Claims
- 1. In a fuel injection pump having a fixed integral body with a plurality of distributor outlets and a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with one end face of the plunger facing toward the pumping chamber, rotary cam means rotatable about a cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, means for supplying intake charges of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phases, and a delivery system for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the improvement wherein a plurality of the plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; wherein the delivery system comprises a plurality of separate distributor passages in the fixed integral body, for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each having a distributor port in a distributor valve bore and connecting the distributor port to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for each respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in each distributor position thereof, opening the distributor port to the pumping chamber adjacent said one end face of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port and respective distributor passage, directly to the respective distributor outlet; wherein a plurality of the plungers serve as pumping plungers; and wherein the rotary cam means is operable during each pumping phase to actuate at least one of the pumping plungers to deliver a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber and to position a distributor valve in a distributor position thereof to deliver the high pressure charge of fuel via the respective distributor port and distributor passage to the respective distributor outlet.
- 2. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein the plunger bores are angularly spaced around and extend generally radially outwardly from the cam axis, and wherein the rotary cam means comprises annular cam means surrounding the plungers for actuating the pumping plungers radially inwardly during the pumping phases for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel.
- 3. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1, wherein all of the plungers serve as pumping plungers, wherein all of the plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence and wherein during each pumping phase, all of the plungers except the acting distributor valve are actuated by the cam means for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel for fuel injection.
- 4. A fuel injection pump according to claim 2 wherein the fixed integral body has a central valve bore coaxial with the cam axis, wherein the plunger bores extend radially inwardly to the central valve bore, and wherein the means for supplying intake charges of fuel to the pumping chamber comprises a valve member axially shiftable in the coaxial valve bore between open and closed axial positions thereof.
- 5. A fuel injection pump according to claim 4 wherein the plunger bores intersect at their inner ends to form ports in the fixed integral body interconnecting the plunger bores.
- 6. A fuel injection pump according to claim 5 wherein the pumping chamber in the fixed integral body is formed substantially entirely by the plunger bores.
- 7. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein the delivery system comprises two distributor passages for each distributor valve bore, having axially spaced distributor ports in the distributor valve bore, wherein each distributor valve has two axially spaced distributor positions for the two respective distributor ports, and wherein the cam means is operable to position the distributor valves in the distributor positions thereof in sequence.
- 8. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein less than all of the plungers serve as distributor valves and all of the plungers serve as pumping plungers.
- 9. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein all of the plungers serve as both distributor valves and pumping plungers.
- 10. A fuel injection pump according to claim 2 wherein the fixed integral body is a multiple part body comprising a distributor head having a generally cylindrical bore and a separate pump body with a generally cylindrical portion mounted within the generally cylindrical bore to form a generally cylindrical interface between the pump body and distributor head, wherein the distributor outlets are provided in the distributor head angularly spaced around said generally cylindrical bore, and wherein each distributor passage extends through said generally cylindrical interface between the respective distributor port and distributor outlet and provides continuous communication between the respective distributor port and distributor outlet.
- 11. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein each distributor valve has a peripheral annulus and an internal passage connecting the peripheral annulus to the pumping chamber adjacent said one end face of the distributor valve, each distributor valve, in each distributor position thereof, opening the respective distributor port to the pumping chamber via the peripheral annulus and internal passage of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore, the internal passage and peripheral annulus of the distributor valve and the distributor port and respective distributor passage, directly to the respective distributor outlet.
- 12. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein the cam means comprises recessed cam means for sequentially positioning the distributor valves in their distributor positions.
- 13. A fuel injection pump according to claim 2 wherein the annular cam means comprises a recessed cam section for sequentially positioning the distributor valves in their distributor positions.
- 14. A fuel injection pump according to claim 2 wherein the annular cam means comprises a raised cam section for sequentially positioning the distributor valves in their distributor positions.
- 15. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein each distributor passage provides continuous communication between the respective distributor port and respective distributor outlet.
- 16. A fuel injection pump according to claim 1 wherein the means for supplying intake charges of fuel to the pumping chamber comprises an electromagnetically operated valve.
- 17. In a fuel injection pump having a non-rotating pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores angularly spaced around and having axes extending generally radially outwardly from a cam axis, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with an inner end face of the plunger facing inwardly toward the pumping chamber, annular cam means surrounding the plungers and rotatable about the cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, a dual purpose valve member, valve actuating means for actuating the valve member for supplying intake charges of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phases and spilling fuel from the pumping chamber during the pumping phases, a plurality of distributor outlets and a delivery system for delivering a high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the improvement wherein the pumping chamber has at least four of said plunger bores, wherein a plurality of the plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; wherein the delivery system comprises separate and independent passage means for each distributor valve for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the separate and independent passage means for the plurality of distributor valves comprising a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for each respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in each distributor position thereof, opening the distributor port to the pumping chamber adjacent said inner end face of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; wherein the annular cam means is operable during each pumping phase to position one distributor valve in a distributor position thereof to distribute the high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet and to actuate at least two of the remaining plungers to deliver a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber; wherein the pump body has a coaxial valve bore, wherein the plunger bores extend radially inwardly to the valve bore, and wherein the dual purpose valve member is mounted in the valve bore between the inner ends of the plunger bores and is axially shiftable in the valve bore between open and closed axial positions thereof.
