Claims
- 1. A distributed Raman amplification system comprising
a transmission fiber, and a pump laser coupled to said fiber, where the fiber and the pump laser are chosen so as to have characteristics which result in broadening of the DRBS spectrum.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein such characteristic of the fiber include a wavelength λo. at which dispersion in the fiber is zero, and such characteristic of the pump laser include the wavelength λp of the pump light.
- 3. The system of claim 2 wherein λs and λp lie on opposite sides of the wavelength λo.
- 4. The system of claim 3 wherein said fiber is a large effective area fiber.
- 5. The system of claim 3 wherein the pump light counterpropagates with respect to the signal.
- 6. The system of claim 2 wherein the pump bandwidth is larger than the signal bandwidth.
- 7. A Raman amplification system comprising:
a transmission fiber through which signal light of a wavelength λs propagates, and having zero dispersion at a wavelength λo; and a pump laser coupled to said fiber and producing pump light at a wavelength λp, where λp<λo<λs.
- 8. The system of claim 7 wherein the signal and pump frequencies vs and vp corresponding to λs and λp, respectively, are symmetrically positioned on opposite sides of the zero dispersion frequency v, corresponding to λo.
- 9. The system of claim 7 wherein the pump bandwidth is larger than the signal bandwidth.
- 10. The system of claim 7 wherein said transmission fiber has a large effective area.
- 11. The system of claim 8 wherein the pump light counterpropagates with respect to the signal.
- 12. The system of claim 1 wherein said system is a Raman amplification system for a WDM optical fiber communication system having a WDM channel spacing, and wherein said plump laser has a mode spacing that is less than the optical bandwidth of the signal channel.
- 13. The system of claim 8 wherein said system is a Raman amplification system for a WDM optical fiber communication system having a WDM channel spacing, and wherein said pump laser has a mode spacing which is less than the optical bandwidth of the signal channel.
- 14. The system of claim 1 wherein said system is a Raman amplification system for a WDM optical fiber communication system having a WDM channel spacing, and |mΔvpumo−nΔvsig| is less than or equal to BO only for|m| and |n| larger than Δvsig/BO, where m and n are non-zero integers, Δvpump is pump mode spacing, Δvsig is WDM channel spacing, and BO is optical bandwidth of the signal channel.
- 15. A distributed Raman amplification system comprising
a transmission fiber, and a source of pump light which propagates in said fiber, where the fiber and the pump light are chosen so as to have characteristics which result in broadening of the DRBS spectrum.
- 16. The system of claim 15 wherein the pump light is generated in said fiber through cascaded Raman amplification.
- 17. The system of claim 15 wherein the pump bandwidth is larger than the signal bandwidth.
- 18. The system of claim 15 wherein the pump light counterpropagates with respect to the signal.
- 19. The system of claim 15 wherein said system is a Raman amplification system for a WDM optical fiber communication system having a WDM channel spacing, and |mΔvpump−nΔvsig| is less than or equal to BO only for |m| and |n| larger than Δvsig/BO, where m and n are non-zero integers, Δvpump is pump mode spacing, Δvsig is WDM channel spacing, and BO is optical bandwidth of the signal channel.
