Claims
- 1. An angular distraction apparatus for an external fixation device used to rigidly immobilize a bone fracture during angular distraction of the bone segments, comprising:
- first pivotable connector means for connecting to a first external fixator frame member and providing a first pivotable connection;
- second pivotable connector means for connecting to a second external fixator frame member and providing a second pivotable connection;
- pivotable spacer means for pivotally connecting to and separating said first and second external fixator frame members; and
- distractor means including first and second portions for connecting to said first and second pivotable connections of said first and second pivotable connector means, respectively;
- wherein said distractor means, said first and second pivotable connector means and said pivotable spacer means connected together are further for rigidly and adjustably disposing said second external fixator frame member at an angular orientation with respect to said first external fixator frame member and for adjusting said angular orientation; and
- wherein said distractor means, said first and second pivotable connector means and said pivotable spacer means connected together are still further for connecting to said first and second external fixator frame members and forming a rigid structure with a rigidity which is maintained throughout fixatation including during adjusting of said angular orientation.
- 2. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said distractor means comprises a single-threaded, rotatable rod which is rotatively engaged with said first pivotable connector means and threadedly engaged with said second pivotable connector means.
- 3. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 2, wherein said distractor means further comprises a knob assembly which is engaged with said rotatable rod.
- 4. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said first pivotable connector means comprises a metal and plastic pivot assembly.
- 5. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 4, wherein said metal and plastic pivot assembly comprises a metal bracket with a pivotable plastic insert.
- 6. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said second pivotable connector means comprises a metal and plastic pivot assembly.
- 7. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 6, wherein said metal and plastic pivot assembly comprises a metal bracket with a pivotable, threaded, plastic insert.
- 8. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said pivotable spacer means comprises a metal spacer and a metal and plastic pivot assembly.
- 9. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 8, wherein said metal spacer comprises a rod which includes a first rod portion for engaging said metal and plastic pivot assembly and includes a second rod portion for connecting to said second external fixator frame member, and wherein said metal and plastic pivot assembly includes a metal bracket for connecting to said first external fixator frame member and includes a pivotable, plastic insert for engaging said first rod portion.
- 10. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said pivotable, plastic insert pivots about a pivot axis which is disposed to be between said first and second external fixator frame members.
- 11. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said pivotable, plastic insert pivots about a pivot axis which is disposed to be adjacent said first external fixator frame member.
- 12. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said pivotable, plastic insert pivots about a pivot axis which is disposed to be adjacent said second external fixator frame member.
- 13. An angular distraction apparatus for an external fixation device used to rigidly immobilize a bone fracture during angular distraction of the bone segments, comprising:
- a first pivotable connector which connects to a first external fixator frame member and provides a first pivotable connection;
- a second pivotable connector which connects to a second external fixator frame member and provides a second pivotable connection;
- a pivotable spacer which pivotally connects to and separates said first and second external fixator frame members; and
- a distractor including first and second portions which connect to said first and second pivotable connections of said first and second pivotable connectors, respectively;
- wherein said distractor, said first and second pivotable connectors and said pivotable spacer connected together further rigidly and adjustably dispose said second external fixator frame member at an angular orientation with respect to said first external fixator frame member for adjusting said angular orientation; and
- wherein said distractor, said first and second pivotable connectors and said pivotable spacer connected together still further connect to said first and second external fixator frame members to form a rigid structure with a rigidity which is maintained throughout fixation including during said adjusting of said angular orientation.
- 14. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein said distractor comprises a single-threaded, rotatable rod which is rotatively engaged with said first pivotable connector and threadedly engaged with said second pivotable connector.
- 15. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said distractor further comprises a knob assembly which is engaged with said rotatable rod.
- 16. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein said first pivotable connector comprises a metal and plastic pivot assembly.
- 17. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 16, wherein said metal and plastic pivot assembly comprises a metal bracket with a pivotable plastic insert.
- 18. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein said second pivotable connector comprises a metal and plastic pivot assembly.
- 19. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 18, wherein said metal and plastic pivot assembly comprises a metal bracket with a pivotable, threaded, plastic insert.
- 20. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein said pivotable spacer comprises a metal spacer and a metal and plastic pivot assembly.
- 21. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 20, wherein said metal spacer comprises a rod which includes a first rod portion for engaging said metal and plastic pivot assembly and includes a second rod portion for connecting to said second external fixator frame member, and wherein said metal and plastic pivot assembly includes a metal bracket for connecting to said first external fixator frame member and includes a pivotable, plastic insert for engaging said first rod portion.
- 22. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein said pivotable, plastic insert pivots about a pivot axis which is disposed to be between said first and second external fixator frame members.
- 23. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein said pivotable, plastic insert pivots about a pivot axis which is disposed to be adjacent said first external fixator frame member.
- 24. An angular distraction apparatus as recited in claim 21, wherein said pivotable, plastic insert pivots about a pivot axis which is disposed to be adjacent said second external fixator frame member.
- 25. An angular distraction apparatus for an external fixation device used to rigidly immobilize a bone fracture during angular distraction of the bone segments, comprising:
- first pivotable connector means for connecting to a first external fixator frame member and providing a first pivotable connection;
- second pivotable connector means for connecting to a second external fixator frame member and providing a second pivotable connection;
- pivotable spacer means for pivotally connecting to and separating said first and second external fixator frame members; and
- distractor means including first and second portions for connecting to said first and second pivotable connections of said first and second pivotable connector means, respectively;
- wherein said distractor means, said first and second pivotable connector means and said pivotable spacer means connected together are further for rigidly and adjustably disposing said second external fixator frame member at an angular orientation with respect to said first external fixator frame member and for adjusting said angular orientation;
- wherein said distractor means, said first and second pivotable connector means and said pivotable spacer means connected together are still further for connecting to said first and second external fixator frame members and forming a rigid structure with a rigidity which is maintained during said adjusting of said angular orientation;
- wherein said distractor means comprises a single-threaded, rotatable rod which is rotatively engaged with said first pivotable connector means and threadedly engaged with said second pivotable connector means;
- wherein said distractor means further comprises a knob assembly which is engaged with said rotatable rod; and
- wherein said knob assembly comprises a knob and a spring, and wherein said spring urges said knob against said first pivotable connector means in a selectively interlocking relationship therewith.
- 26. An angular distraction apparatus for an external fixation device used to rigidly immobilize a bone fracture during angular distraction of the bone segments, comprising:
- a first pivotable connector which connects to a first external fixator frame member and provides a first pivotable connection;
- a second pivotable connector which connects to a second external fixator frame member and provides a second pivotable connection;
- a pivotable spacer which pivotally connects to and separates said first and second external fixator frame members; and
- a distractor including first and second portions which connect to said first and second pivotable connections of said first and second pivotable connectors, respectively;
- wherein said distractor, said first and second pivotable connectors and said pivotable spacer connected together further rigidly and adjustably dispose said second external fixator frame member at an angular orientation with respect to said first external fixator frame member for adjusting said angular orientation;
- wherein said distractor, said first and second pivotable connectors and said pivotable spacer connected together still further connect to said first and second external fixator frame members to form a rigid structure with a rigidity which is maintained during said adjusting of said angular orientation;
- wherein said distractor comprises a single-threaded, rotatable rod which is rotatively engaged with said first pivotable connector and threadedly engaged with said second pivotable connector;
- wherein said distractor further comprises a knob assembly which is engaged with said rotatable rod; and
- wherein said knob assembly comprises a knob and a spring, and wherein said spring urges said knob against said first pivotable connector in a selectively interlocking relationship therewith.
