Claims
- 1. A lock for a door having a recess formed in the end thereof intermediate its top and bottom margins comprising: a U-shaped member having a pair of spaced sides and an end wall interconnecting the sides; means engageable with the sides for mounting the member on the door with the sides and end wall enclosing said recess, said end wall having an opening therethrough; a lock bolt; means on the inner surfaces of the sides for mounting the lock bolt in the space therebetween for movement from an extended, locked position with the end of the lock bolt extending through and projecting laterally from the outer face of said end wall to a retracted, unlocked position with said one end of the lock bolt inwardly of the outer face of the end wall; a flat plate accessible from either side of said member and extending into the space between the sides for moving the lock bolt from said extended position to said retracted position, each side having a slot therethrough for shiftably receiving the plate, the slots of said sides being horizontally aligned with each other, said lock bolt having a slot therethrough defining an inclined edge extending transversely of the path of travel of said lock bolt, said plate being adjacent to the lock bolt and having a pin thereon within the space between the sides, the pin extending into the slot in the lock bolt and normally engaging said inclined edge means biasing said lock bolt toward said extended position; and means shiftably mounted on at least one of the sides within said space for releasably holding said lock bolt in said extended position.
- 2. A lock as set forth in claim 1, wherein said lock bolt has an inner end face, said holding means including an arm, means mounting one end of said arm within said space for movement from a first position engaging said inner end face to a second position spaced therefrom, said arm being operable to prevent movement of said lock bolt out of said extended position when the arm is in said first position.
- 3. A lock as set forth in claim 2, wherein said mounting means includes a shaft mounted on at least one of said sides, and including a manually rotatable knob coupled to said shaft exteriorly of one of said sides, and a key-actuated cylinder lock coupled to the shaft and having a key-receiving slot exteriorly of the other side.
- 4. A lock for a door having a recess formed in the end thereof intermediate its top and bottom margins comprising: a U-shaped member having a pair of spaced sides and an end wall interconnecting the sides; means engageable with the sides for mounting the member on the door with the sides and end wall enclosing said recess, said end wall having an opening therethrough; a lock bolt; means on the inner surfaces of the sides for mounting the lock bolt in the space therebetween for movement from an extended, locked position with the end of the lock bolt extending through and projecting laterally from the outer face of said end wall to a retracted, unlocked position with said one end of the lock bolt inwardly of the outer face of the end wall; means accessible from either side of said member and extending into the space between the sides for moving the lock bolt from said extended position to said retracted position; means biasing said lock bolt toward said extended position; and means shiftably mounted on at least one of the sides within said space for releasably holding said lock bolt in said extended position; and a door strike having means for mounting the same on a door jamb, said door strike having a projection for extending laterally from the door jamb, the outer end of the lock bolt being engageable with said projection when the door strike is mounted on the door jamb and when the lock bolt is in its extended position.
- 5. A lock as set forth in claim 4, wherein said sides of the member have upper and lower margins adapted to be placed near an end face of a door, said end wall of the member being spaced laterally of the upper and lower margins of the member to present a recess for receiving a door strike mounted on a door jamb without mortising the latter.
