Claims
- 1. A clear ice maker having a cabinet with interior walls and a rear wall defining an upper ice making portion and a lower bin portion, comprising:
- an evaporator plate assembly mounted adjacent a wall in the upper ice making portion of the cabinet, said plate assembly including
- a vertically mounted metal evaporator plate having pockets open to the interior of the cabinet;
- a water distributor disposed above the plate to distribute a flow of water over all of the plate pockets, and
- an evaporator of a refrigeration system mounted to the plate;
- a water sump mounted in the upper portion of the cabinet and including a trough portion disposed beneath the evaporator plate assembly;
- a water pump disposed in the sump to recirculate water from the sump to the water distributor; and
- an overflow pipe with an open top disposed in the sump and operatively connected to a drain, the top of the overflow pipe establishing the level of water in the sump.
- 2. A clear ice maker according to claim 1, wherein the overflow pipe leads to a drain in the lower bin portion.
- 3. A clear ice maker having a cabinet with interior side walls and a rear wall defining an upper ice making portion and a lower bin portion, comprising:
- an evaporator plate assembly mounted adjacent a wall in the upper ice making portion of the cabinet, said plate assembly including
- a vertically mounted metal evaporator plate having pockets open to the interior of the cabinet;
- a water distributor disposed above the plate to distribute a flow of water over all of the plate pockets, and
- an evaporator of a refrigeration system mounted to the plate;
- a water sump mounted in the upper portion of the cabinet and including a trough portion disposed beneath the evaporator plate assembly;
- a water pump disposed in the sump to recirculate water from the sump to the water distributor;
- the metal evaporator plate having a rear wall against which the evaporator is mounted, lateral edges projecting forward from the rear wall, and horizontal and vertical partitions extending from the rear wall and between the edges to define pockets;
- a non-metallic shroud surrounding the plate, the shroud having a continuous bulbous edge that engulfs the edges of the plate, the shroud further including a roof disposed above the plate and sloping toward the front of the plate; and
- the water distributor is mounted on the roof of the shroud.
- 4. A clear ice maker according to claim 3, wherein the distributor has a floor above the roof of the shroud with upright barriers disposed between the front of the floor and a rear edge of the floor, the barriers distributing water deposited at the front of the floor to fall uniformly over the rear edge and onto the roof of the shroud.
- 5. A clear ice maker according to claim 3, wherein the shroud includes a downwardly extending bib portion having deflector fins aligned with the centers of the pockets to deflect ice cubes leaving the pockets over the trough portion of the sump.
- 6. An evaporator plate assembly according to claim 3, wherein the shroud includes mounting portions extending laterally from opposite sides of the plate and attached to the one side wall of the cabinet.
- 7. A clear ice maker according to claim 2, wherein the drain leads to an overflow collector including a pump.
- 8. An evaporator plate assembly for a clear ice maker, comprising:
- a metal evaporator plate having a rear wall, lateral edges projecting forward from the rear wall, and horizontal and vertical partitions extending from the rear wall and between the edges to define pockets;
- a non-metallic shroud surrounding the rear wall and edges of the plate, the shroud having a continuous bulbous edge that engulfs the edges of the plate;
- the shroud further including a roof disposed above the plate and sloping toward the front of the plate; and
- a water distributor mounted on the roof of the shroud.
- 9. An evaporator plate assembly as in claim 8, wherein the water distributor has a floor above the roof of the shroud with upright barriers disposed between a well at the front of the floor and a rear edge of the floor, the barriers distributing water deposited at the well to fall uniformly over the rear edge and onto the roof of the shroud.
- 10. An evaporator plate assembly according to claim 8, wherein the shroud includes a downwardly extending bib portion having deflector fins aligned with the centers of the pockets.
- 11. An evaporator plate assembly according to claim 8, wherein the shroud includes mounting portions extending laterally from opposite sides of the plate.
- 12. An evaporator plate assembly according to claim 8, together with an evaporator mounted against the rear wall of the plate.
