Claims
- 1. A drilling fluid system having effective rheology and lubricity properties comprising a suspension of graphite particles having a particle size distribution sufficient to permit greater than 65 wt. % of the graphite particles to pass through a shaker screen having a mesh size of about 80 or less.
- 2. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein 80 wt. % or more of the graphite particles pass through the shaker screen.
- 3. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein the quantity of graphite particles having a particle size of 60 mesh or less is 82 wt. % or more.
- 4. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein the quantity of graphite particles having a particle size of 60 mesh or less is 90 wt. % or more.
- 5. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein the quantity of graphite particles having a particle size of less than 60 mesh is 82 wt. % or more.
- 6. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein the quantity of graphite particles having a particle size of less than 60 mesh is 90 wt. % or more.
- 7. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein 25 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 8. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 9. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein about 82 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 60 mesh or less and about 25 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 10. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein about 82 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 60 mesh or less and about 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 11. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 comprising about 90 wt. % or more graphite particles having a particle size of 60 mesh or less and 50 wt. % or more graphite particles having a particle size of 120 mesh or less
- 12. The drilling fluid system of claim 11 wherein said graphite has an average particle size of less than 60 mesh
- 13. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 comprising from about 4 lb/bbl to about 10 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 14. The drilling fluid system of claim 9 comprising from about 4 lb/bbl to about 10 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 15. The drilling fluid system of claim 10 comprising from about 4 lb/bbl to about 10 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 16. The drilling fluid system of claim 11 comprising from about 4 lb/bbl to about 10 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 17. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 comprising from about 5 lb/bbl to about 8 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 18. The drilling fluid system of claim 9 comprising from about 5 lb/bbl to about 8 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 19. The drilling fluid system of claim 10 comprising from about 5 lb/bbl to about 8 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 20. The drilling fluid system of claim 11 comprising from about 5 lb/bbl to about 8 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 21. The drilling fluid system of claim 1 wherein said drilling fluid system is selected from the group consisting of a water-based drilling fluid systems and oil-based drilling fluid systems.
- 22. A graphite particle mixture for use in a drilling fluid system comprising 82 wt. % or more graphite particles having a particle size of 60 mesh or less.
- 23. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein 90 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 60 mesh or less.
- 24. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein 82 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of less than 60 mesh.
- 25. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein 25 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 26. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 27. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein about 90 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 60 mesh or less and 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less
- 28. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein about 82 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of less than 60 mesh and about 35 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 29. The graphite particle mixture of claim 22 wherein about 90 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of less than 60 mesh and 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 30. A spotting fluid having effective rheology comprising graphite particles having an average particle size of 120 mesh or greater.
- 31. The spotting fluid of claim 30 comprising graphite particles having an average particle size of greater than 120 mesh.
- 32. The spotting fluid of claim 30 comprising graphite particles having an average particle size of about 20 mesh or smaller.
- 33. The spotting fluid of claim 30 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 40 mesh or smaller.
- 34. The spotting fluid of claim 30 comprising from about 10 lb/bbl to about 50 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 35. The spotting fluid of claim 31 comprising from about 10 lb/bbl to about 50 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 36. The spotting fluid of claim 32 comprising from about 10 lb/bbl to about 50 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 37. The spotting fluid of claim 33 comprising from about 10 lb/bbl to about 50 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 38. The spotting fluid of claim 30 comprising from about 20 lb/bbl to about 40 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 39. The spotting fluid of claim 31 comprising from about 20 lb/bbl to about 40 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 40. The spotting fluid of claim 32 comprising from about 20 lb/bbl to about 40 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 41. The spotting fluid of claim 33 comprising from about 20 lb/bbl to about 40 lb/bbl of the graphite particles.
- 42. The spotting fluid of claim 30 wherein said drilling fluid system is selected from the group consisting of water-based drilling fluid systems and oil-based drilling fluid systems.
- 43. The spotting fluid of claim 30 comprising an oil-based fluid.
- 44. A graphite particle mixture for use in a spotting fluid comprising graphite particles having an average particle size of 120 mesh or greater.
- 45. The graphite particle mixture of claim 44 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of greater than 120 mesh.
- 46. The graphite particle mixture of claim 44 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 20 mesh or smaller.
- 47. The graphite particle mixture of claim 44 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 40 mesh or smaller.
- 48. The graphite particle mixture of claim 45 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 40 mesh or smaller.
- 49. A method for reducing the amount of graphite added to a drilling fluid system during drilling operations in order to reduce torque and drag, the method comprising using a drilling fluid system comprising a graphite mixture comprising a suspension of graphite particles having a particle size distribution effective to permit greater than 65 wt. % of the graphite particles to pass through a shaker screen having a mesh size of about 80 or less.
- 50. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein from greater than 65 wt. % to about 80 wt. % or more of the graphite particles pass through the shaker screen.
- 51. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 80 wt. % or more of the graphite particles pass through the shaker screen.
- 52. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 82 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 60 mesh or less.
- 53. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 90 wt. % or more of the graphite particles having a particle size of 60 mesh or less.
- 54. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 82 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of less than 60 mesh.
- 55. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 90 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of less than 60 mesh.
- 56. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 35 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 57. The method of claims 51 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 35 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 58. The method of claim 49 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 59. The method of claim 51 further comprising providing said graphite mixture, wherein 50 wt. % or more of the graphite particles have a particle size of 120 mesh or less.
- 60. A method for increasing lubricity of a spotting fluid comprising using as a lubricity agent a graphite mixture comprising graphite particles having an average particle size of 120 mesh or greater.
- 61. The method of claim 60 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size greater than 120 mesh.
- 62. The method of claim 60 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 20 mesh or smaller.
- 63. The method of claim 61 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 20 mesh or smaller.
- 64. The method of claim 60 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 40 mesh or smaller.
- 65. The method of claim 61 wherein the graphite particles have an average particle size of about 40 mesh or smaller.
