Claims
- 1. An earth-boring bit, comprising:
a bit body; a plurality of substantially diamond-free insert support members extending outwardly from said body; and at least one diamond-impregnated insert supported in one of said support members, said insert extending outwardly from said support member and forming a primary cutting structure.
- 2. The bit according to claim 1 wherein the bit body comprises tungsten carbide matrix.
- 3. The bit according to claim 1 wherein the bit body comprises diamond-impregnated tungsten carbide matrix.
- 4. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are fabricated from the same material as said bit body.
- 5. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are fabricated from a different material from said bit body.
- 6. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are fabricated from a material selected from the group consisting of alumina, titanium carbide, silicon carbide, and combinations thereof.
- 7. The bit according to claim 1 wherein at least one said diamond-impregnated insert includes thermally stable polycrystalline diamond material.
- 8. The bit according to claim 7 wherein said diamond-impregnated insert comprises diamond material in a matrix and the diamond material comprises less than about 35% volume of the total volume of at least one said diamond-impregnated insert.
- 9. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are included in said bit body when said bit body is molded.
- 10. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are added to said bit body after said bit body is molded.
- 11. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are configured such that the area of the portion of the surface of said support members that is in contact with the formation during drilling remains substantially constant during drilling.
- 12. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members are tapered.
- 13. The bit according to claim 1 wherein at least two adjacent support members are conjoined along at least a portion of their height.
- 14. The bit according to claim 1 wherein said support members define an aggregate volume VTotal that is less than two times the aggregate volume of the inserts supported in said support members
- 15. The bit according to claim 1 wherein each diamond-impregnated insert is affixed to the support members by brazing.
- 16. The bit according to claim 1 wherein the ratio of the wear ratio of the support members to the wear ratio of the inserts is less than 1:1.
- 17. The bit according to claim 1 wherein the ratio of the wear ratio of the support members to the wear ratio of the inserts is less than 1:5.
- 18. The bit according to claim 1 wherein the ratio of the wear ratio of the support members to the wear ratio of the inserts is less than 1:10.
- 19. The bit according to claim 1 wherein at least a portion of a support member surrounds a portion of each insert, and wherein the ratio of the length of the portion of said insert surrounded by said support members (E2) to the total length of said insert (E3) is less than 2:3 when the bit is new.
- 20. The bit according to claim 1 wherein the ratio of the length of the portion said insert that extends above support member (E1) to the diameter of said insert (d) is less than approximately 3:1
- 21. A method for forming a bit having a diamond-impregnated cutting structure, comprising:
(a) forming a plurality of diamond-impregnated inserts; (b) forming a bit body that includes a plurality of substantially diamond free support members, said support members including a plurality of sockets sized to receive the inserts; (c) mounting the inserts in the support members and affixing the inserts to the bit body.
- 22. The bit according to claim 21 wherein step (b) includes forming the bit body as a tungsten carbide matrix.
- 23. The bit according to claim 21 wherein step (c) includes affixing each diamond-impregnated insert to the bit body by brazing.
