Claims
- 1. In a dot printer, a combination comprising a plurality of adjacent printing plungers; means mounting said plungers for reciprocation in a working direction along respective upright paths; means normally retaining each of said plungers in a stationary neutral rest position; drive means, including a drive element located laterally adjacent to and separate from said plungers and oscillating continuously in said working direction along said paths between respective end positions; and a plurality of selectively activatable couplers arranged on said oscillating drive element separately from said plungers and said mounting means, said couplers being each operative for coupling, when activated, one of said plungers to said drive element while the latter oscillates so that the thus coupled one plunger is reciprocated by the drive element until the respective coupler is subsequently deactivated and said one plunger returns to the neutral rest position thereof.
- 2. A combination as defined in claim 1, wherein each of said plungers has an axis, said mounting means being arranged for mounting said plungers for reciprocation in an axial direction corresponding to said working direction, said drive element being located radially adjacent to said plungers and oscillating continuously in said working direction axially of said plunger, and said couplers being arranged for coupling one of said plungers to said drive element in a radial direction.
- 3. A combination as defined in claim 1, wherein said couplers correspond in number to said plungers and are all mounted on said oscillating element for movement with the same.
- 4. A combination as defined in claim 1, said retaining means comprising retaining elements which retain the respective plungers in said neutral rest position with a force which is smaller than the force exerted upon the plungers by said drive means when the plungers are coupled to the same by said couplers.
- 5. A combination as defined in claim 1, said retaining means comprising retaining elements which are disengageable from the respective plungers when said couplers couple the same to said drive means, and which are engageable with the plungers when the couplers uncouple the same from said drive means.
- 6. A combination as defined in claim 1, said drive element including a working beam mounted for said oscillating movement, and said couplers for each of said plungers all being mounted on said working beam.
- 7. A combination as defined in claim 6; wherein webs to be printed are supported in a working plane which is located beneath said plungers; and wherein said plungers, said means and said couplers are movable over and with reference to said working plane.
- 8. A combination as defined in claim 1, said plungers being at least in part of magnetizable material; and wherein said couplers comprise selectively energizable electromagnets which, when energized, magnetically attract said material.
- 9. A combination as defined in claim 1, each of said couplers having an engaging portion which is movable into and out of entraining engagement with the respective plunger.
- 10. A combination as defined in claim 1, said drive means including means for imparting said oscillating movement to said drive element.
- 11. A combination as defined in claim 10, said imparting means comprising a high-frequency vibrator connected to said drive element.
- 12. A combination as defined in claim 10, said imparting means comprising a crank drive connected to said drive element.
- 13. A combination as defined in claim 10, said imparting means comprising an eccentric drive connected to said drive element.
- 14. A combination as defined in claim 1; and further comprising biasing means yieldably resisting movement of said drive means in said direction.
- 15. A combination as defined in claim 1, said mounting means including for each of said plungers a mounting member; and said retaining means comprising for each of said plungers an elastically deflectable element connected to the respective plunger and said mounting member.
- 16. A combination as defined in claim 1, wherein said retaining means comprises an advanceable and retractable engaging element which is movable into and out of a retaining position in which it engages the respective plunger.
- 17. A combination as defined in claim 1, said mounting means comprising a mounting element, and said retaining means all being mounted on said mounting element.
- 18. A combination as defined in claim 1, said mounting means being mounted to be raised and lowered lengthwise of said paths.
- 19. A combination as defined in claim 1, said plungers and all of said means together forming a printing unit.
- 20. A combination as defined in claim 1, said retaining means comprising for each plunger a retaining element having portions which are frictionally engageable with the plunger for retaining the same in said neutral rest position.
- 21. A combination as defined in claim 1; and further comprising means for scanning a pattern to be printed and for operating said coupling means as a function of the scanned pattern.
