Claims
- 1. A screwdriver assembly to drive a threaded fastener carrying a washer thereon spaced axially from a head of the fastener towards a tip of the fastener;
- the screwdriver assembly comprising:
- an elongate rotatable driver shaft having at a forward end a bit member, the driver shaft reciprocally movable axially along an axis to engage a fastener with the bit member and drive the fastener axially forwardly into a workpiece;
- a washer abutment surface disposed about the axis to engage a washer carried on the fastener to assist in locating the fastener coaxially relative the axis;
- a fastener and washer feed slotway extending generally radially relative the axis on a first side thereof permitting a fastener together with a washer carried on the fastener to be advanced through the slotway radially relative the axis into a position with both the fastener and the washer coaxial with the axis;
- the feed slotway having a first slotway portion sized to permit the fastener to pass therethrough radially relative the axis and a second slotway portion sized to permit the washer carried on the fastener to pass therethrough radially relative the axis,
- the washer abutment surface having a rear segment,
- the rear segment of the washer abutment surface and the second slotway portion located radially opposite from each other relative the axis and at the same location axially along the axis whereby the rear segment of the washer abutment surface is disposed to engage and stop a washer from further radial movement on the washer being advanced radially through the second slotway portion.
- 2. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 1 including rearward of the washer abutment surface a fastener abutment surface about the axis to engage the head of a fastener and assist in locating the fastener screw coaxially relative the axis.
- 3. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 2 including a holding strip exitway opening generally radially away from the axis on a side thereof opposite the entranceway for exit of portions of a holding strip to hold fasteners collated together spaced from each other and from which fasteners have been driven.
- 4. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the washer abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the axis.
- 5. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the washer abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the axis, and
- the fastener abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the axis.
- 6. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the washer abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the axis with a diameter marginally greater than a diameter of washers the assembly is adapted to receive.
- 7. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the washer abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the axis with a diameter marginally greater than a diameter of washers the assembly is adapted to receive, and
- the fastener abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the axis with a diameter marginally greater than a diameter of heads of fasteners the assembly is adapted to receive.
- 8. An assembly as claimed in claim 1 including means to urge the fastener radially relative the axis and hold the washer in engagement with the washer engagement surface.
- 9. An assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the washer engagement surface and fastener engagement surface are on the same side of said axis.
- 10. An assembly as claimed in claim 9 including means to urge the fastener radially relative the axis and hold the washer in engagement with the washer engagement surface and the fastener head in engagement with the fastener engagement surface.
- 11. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 3 further including screw fastener feed means to successively, incrementally advance fasteners collated in a strip through the slotway.
- 12. An assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the washer abutment surface has a profile mating the profile of the washer.
- 13. An assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the washer abutment surface has a profile mating a profile of the washer and the fastener abutment surface has a profile mating a profile of the head of the fastener.
- 14. An assembly as claimed in claim 1 including
- a housing;
- the drive shaft and housing relatively coupled for rotation of the drive shaft about the axis relative the housing but against axial movement of the drive shaft relative the housing;
- a slide body coupled to the housing for displacement parallel to the axis between an extended position and a retracted position;
- a spring biasing the slide body forwardly relative the housing to the extended position;
- the slide body having a guideway extending axially therethrough between a rear axially open end and a forward axially open end and through which the drive shaft is axially reciprocally slidable on displacement of the slide body between the extended position and the retracted position;
- radially inwardly directed surfaces of the guideway comprising the washer abutment surface adapted to locate a threaded fastener carrying a washer axially aligned with the drive shaft for driving by the drive shaft axially forwardly out of the forward axially open end of the guideway.
- 15. An assembly as claimed in claim 2 including
- a housing;
- the drive shaft and housing relatively coupled for rotation of the drive shaft about the axis relative the housing but against axial movement of the drive shaft relative the housing;
- a slide body coupled to the housing for displacement parallel to the axis between an extended position and a retracted position;
- a spring biasing the slide body forwardly relative the housing to the extended position;
- the slide body having a guideway extending axially therethrough between a rear axially open end and a forward axially open end and through which the drive shaft is axially reciprocally slidable on displacement of the slide body between the extended position and the retracted position;
- radially inwardly directed surfaces of the guideway comprising the washer abutment surface and the fastener abutment surface adapted to locate a threaded fastener carrying a washer axially aligned with the drive shaft for driving by the drive shaft axially forwardly out of the forward axially open end of the guideway.
- 16. An assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the washer abutment surface further comprises a forward segment forward of the rear segment to assist in locating the washer coaxially relative the axis on the washer being driven with the fastener forwardly by the bit member,
- the forward segment of the washer abutment surface extends circumferentially about the axis a greater extent than the rear segment.
