Claims
- 1. A latching apparatus for releasably latching a first element to a second element, said apparatus comprising:
- a post member for attachment to a first element, wherein said post member includes, at least,
- a first axially extending arcuate surface define by a first radius from a central axis of said post member, and
- a second axially extending surface arranged in succession circumferentially about said post member and defined by at least one radius, each of said at least one radius being smaller than said first radius of said first surface;
- a collar assembly for attachment to a second element, said collar assembly comprising
- an outer sleeve,
- an inner sleeve defining a cylindrical passage for receipt of said post member, and
- a detention means for preventing movement of said post member in at least one axial direction relative to said collar assembly,
- wherein the first element becomes releasably latched to the second element upon operation of said detention means in preventing movement of said post member in at least one axially direction relative to said collar assembly, wherein interaction between said detention means and said first axially extending arcuate surface prevents movement of said post member is one axial direction relative to said collar assembly, and wherein interaction between said detention means and said second axially extending surface allows movement of said post member in both directions; and
- a control means for selectively obviating the effect of said detention means.
- 2. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein said control means includes, at least, rotational means connected to said inner sleeve for angularly rotating said inner sleeve with respect to said post member to selectively obviate the effect of said detention means.
- 3. Apparatus of claim 2, wherein said rotational means includes, at least,
- an actuator means for receiving and transferring rotational force, and
- a linkage means connected between said actuator means and said inner sleeve for transferring rotational force from said actuator means to said inner sleeve.
- 4. Apparatus of claim 3, wherein said actuator means includes, at least, a cylinder lock with an axial shaft, and wherein said linkage means includes, at least, a pin assembly connected perpendicularly to said axial shaft and to said inner sleeve.
- 5. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein said control means includes, at least, rotational means connected to said post member for angularly rotating said post member with respect to said inner sleeve to selectively obviate the effect of said detention means.
- 6. Apparatus of claim 5, wherein said rotational means includes, at least,
- an actuator means for receiving and transferring rotational force, and
- a linkage means connected between said actuator means and said post member for transferring rotational force from said actuator means to said post member.
- 7. Apparatus of claim 6, wherein said actuator means includes, at least, a cylinder lock with an axial shaft.
- 8. A latching apparatus for releasably latching a first element to a second element, said apparatus comprising:
- a post member for attachment to a first element;
- a collar assembly for attachment to a second element, said collar assembly comprising
- an outer sleeve,
- an inner sleeve defining a cylindrical passage for receipt of said post member and at least one radial opening into said cylindrical passage, and
- a detention means for preventing movement of said post member in at least one axial direction relative to said collar assembly, said detention means including at least one ball located at least partially within said at least one radial opening and a guiding means associated with said outer sleeve for guiding said at least one ball at least partially into said cylindrical passage,
- wherein the first element becomes releasably latched to the second element upon operation of said detention means in preventing movement of said post member in at least one axial direction relative to said collar assembly; and
- a control means for selectively obviating the effect of said detention means, wherein said control means includes, at least, rotational means connected to said collar assembly for relative angular rotation between said inner sleeve and said outer sleeve to selectively obviate the effect of said detention means.
- 9. Apparatus of claim 8, wherein said rotational means is connected to said inner sleeve and includes, at least,
- an actuator means for receiving and transferring rotational force, and
- a linkage means connected between said actuator means and said inner sleeve for transferring rotational force from said actuator means to said inner sleeve.
- 10. Apparatus of claim 9, wherein said actuator means includes, at least, a cylinder lock with an axial shaft, and wherein said linkage means includes, at least, a pin assembly connected perpendicularly to said axial shaft and to said inner shell.
- 11. A latching apparatus for releasably latching a first element to a second element, said apparatus comprising:
- a post member for attachment to a first element;
- a collar assembly for attachment to a second element, said collar assembly comprising
- an outer sleeve,
- an inner sleeve defining a cylindrical passage for receipt of said post member, and
- a detention means for preventing movement of said post member in at least one axial direction relative to said collar assembly,
- wherein the first element becomes releasably latched to the second element upon operation of said detention means in preventing movement of said post member in at least one axial direction relative to said collar assembly; and
- a control means for selectively obviating the effect of said detention means, wherein said control means includes, at least, an axial means connected to said collar assembly for effecting relative axial movement between said inner sleeve and said outer sleeve to selectively obviate the effect of said detention means, said axial means including, at least,
- a receiving means for receiving and transferring a releasing force from a user, and
- a linkage means connected between said receiving means and said collar assembly for effecting relative axial movement between said inner sleeve and said outer sleeve.
- 12. Apparatus of claim 11, wherein said linkage means includes a re-directional means for receiving a rotational releasing force from said receiving means, converting the rotational releasing force into an axial force, and transferring the axial force to said inner sleeve.
- 13. Apparatus of claim 12, wherein said receiving means includes, at least, a cylinder lock which includes, at least, an axial shaft, and wherein said linkage means includes, at least, a cam surface connected to said axial shaft and a pin number contacting said cam surface and connected to said inner shell.
- 14. A latching apparatus comprising:
- a post member defining, at least, an axially extending, arcuate surface at a first radius from a central axis of said post member;
- a collar assembly including, at least, a passage for accepting said post member therein, and a ball and cam means for effecting a frictional grip on said arcuate surface when said post member is at least partially within said passage, thus preventing, without excessive force, removal of said post member from said passage of said collar assembly; and
- a lock means for selectively releasing said frictional grip between said post member and said collar assembly, thus facilitating removal of said post member from said passage of said collar assembly.
- 15. A latching apparatus comprising:
- a rigid bar member comprising, at least, a first segment comprising, at least, an axially extending first surface and an axially extending second surface arranged in succession circumferentially about said bar member;
- a collar portion comprising, at least,
- a cylindrical shell defining as axial passage for receipt of a bar member and including, at least, an outwardly extending flange,
- an outer member positioned outside and coaxial with said cylindrical shell and defining a flange cavity wherein said flange is confined, and
- a protruding means for protrusion into said axial passage;
- said bar member being insertable into said passage of said collar portion, said collar portion and said bar member being capable of relative angular movement when said bar member is within said passage, said protruding means being capable of cooperating with said first surface of said bar member to create a gripping action which resists relative axial movement between said bar member and said collar portion in at least one axial direction, and said protruding means being capable of cooperating with said second surface of said bar member to weaken a gripping action created by cooperation between said first surface and said protruding means; and
- a lock means for selectively affecting said gripping action between said bar member and said collar portion.
