Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention is related to a kit that is configured to assist in the repair of a door jamb after hinges or strikers have been removed.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Door jambs often need repair work where damage is incurred by the removal of hinges and the resulting exposed holes on the doorjamb. When the hinges are removed the door jamb is left with holes that need to be repaired to create a smooth surface. Moreover, when a wooden door is removed or replaced, extensive work on the hinges becomes an impending reality. It would therefore be advantageous to have a complete kit to provide the necessary tools and materials to effectively repair the doorjamb, an in particular, wood door jamb s.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Exemplary embodiments disclosed herein describe a do-it-yourself (DIY) door jamb repair kit including a scraper, a finishing block, a door jamb insert, a door jamb plug and glue. The door jamb insert is inserted into a hinge mortise opening and the door jamb insert has a same shape as a hinge leaf. The door jamb plug attaches to a striker mortise opening and the door jamb plug has a same shape as an engraved area of the striker mortise opening. The glue attaches the door jamb insert to the outer perimeter of the hinge mortise opening, and attaches the door jamb plug to the engraved area of the striker mortise opening.

In some exemplary embodiments, the door jamb insert is made of wood.

In some exemplary embodiments, the door jamb plug is made of wood.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The disclosure will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which exemplary embodiments of the disclosure are shown. This disclosure may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the exemplary embodiments set forth herein. It will be apparent to persons skilled in the relevant art that various changes in form and detail can be made to various embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure. Thus, the breadth and scope of the present disclosure should not be limited by any of the above-described exemplary embodiments but should be defined only in accordance with the following claims and their equivalents.

The present invention relates to a do-it-yourself (DIY) door jamb repair kit that includes various components to provide an effective toolkit to allow for the repair of a door jamb. A door jamb is the flat surface that runs vertically up either side of a door frame. The door jamb is where hinges are placed to hang the door, as well as a striker plate on the opposite door jamb which helps to open, close and lock your door. The striker is the part of a locking unit which is inserted in the door frame. It helps to keep the door closed. When the dead bolt and the bolt is pushed into the hole of the striker, the door keeps closed. When the hinges and striker are removed from a respective door jamb, the respective door jamb is left with an exposed mortise opening. The disclosed DIY kit allows an individual to cover an exposed mortise opening to return the door jamb as closely as possible to its original condition prior to being mortised. It should be noted that the terms doorjamb and door jamb have been used interchangeably throughout the disclosure.

Turning to FIG. 1, a doorway 40 is depicted, and the doorway includes a first door jamb 41a, a second door jamb 41b, and a series of openings 50, 51, and 52 (i.e., hinge mortise openings) along the length of the first door jamb 41a, and an opening 54 (i.e., striker mortise opening) along the length of the second door jamb 41b are shown. The openings 50, 51, 52 are associated with hinges that were placed on doorjamb 41a to support door 45, and opening 54 is associated with a lock (e.g., bolt lock, doorknob bolt, etc.) that was placed on door jamb 41b to also support door 45, as shown in FIG. 1.

Once door 45 is removed and its hinges are removed, the openings 50, 51, 52 (i.e., hinge mortise opening) are fully exposed, as shown in FIG. 2A. These exposed openings 50, 51, 52 are a distraction and unattractive unless a door is placed back into the openings through the use of hinges. Also, the opening 54 (i.e., striker mortise opening) in door jamb 41b is exposed when the door 45 is removed. This is more clearly shown in FIG. 2b. These openings require repair if a user desires to remove a door from a doorway.

The present invention supplies a do-it-yourself (DIY) kit, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, that allows untrained individuals to repair the openings (e.g., 50, 51, 52 and 54), in residential interior wood doors without the direct aid of professionals or certified experts. The kit allows an individual to repair the openings with a smooth surface on each and every respective doorjamb. The door jambs 41a and 41b are made of wood and are designed to interface with a wood door. Moreover, door jambs 41a and 41b are interior door jambs (i.e., they are the interior sides of a door frame).

The DIY kit shown in FIG. 3 includes a door jamb insert 22 for placement into a hinge mortise opening and a door jamb plug 25 for covering a striker (e.g., bolt lock) opening. The door jamb plug 25 fits over the engraved area of the striker opening. The door jamb insert 22 and the door jamb plug 25 are made of out of wood. The door jamb insert 22 and the door jamb plug 25 are configured to attach to/along the outer perimeter of a corresponding hinge mortise opening and striker mortise opening respectively. The door jamb insert 22 is configured in the same shape as the hinge mortise opening. Typically, the hinge mortise opening has the same shape as the hinge leaf which will occupy the space of the hinge mortise opening. The hinge mortise opening has a particular depth d (i.e., vertical depth below the surface of the outer edge of the doorjamb) and the door jamb insert 22 has a same depth (i.e., thickness) as the hinge mortise opening. The door jamb insert 25 is configured in the same shape as the engraved area of the striker opening. The door jamb insert 25 has a smaller thickness than door jamb insert 22.

Moreover, included with the DIY kit is a finishing block 100, shown in FIG. 4. The doorjamb inserts 22 are placed into the hinge openings, as shown in FIG. 5. The door jamb inserts 22 are provided to seal the opening and, therefore, are glued into place using glue, as shown in FIG. 9. A scraper 35 with blade edge 37, shown in FIG. 10, is used in conjunction with the glue to smooth out the surface of the doorjamb once the door jamb inserts 22 are in place, as shown in FIG. 7. So, a user would apply glue to each door jamb insert 22 and then insert the door jamb insert into one of the openings (i.e., 50, 51 and 52) along doorjamb 41a.

The glue attaches the door jamb insert 22 to the outer perimeter of the hinge mortise opening, and attaches the door jamb plug 25 to the engraved area of the striker mortise opening.

The end result is shown in FIG. 7. A similar application is provided for door jamb plug 25 that covers the lock opening 54, shown in FIG. 6. The door jamb plug 25 is glued into place and provides a smooth surface for doorjamb 41b. Once the door jamb inserts 22 and the door jamb plug are glued in place and any excess glue removed, a user has a complete smooth surface for the doorjamb that could be painted or otherwise decorated or finished as desired.
