said wall of said vacuum base, said vacuum port located within the inner periphery of said gasket, with said vacuum filtration apparatus positioned on said vacuum base assembly, so that said outlet port of said base of said vacuum filtration apparatus is substantially aligned with said vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly, with a portion of the bottom outside wall of the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus in contact with said gasket, said gasket creating a seal between the portion of the bottom outside wall of the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus that is in contact with said gasket, and said wall of said vacuum base assembly, thereby placing said outlet port of said vacuum filtration apparatus in fluid flow communication with said vacuum port, and thereby placing the void between the portion of the bottom outside wall of the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus that is not in contact with said gasket, and said wall of said vacuum base assembly in fluid flow communication with said vacuum port.
- 20. The filtration system of claim 19 wherein the bottom of the outlet port of-said vacuum filtration apparatus is disposed below the top of the vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly.
- 21. The filtration system of claim 20 wherein said base contains a filter seal surface and a side wall, with at least a portion of said side wall disposed above and substantially perpendicular to said filter seal surface,
said funnel releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the inner surface of said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of said funnel, said filter means disposed in said base with the downstream side of said filter means disposed above and sealed to said filter seal surface of said base, thereby preventing unfiltered liquid from flowing between said filter means and said outlet port of said base.
- 22. The filtration system of claim 21 wherein said base is made of a material that is sufficiently pliable to allow the side wall of said base to deflect outward,
with the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel having a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the inner surface of said side wall of said base, said funnel releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the inner surface of said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel, thereby causing the side wall of said base to deflect outward.
- 23. The filtration system of claim 22 wherein said filter means is releasably sealed to said base by compressing said filter means between the bottom of said funnel and said filter seal surface of said base.
- 24. The filtration system of claim 22 wherein said filter means is non-releasably sealed to said base with a heat seal.
- 25. The filtration system of claim 21 wherein said vacuum base assembly further contains a means to releasably clamp said vacuum filtration apparatus to said vacuum base.
- 26. The filtration system of claim 25 wherein said funnel of said vacuum filtration apparatus further contains a funnel stop, and
wherein said clamping means of said vacuum base is a pair of cams, that when positioned in the closed position exert a downward force on said funnel stop, thereby assuring that said funnel is fully seated in said base, and thereby assuring that said gasket is compressed.
- 27. A method for filtering a liquid with a filtration system comprising the steps of:
(1)providing a vacuum base assembly comprising:
(a) a vacuum base containing a vacuum port disposed in a wall of said vacuum base, and a means to place said vacuum port in fluid flow communication with a vacuum source, said wall disposed substantially horizontal, (b) a gasket disposed above said wall of said vacuum base, said vacuum port located within the inner periphery of said gasket, (2) providing a vacuum filtration apparatus comprising:
(a) a funnel for receiving unfiltered liquid, (b) a base disposed below said funnel, said base containing an outlet port, (c) a filter means sealed to said vacuum filtration apparatus, thereby preventing unfiltered liquid from flowing between said filter means and said outlet port of said base, (3) positioning said vacuum filtration apparatus onto said vacuum base assembly, so that said outlet port of said base of said vacuum filtration apparatus is substantially aligned with said vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly, with a portion of the bottom outside wall of the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus disposed above, and in contact with, the top surface of said gasket of the vacuum base assembly,
(a) thereby placing the void between the portion of the bottom outside wall of the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus that is not in contact with said gasket, and said wall of said vacuum base assembly in fluid flow communication with said vacuum port of said vacuum base, and (b) thereby placing said outlet port of said vacuum filtration apparatus in fluid flow communication with said vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly, (4) adding a quantity of liquid to be filtered to said funnel, (5) placing said vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly in fluid flow communication with a vacuum source,
(a) thereby evacuating said void between the portion of the bottom outside wall of the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus that is not in contact with said gasket, and said wall of said vacuum base assembly,
(i) thereby applying a downward force to the base of the vacuum filtration apparatus, (b) thereby creating a vacuum on the downstream side of said filter means of said vacuum filtration apparatus,
(i)thereby sucking unfiltered liquid from said funnel, through said filter means, into said outlet port of said vacuum filtration apparatus, into said vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly, into said vacuum source, (6) filtering the desired quantity of liquid, (7) venting said vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly to atmosphere,
(a) thereby venting said void,
(i) thereby releasing the downward force on said base of said vacuum filtration apparatus, (b) thereby venting said outlet port of said vacuum filtration apparatus, (8) removing said vacuum filtration apparatus from said vacuum base assembly.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein the bottom of the outlet port of said vacuum filtration apparatus is disposed below the top of the vacuum port of said vacuum base assembly.
- 29. The method of claim 28 wherein said base contains a filter seal surface and a side wall, with at least a portion of said side wall disposed above and substantially perpendicular to said filter seal surface,
with said funnel releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the inner surface of said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of said funnel, said filter means disposed in said base with the downstream side of said filter means disposed above and sealed to said filter seal surface of said base, thereby preventing unfiltered liquid from flowing between said filter means and said outlet port of said base.
- 30. The method of claim 29 wherein said base is made of a material that is sufficiently pliable to allow the side wall of said base to deflect outward,
with the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel having a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the inner surface of said side wall of said base, said funnel releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the inner surface of said side wall of said base and the bottom portion of the outside wall of said funnel, thereby causing the side wall of said base to deflect outward.
- 31. The method of claim 30 wherein said filter means is releasably sealed to said base by compressing said filter means between the bottom of said funnel and said filter seal surface of said base.
- 32. The method of claim 30 wherein said filter means is non-releasably sealed to said base with a heat seal.
- 33. The method of claim 29 wherein said funnel further includes one or more integral flexible funnel seal rings protruding from the bottom outer periphery of said funnel, and
wherein said funnel is releasably attached to said base with an interference fit between the one or more integral flexible funnel seal rings protruding from the bottom outer periphery of said funnel, and the inner surface of said side wall of said base.
- 34. The method of claim 33 wherein said funnel is removed from said base by squeezing the outside opposite faces of the funnel,
thereby causing the opposite faces of the funnel that are squeezed to distort inward, thereby causing the bottom of the funnel to bow, thereby causing the one or more integral flexible seal rings to move away from the inner wall of the base, thereby releasing the funnel from the base.