- 18. A fuel injection pump according to claim 17 wherein the pump body has an annular coaxial valve seat at one end of the valve bore, and wherein the dual purpose valve member has a sealing head at one end of the valve member for engagement with the annular valve seat and an internal coaxial bore having an end opening at said one end of the valve member.
- 19. A fuel injection pump according to claim 17 wherein the dual purpose valve member is a poppet valve member having a peripheral annulus for supplying fuel to and spilling fuel from the pumping chamber int he open position of the valve member, the peripheral annulus continuously overlapping at least some of the plunger bores as the valve member is axially shifted between its open and closed positions.
- 20. A fuel injection pump according to claim 17, wherein the pump body has a coaxial throughbore providing said valve bore and an annular coaxial valve seat at one end of the valve bore, wherein the dual purpose valve member has a sealing head at one end of the valve member for engagement with the annular valve seat, and wherein the valve actuating means comprises an electromagnetic actuator having a transverse armature fixed to the valve member at the other end of the valve member from the sealing head and a stator in axial alignment with the valve member and spaced axially outwardly from said other end of the valve member, the stator being operable when the electromagnetic actuator is energized to attract the armature and valve member in one axial direction toward the stator to axially shift the valve member to one of its said positions and spring means operable for axially shifting the valve member in the opposite axial direction to its other position when the electromagnetic actuator is deenergized.
- 21. A fuel injection pump having a non-rotating pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores angularly spaced around and having axes extending generally radially outwardly from a cam axis, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with an inner end face of the plunger facing inwardly toward the pumping chamber, annular cam means surrounding the plungers and rotatable about the cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, a plurality of the plungers serving as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; a dual purpose valve member, valve actuating means for actuating the valve member for supplying intake charges of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phases and spilling fuel from the pumping chamber during the pumping phases, a plurality of distributor outlets and a delivery system, comprising separate and independent passage means for each distributor valve, for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets, the separate and independent passage means for the plurality of distributor valves comprising a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for each respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in each distributor position thereof, opening the distributor port to the pumping chamber adjacent said inner end face of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; the annular cam means and plungers cooperating to distribute the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bores and distributor ports, directly to the distributor outlets; the pump body having a coaxial valve bore between the plunger bores, the plunger bores extending radially inwardly to the valve bore, and the dual purpose valve member being mounted in the valve bore between the inner ends of the plunger bores and being axially shiftable in the valve bore between open and closed axial positions thereof by the valve actuating means.
- 22. A fuel injection pump according to claim 21, wherein the dual purpose valve member has an internal coaxial bore having an end opening at one end of the valve member.
- 23. A fuel injection pump according to claim 21, wherein each plunger bore has a constant diameter and wherein the coaxial valve bore has a diameter greater than the diameter of each plunger bore.
- 24. A fuel injection pump according to claim 21, wherein the pump body has a coaxial throughbore providing the coaxial valve bore.
- 25. A fuel injection pump according to claim 21, wherein the pump comprises a distributor head having a bore coaxial with the annular cam means, wherein the pump body has a coaxial section received within the distributor head bore to provide a coaxial annular interface between the pump body and distributor head, wherein the distributor outlets are provided in the distributor head angularly spaced around the annular interface, and wherein the delivery system comprises connecting bores in the pump body and distributor head connecting the distributor ports to the distributor outlets respectively across the annular interface.
- 26. A fuel injection pump according to claim 21 further comprising a fuel supply pump and a supply chamber, adjacent one end of the valve member, connected to receive fuel continuously from the supply pump and to supply fuel to the pumping chamber in the open position of the valve member.
- 27. A fuel injection pump according to claim 21, wherein the separate and independent passage means for each distributor valve comprise a peripheral annulus and an internal passage connecting the peripheral annulus to the pumping chamber adjacent the inner end face of the distributor valve, each distributor valve, in each distributor position thereof, opening the respective distributor port to the pumping chamber via the peripheral annulus and internal passage of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore, the internal passage and peripheral annulus of the distributor valve and the distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet.
- 28. In a fuel injection pump having a non-rotating pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores angularly spaced around and having axes extending generally radially outwardly from a cam axis, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with an inner end face of the plunger facing inwardly toward the pumping chamber, annular cam means surrounding the plungers and rotatable about the cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, a valve member, actuating means for selectively actuating the valve member for supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phase, a plurality of distributor outlets and a delivery system for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the improvement wherein the pumping chamber has a t least four plunger bores and wherein at least four plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; wherein the delivery system comprises separate passage means for each distributor valve, for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets, the separate passage means for the distributor valves comprising a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a different distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for the respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in the distributor position thereof, opening the distributor port directly to the pumping chamber adjacent the inner end face of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; wherein the annular cam means and plungers cooperate to distribute the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bores and distributor ports, directly to the distributor outlets in sequence; wherein the pump body has a coaxial throughbore providing a coaxial valve bore between the plunger bores, and wherein the valve member is axially shiftable in the valve bore between open and closed axial positions thereof by the valve actuating means.
