Claims
- 1. A method of making a mat comprised of fiber glass adapted to reinforce a polymeric matrix material, the method comprising supplying to a needling station a mat comprising fiber glass having a first major surface and a second major surface, performing a first needling operation on the mat from the first major surface at a first density of needle punches per unit area, and performing a second needling operation on the mat from the second major surface at a second density of needle punches per unit area greater than said first density.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said first needling operation and second needling operation are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said first needling operation and second needling operation are performed substantially sequentially.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the needle construction of at least some of the needles used in the first needling operation are different in construction from the needles used in the second needling operation.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the second density is at least 25 percent greater than the first density.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein in the first needling operation the needles are passed through the mat a distance different from that in the second needling operation.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the distance of needle penetration in the first needling operation is greater than that in the second needling operation.
