Claims
- 1. A method for carrying a towed vehicle on a trailer having a main frame and including a coupler, for coupling the trailer to a towing vehicle, and at least one trailer wheel, comprising the steps of:
driving the towed vehicle along the ground and into the main frame of the trailer by means of driving feet; securing to the trailer the towed vehicle that is inside the trailer's main frame; driving the secured, towed vehicle along the ground, thereby driving the trailer; raising the towed vehicle relative to the main frame of the trailer to a raised position in which at least one of the driving feet of the towed vehicle is out of contact with the ground; hitching a towing vehicle to the trailer coupler; and using the towing vehicle to tow the trailer and towed vehicle in the raised position.
- 2. A method for carrying a towed vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the trailer includes a movable frame that is supported on the main frame, and the towed vehicle is supported on the movable frame.
- 3. A method for carrying a towed vehicle as recited in claim 2, wherein the movable frame defines at least one opening through which the driving feet project for towing the trailer.
- 4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of raising the vehicle relative to the main frame of the trailer is accomplished by a lifting mechanism on the trailer.
- 5. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the towed vehicle includes its own lifting mechanism, which is used for lifting the secured, towed vehicle relative to the trailer.
- 6. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the movable frame includes lift points that contact the vehicle.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein said movable frame includes means for easily changing the relative positions of said lift points to accommodate different vehicles.
- 8. A method as recited in claim 5, wherein said towed vehicle has movable arms, and wherein said arms lift the towed vehicle relative to the trailer.
- 9. A method as recited in claim 5, wherein said towed vehicle includes a winch, which lifts the towed vehicle relative to the trailer.
- 10. A trailer and towed vehicle combination, comprising:
a towed vehicle, including a vehicle frame and a plurality of driving feet for propelling the vehicle along the ground; a main trailer frame; a towing tongue supported by said main trailer frame for connecting the main trailer frame to a towing vehicle; at least one trailer wheel mounted on said main trailer frame for supporting and carrying the main trailer frame along the ground; a carrier supported on said main trailer frame; and means for moving said vehicle up and down relative to said main trailer frame from a lowered position to a raised position, wherein said carrier includes lifting points which, in the raised position, support the vehicle off of the ground, and wherein, in the lowered position, at least one of the driving feet contact the ground when the vehicle is inside the trailer; and a connector which secures the towed vehicle to one of said main trailer frame and said carrier while the vehicle is inside the trailer and the carrier is in the lowered position, so that the towed vehicle can drive the trailer along the ground.
- 11. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein the lifting points contact the driving feet for lifting the towed vehicle.
- 12. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 11, wherein the driving feet are tires, each having a diameter, and said lifting points are movable up and down relative to the main trailer frame and define openings which have a length that is less than the diameter of their respective tires.
- 13. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said lifting points define openings through which said driving feet project to drive the trailer, and including means for adjusting the relative positions of the lifting points.
- 14. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said lifting points contact the vehicle frame to lift the vehicle.
- 15. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, and further comprising a jack mounted on said main frame and said carrier for raising and lowering the carrier relative to the main frame.
- 16. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said carrier includes a movable arm mounted on the vehicle.
- 17. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said carrier includes a frame which contacts the driving feet of the vehicle to lift the vehicle.
- 18. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said carrier includes a plurality of hooks which fasten to the vehicle.
- 19. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said carrier includes a platform.
- 20. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said main frame comprises wheel hubs, and said carrier includes a frame movably mounted on said wheel hubs.
- 21. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said carrier includes projections, and said vehicle includes receivers which receive said projections.
- 22. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said driving feet include wheels having hubs, and said carrier includes projections received by the hubs and movably mounted on the main trailer frame.
- 23. A trailer assembly for carrying a towed vehicle having driving feet, comprising:
a main trailer frame; wheels mounted on said main trailer frame and supporting said main trailer frame; a towing tongue supported by said main trailer frame; a vehicle carrier supported on said main trailer frame and defining at least one opening to permit the driving feet of the vehicle to contact the ground and drive the vehicle when the carrier is in a lowered position; a lift for raising and lowering said vehicle carrier relative to said main trailer frame so as to raise and lower the vehicle in the trailer; and a mounting bracket including first and second parts, said first part mounted on one of said main trailer frame and said vehicle carrier, and the second part including means for mounting to the towed vehicle, wherein said first and second parts latch together to permit the towed vehicle to drive the main trailer frame when the towed vehicle is in the trailer and the carrier is lowered, and said first and second parts permit vertical movement of the second part relative to the first part so the towed vehicle can be moved up and down relative to the main trailer frame while remaining mounted to the trailer by the mounting bracket.
