Claims
- 1. A process for operating a fuel cell system comprising:reforming a hydrocarbon to produce a reformate comprising H2 and CO as a fuel stream for said fuel cell system; reacting said reformate with steam in the presence of a catalyst in a water-gas-shift reactor to reduce the CO content of said reformate, said catalyst having an upstream portion that reduces the CO content in said reformate to less than about 2% by volume and a downstream portion that receives said reformate from said upstream portion and further reduces the CO content thereof; and injecting oxygen into said downstream portion in order to further reduce the CO content in the reformate whereby the amount of catalyst required to effect said further CO reduction in the reformate is reduced.
- 2. The process according to claim 1 wherein said oxygen is injected into said downstream portion so as to provide a reformate and oxygen mixture therein comprising less than about 1% by volume of oxygen in the mixture.
