Claims
- 1. A method of heat-treating comprising:
- providing a substantially continuous blank;
- producing laser radiation;
- splitting said radiation into beams which do not intersect the axis of said blank;
- forming in a plane normal to said blank beams of laser radiation having substantially zero power density from the axis of said blank to a prescribed radial position of said blank;
- heating the blank with said beam of laser radiation; and
- drawing said blank along the axis thereof.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising heating said blank to the drawing temperature of the materials thereof; and
- drawing the heated blank to reduce the cross-sectional area thereof to form an optical waveguide.
- 3. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said beams of laser radiation are circumferential with substantially zero power density from the axis of said blank to a prescribed radial position and with substantially uniform power density from said radial position to a greater radial position.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said beams of laser radiation have a power density distribution with substantially zero power at the axis of said blank and with a substantially Gaussian power distribution about a prescribed radius of said blank.
- 5. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising forming said beams of laser radiation with a prescribed power density distribution as a function of axial position along said blank.
