Claims
- 1. Apparatus for improving the driving behavior of an automotive vehicle tending to oversteering or understeering, the vehicle having a plurality of wheels, each wheel having a brake, said apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of sensors for generating signals representing a steering angle, a velocity, a lateral acceleration and a measured yaw rate of the vehicle;
- coefficient of friction recognition means, responsive to the velocity, the lateral acceleration, the measured yaw rate and the steering angle, for determining an instantaneous coefficient of friction that is less than or equal to a maximum coefficient of friction;
- vehicle model means responsive to the steering angle, the velocity and the coefficient of friction for determining a yaw rate limit and a desired yaw rate that is less than or equal to a yaw rate limit;
- comparing means for comparing the measured yaw rate and the desired yaw rate to determine a difference therebetween;
- yawing moment control means responsive to the difference for determining a moment that is applied to the vehicle, so that the measured yaw rate is adjusted towards the desired yaw rate; and
- means responsive to the yawing moment control means for determining pressure adjustments that are applied to each brake, individually, to generate the moment.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the vehicle model means include means for determining a lateral acceleration limit on which the yaw rate limit is based.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the vehicle model means include means responsive to the instantaneous coefficient of friction, the velocity and a longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle for determining a lateral acceleration limit on which the yaw rate limit is based, such that: ##EQU27## where .PSI..sub.Desiredmax is the yaw rate limit, a.sub.qulim is the lateral acceleration limit, and v is the velocity.
- 4. In a control circuit for controlling the driving stability of a vehicle, of the type in which a plurality of input variables, including a preset steering angle and a travel speed, are converted into a desired yaw rate value on the basis of a vehicle model that determines a plurality of travel properties of the vehicle, and said desired yaw rate value is compared with a measured actual yaw rate value in a comparison unit, wherein a yaw adjusting moment is calculated, and said yaw adjusting moment is used to set pressure variables, said pressure variables being used to control a plurality of wheel brakes of the vehicle so as to generate an additional yawing moment, which adjusts the measured yaw rate to the calculated yaw rate, the improvement comprising:
- coefficient of friction recognition means responsive to the input variables for determining an instantaneous coefficient of friction that is less than or equal to a maximum coefficient of friction, and for providing the instantaneous coefficient of friction to the vehicle model.
- said vehicle model being responsive to said instantaneous coefficient of friction for determining a maximum allowable desired yaw rate, to which the desired yaw rate is limited.
- 5. A control circuit in accordance with claim 4, wherein:
- the coefficient of friction recognition means determines the current value of the maximum coefficient of friction;
- said vehicle model is a stationary circular travel model which determines a limit value of the lateral acceleration of the vehicle, and the maximum allowable desired yaw rate is determined from said limit value of the lateral acceleration, taking into account the speed of travel.
- 6. A control circuit in accordance with claim 5, wherein the calculation of the lateral acceleration is based on the instantaneous coefficient of friction, the speed and a longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle.
- 7. Apparatus for improving the driving behavior of an automotive vehicle tending to oversteering or understeering, the vehicle having a plurality of wheels, each wheel having a brake, said apparatus comprising:
- means for receiving signals from a plurality of sensors, said signals representing a steering angle, a velocity, a lateral acceleration and a measured yaw rate of the vehicle;
- coefficient of friction recognition means responsive to the velocity and the steering angle for determining an instantaneous coefficient of friction that is less than or equal to a maximum coefficient of friction;
- vehicle model means responsive to the steering angle, the velocity and the coefficient of friction for determining a yaw rate limit and a desired yaw rate that is less than or equal to a yaw rate limit;
- comparing means for comparing the measured yaw rate and the desired yaw rate to determine a difference therebetween;
- yawing moment control means responsive to the difference for determining a moment that is applied to the vehicle, so that the measured yaw rate is adjusted towards the desired yaw rate; and
- means responsive to the yawing moment control means for determining pressure adjustments that are applied to each brake, individually, to generate the moment.