- 29. In a fuel injection pump having a non-rotating pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with one end face of the plunger facing toward the pumping chamber, rotary cam means rotatable about a cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, valve means for supplying intake charges of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phases, a plurality of distributor outlets and a delivery system for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the improvement wherein a plurality of the plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; wherein the delivery system comprises a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a different distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for the respective distributor port and, in its distributor position, at least partly uncovering the distributor port at said one end face of the distributor valve to open the port to the pumping chamber for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; wherein a plurality of the plungers serve as pumping plungers; and wherein the rotary cam means is operable during each pumping phase to actuate a plurality of the pumping plungers to deliver a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber and to position one distributor valve in the distributor position thereof to distribute the high pressure charge of fuel to the respective distributor outlet.
- 30. A fuel injection pump according to claim 29, wherein the rotary cam means is mounted radially inwardly of the plungers for actuating the plungers outwardly during the pumping phases for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel and wherein the pumping chamber in the pump body comprises a passage connecting the outer ends of the plunger bores.
- 31. A fuel injection pump having a non-rotating pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores angularly spaced around and having axes extending generally radially outwardly from a cam axis, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with an inner end face of the plunger facing inwardly toward the pumping chamber, annular cam means surrounding the plungers and rotatable about the cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber an delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, a plurality of distributor outlets, the plungers serving as distributor valves in sequence connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a different distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for the respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in the distributor position thereof, at least partly uncovering the distributor port at said inner end face of the distributor valve to open the port to the pumping chamber for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; the annular cam means and plungers cooperating to distribute the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bores and distributor ports, directly to the distributor outlets; the pump body having a coaxial through bore providing a valve bore between the plunger bores, a valve member mounted in the valve bore between the plunger bores and axially shiftable in the valve bore between open and closed axial positions thereof; and valve actuating means for selectively axially shifting the valve member to its open position for supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber.
- 32. A fuel injection pump according to claim 31, wherein the pump comprises a distributor head having a cylindrical bore coaxial with the annular cam means, wherein the pump body has an outer coaxial cylindrical surface received within the distributor head bore to provide a coaxial, cylindrical interface between the pump body and distributor head wherein the distributor outlets are provided in the distributor head angularly spaced around the cylindrical interface, and wherein the delivery system comprises connecting bores in the pump body and distributor head connecting the distributor ports to the distributor outlets respectively across the cylindrical interface.
- 33. In a fuel injection pump having a pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores angularly spaced around and having axes extending generally radially outwardly from a cam axis, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with an inner end face of the plunger facing inwardly toward the pumping chamber, annular cam means surrounding the plungers and rotatable about the cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, valve means selectively operable for supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phase and spilling fuel from the pumping chamber during the pumping phase, a plurality of distributor outlets and a delivery system for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the improvement wherein a plurality of the plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; wherein the delivery system comprises a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for each respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in each distributor position thereof, opening the distributor port to the pumping chamber adjacent said inner end face of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; wherein the annular cam means and plungers cooperate to distribute the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bores and distributor ports, directly to the distributor outlets; wherein the pump body has a coaxial bore forming a valve bore between the plunger bores, wherein the plunger bores extend radially inwardly to the valve bore, and wherein the valve means comprises a valve member mounted in the valve bore and axially shiftable in the valve bore between open and closed axial positions thereof.
- 34. In a fuel injection pump having a fixed pump body with a pumping chamber with a plurality of plunger bores, a plunger mounted in each plunger bore for reciprocation, with one end face of the plunger facing toward the pumping chamber, rotary cam means rotatable about a cam axis for reciprocating the plungers to provide alternating intake and pumping phases of operation for respectively supplying an intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber and delivering a charge of fuel from the pumping chamber at high pressure for fuel injection, valve means for supplying intake charge of fuel to the pumping chamber during the intake phases, a plurality of distributor outlets and a delivery system for delivering the high pressure charges of fuel from the pumping chamber to the distributor outlets; the improvement wherein the pumping chamber has at least four of said plunger bores, wherein all of the plungers serve as distributor valves in sequence, connecting the distributor outlets in sequence directly to the pumping chamber; wherein the delivery system comprises a plurality of distributor ports for the plurality of distributor outlets respectively, each in a distributor valve bore, for connecting the bore to the respective distributor outlet; each distributor valve having a distributor position for each respective distributor port and forming the sole means, in each distributor position thereof, opening the distributor port to the pumping chamber at said one end face of the distributor valve for connecting the respective distributor outlet directly to the pumping chamber for delivering a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber, via the distributor valve bore and distributor port, directly to the respective distributor outlet; wherein all of the plungers serve as pumping plungers; and wherein the rotary cam means is operable during each pumping phase to actuate a plurality of the pumping plungers to deliver a high pressure charge of fuel from the pumping chamber and to position one distributor valve in a distributor position thereof to distribute the high pressure charge of fuel to the respective distributor outlet.
