Claims
- 1. In an imprinter having printing means comprising a rotary printing unit, said rotary printing unit including at least two banks of printing members, said banks being each respectively disposed at different angular locations about the axis of rotation of said rotary printing unit, each printing member having a plurality of type faces any one of which is adapted to be selected for printing; means for selecting any one of said type faces of each printing member for printing; a cylindrical platen cooperable with said banks of printing members and defining therewith a printing nip; means for feeding to said printing nip a web of label material to be printed on by said type faces, said web of label material comprising labels carrying a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive, said web of label material further comprising a carrier strip to which said labels are releasably secured by said pressure sensitive adhesive; said cylindrical platen comprising:
- an exterior portion;
- an underlying portion of elastomeric material;
- said exterior portion being made of a synthetic resinous material, and being thinner and harder than said underlying elastomeric material portion, said synthetic resinous exterior portion presenting an outermost surface which is substantially smooth and glossy and substantially non-adherent to said pressure sensitive adhesive carried by said labels;
- whereby said synthetic resinous exterior portion minimizes and retards deposition of the pressure sensitive adhesive from the labels onto the platen.
- 2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein:
- said exterior portion of said platen comprises an outermost sleeve of said platen;
- said sleeve being mounted on said underlying portion of elastomeric material.
- 3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein:
- the Shore A Durometer hardnesses of said sleeve and said underlying portion are respectively about 97 and about 78.
- 4. The combination according to claim 1, wherein:
- said rotary printing unit and said platen are respectively mounted for rotation about substantially parallel axes of rotation.
- 5. The combination according to claim 4, wherein:
- the axis of rotation of said platen is substantially fixed during operation of said printing members to print on said labels.
- 6. The combination according to claim 5, including:
- means for rotating said platen during at least the time that said printing members print on said labels.
- 7. The combination according to claim 1, wherein:
- said synthetic resinous material of which said exterior portion of said platen is made is a tetrafluoroethylene fluorocarbon resin.
- 8. The combination according to claim 7, wherein:
- said elastomeric underlying portion of said platen is made of rubber.
- 9. The combination according to claim 1, wherein:
- said two banks of printing members each comprises a plurality of printing wheels, each of said banks of printing wheels being mounted for rotation about an axis of rotation, the respective axes of rotation for said banks of printing wheels being spaced from one another, said axes of rotation being provided on and movable with said rotary printing unit.