- 17. An assembly as claimed in claim 16 wherein the abutment surface includes a camming segment disposed between the rear segment and the forward segment to assist in guiding a washer disposed within the rear segment of the abutment surface to enter the forward segment on the washer being driven with the fastener forwardly by the bit member from the rear segment.
- 18. An assembly as claimed in claim 16 wherein the forward segment of the washer abutment surface extends 360.degree. about the axis, encircling a washer received therein.
- 19. An assembly as claimed in claim 16 wherein the rear segment of the washer abutment surface extends not more than 180.degree. about the axis.
- 20. An assembly as claimed in claim 19 wherein the forward segment of the washer abutment surface extends 360.degree. about the axis, encircling a washer received therein.
- 21. An assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the washer abutment surface further comprises a forward segment forward of the rear segment to assist in locating the washer coaxially relative the axis on the washer being driven with the fastener forwardly by the bit member,
- the forward segment of the washer abutment surface extends circumferentially about the axis a greater extent than the rear segment.
- 22. An assembly as claimed in claim 21 wherein the abutment surface includes a camming segment disposed in between the rear segment and the forward segment to assist in guiding a washer disposed within the entry-stop segment of the abutment surface to enter the forward segment on the washer being driven with the fastener forwardly by the bit member from the rear segment.
- 23. A screwdriver assembly to drive screws collated together in a holding strip which engages a shank of each screw and holds the screws spaced from each other with each screw carrying a washer between the strip and a tip of the screw, the screwdriver comprising:
- a cylindrical guideway to receive a screw coaxially therein with a washer carried on the screw,
- a screw-and-strip entranceway opening generally radially into the guideway on a first side thereof,
- a strip exitway opening generally radially out of the guideway on a second side thereof opposite the entranceway,
- the guideway, the entranceway and the exitway juxtapositioned to permit screws collated in a strip spaced in relation from each other and washers carried on the screws to be successively advanced through the entranceway radially into the guideway to locate each successive screw carrying its washer coaxially within the guideway with portions of the strip from which screws have been driven extending from the guideway via the exitway,
- an elongate, rotatable driver shaft having at a forward end a bit, the shaft reciprocally movable axially in the guideway to engage the screw with the bit and drive the screw axially forwardly from the guideway into a workpiece;
- a washer abutment surface disposed about a forward portion of the guideway to engage the washer to assist in axially locating the screw coaxially within the guideway;
- the entranceway having a first entranceway portion sized to permit the screw to pass therethrough radially relative the axis into the guideway and a second entranceway portion sized to permit the washer carried on the screw to pass therethrough radially relative the axis into the guideway,
- the washer abutment surface having a rear segment,
- the rear segment of the washer abutment surface and the second entranceway portion located radially opposite from each other relative the axis and at the same location axially along the axis whereby the rear segment of the washer abutment surface is disposed to engage and stop a washer from further radial movement on the washer being advanced radially through the second entranceway portion.
- 24. An assembly as claimed in claim 23 including a screw head abutment surface about a rear portion of the guideway rearward of the forward portion to engage a head of the screw to assist in locating the screw coaxially within the guideway.
- 25. As assembly as claimed in claim 23 wherein the washer abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the guideway with a diameter marginally greater than a diameter of washes the assembly is adapted to drive.
- 26. An assembly as claimed in claim 24 wherein the washer abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the guideway with a diameter marginally greater than a diameter of washers the assembly is adapted to drive, and
- the screw abutment surface is part cylindrical and disposed coaxially relative the guideway with a diameter marginally grater than a diameter of the head of screws the assembly is adapted to drive.
- 27. An assembly as claimed in claim 26 wherein the diameter of the washer abutment surface is greater than the diameter of the screw abutment surface.
- 28. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 23 further including screw guide means to guide screws collated in a strip into the entranceway.
- 29. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 28 further including screw feed means to successively, incrementally advance screws collated in a strip through the entranceway into the guide means.
- 30. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 23 wherein the washer abutment surface further comprises a forward segment forward of the rear segment to assist in locating the washer coaxially relative the axis on the washer being driven with the fastener forwardly by the bit,
- the forward segment extending circumferentially about the axis a greater extent than the rear segment.
- 31. A screwdriver assembly as claimed in claim 24 wherein the washer abutment surface further comprises a forward segment forward of the rear segment to assist in locating the washer coaxially relative the axis on the washer being driven with the fastener forwardly by the bit,
- the forward segment extending circumferentially about the axis a greater extent than the rear segment.
