Claims
- 1. A drive assembly for a bilaterally symmetrical machine, comprising:
(a) a power source; (b) a power splitter connected with said power source; and (c) a pair of opposed drive mechanisms connected with said power splitter box, each drive mechanism including:
(1) a first differential clutch connected with said power splitter; (2) a drive element connected with said first differential clutch; (3) a first braking device connected with said first differential clutch to control the delivery of power from said power splitter to said drive element, whereby the delivery of power to said drive elements can be independently controlled to control movement of the machine.
- 2. A drive assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein each drive mechanism further includes a first drive shaft connecting said power splitter with said first differential clutch, said first drive shaft being driven in a first direction.
- 3. A drive assembly as defined in claim 2, and further comprising a controller connected with said first braking devices of each of said drive mechanisms to independently control the application of braking force to said first differential clutches, respectively.
- 4. A drive assembly as defined in claim 3, wherein each drive mechanism further includes a second differential clutch, a second drive shaft, and a second braking device, said first and second drive shafts being driven in opposite directions and being arranged between said first and second differential clutches, whereby operation of said first and second braking mechanisms controls the degree and direction of driving power being delivered from said power source to said driving elements.
- 5. A drive assembly as defined in claim 4, wherein said controller is connected with said second braking devices.
- 6. A drive assembly as defined in claim 5, wherein said driving element comprises one of a wheel, a track, a propeller, and an impeller.
- 7. A drive assembly as defined in claim 5, wherein said braking device comprises one of a disk and drum friction brake, a motor, and a pump.