- 24. A trailer assembly as recited in claim 23, wherein the first part of said mounting bracket includes a substantially vertically-extending portion.
- 25. A trailer assembly as recited in claim 24, wherein the second part of said mounting bracket includes a yoke.
- 26. A trailer assembly as recited in claim 23, wherein said vehicle carrier includes a movable frame; and further comprising a track which guides said movable frame as it moves up and down relative to the main frame.
- 27. A trailer assembly as recited in claim 23, wherein said vehicle carrier includes a plurality of lift surfaces.
- 28. A trailer assembly as recited in claim 23, wherein said first part of said mounting bracket includes a substantially vertical track and a receptacle for movement along said track, and said second part of said mounting bracket includes a projection received by said receptacle.
- 29. A trailer for carrying a vehicle having driving feet, comprising:
a main frame; wheels supporting said main frame; a tongue for hitching the trailer to a towing vehicle; means for securing a vehicle to said main frame when the vehicle is inside said main frame; means for raising and lowering the elevation of a secured vehicle relative to said main frame, said means for raising and lowering including lift points for contacting and lifting the vehicle, said lift points defining at least one opening to permit the vehicle's driving feet to contact the ground when in the lowered position; and means for adjusting the relative positions of said lift points in order to accommodate various vehicles.
- 30. A trailer and vehicle combination, comprising:
a main trailer frame defining an opening; wheels supporting said main trailer frame; a receptacle supported on said main trailer frame; a vehicle, including driving feet and at least one movable arm, wherein said receptacle receives said movable arm so that raising and lowering said movable arm lowers and raises the vehicle relative to the main trailer frame; wherein, when said vehicle is lowered, said driving feet extend through said opening to the ground.
- 31. A trailer and vehicle combination as recited in claim 30, wherein said receptacle includes a platform and a lip, and said arm includes an implement received between said platform and said lip.
- 32. A trailer and vehicle combination as recited in claim 30, wherein said receptacle includes a slot, and said arm includes a projection received in said slot.
- 33. A trailer and vehicle combination as recited in claim 30, wherein said arm includes a mounting mechanism for mounting an implement to the arm, and wherein said receptacle includes complementary structure which mates to said mounting mechanism.
- 34. A trailer and vehicle combination as recited in claim 30, and further comprising hubs on said driving feet and projections from said main trailer frame which are received by said hubs.
- 35. A trailer, comprising:
a main frame; a plurality of wheels supporting said main frame; forward and rear ramps mounted on said main frame and defining an opening between said forward and rear ramps large enough to permit the front wheels of a vehicle to reach the ground through said opening; and means for securing a vehicle to said main frame to permit the vehicle to drive the main frame when its wheels are extending to the ground through said opening.
- 36. A trailer as recited in claim 35, wherein said ramps pivot about parallel left-to-right horizontal axes relative to said main frame.
- 37. A trailer as recited in claim 35, wherein at least some of said ramps are fixed relative to said main frame.
- 38. A trailer as recited in claim 35, wherein all of said ramps are fixed relative to said main frame.
- 39. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of raising the towed vehicle includes using ramps.
- 40. A method as recited in claim 39, wherein said ramps pivot relative to the main frame.
- 41. A method as recited in claim 39, wherein the ramps cooperate with projections from the vehicle hubs.
- 42. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 10, wherein said means for moving said carrier up and down includes ramps.
- 43. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 42, wherein at least one of said ramps is pivotably mounted on the main trailer frame.
- 44. A trailer and towed vehicle combination as recited in claim 42, wherein said means for moving the carrier up and down includes cooperating means on said ramps and on the hubs of said vehicle, and wherein the ends of said ramps lie at approximately the height of the hubs of the vehicle.
